It looks like the weather is finally starting to cooperate. They are not allowing any practice on Merkel. It should be in great shape in May.

Hey GQ. Good luck in your recruiting efforts. Can't wait to see the team play in Spokane at the Qualifier on May 14th and 15th.

Thanks Lefty. I got a great little hotel onboard today. It's a small boutique hotel right in downtown Spokane. www.hotelrubyspokane.com. Most of the rooms are a single queen bed at $60 per night. A suite can be had for about $15 more. These should go fast. Just call and ask for the senior softball rate. I will have info on 2 other hotels in a day or so. We are planning some fun events at this tourney.

Do any of you have recommendations for website programs to use for our league? Hopefully free or almost free programs.

This is from the 2005 Senior Softball Summit meeting:

Recommend: that the 1-1 count with a courtesy foul be used by all organizations.

Summit Response: Most organizations do not use the 1-1 count because of widespread complaints from players. Tests have shown that it only saves 2 or 3 minutes per game.

Dirty, you are absolutely right but I think you will agree that for most umpires, especially in rec leagues, this is a tough call to make given the condition of the box, lack of lines, lack of umpiring experience, etc. I rarely see the call made at all.

Just my opinion but I feel that the only time a batter should be called out for a batters box violation while swinging is when the batter steps on the plate (or mat), steps directly in front of the plate, or runs out of the box if running up to hit a pitch.

There are 10 of them up for auction on ebay right now. It's still my favorite ASA bat.

Hi Pogo. We have a fairly decent league here in Spokane. We have 10 50+ league teams and sholud have 6 to 8 60+ league teams. The downside is that it is ASA. I play in both leagues. We are looking to put together a 60's team next season to compete in some of the SSUSA tournaments. I will shoot you an e-mail with my contact info.

Discussion: NORTHWEST CHAMPIONSHIPS 2008 - Draft Schedules

Jawood, you're right but back in the day, most tourneys were double elim. Now they are all 5 game guarantee coupled with the fact that most senior players prefer not to play at night. I do agree that in todays economy, it does add an additional financial burden when the tournaments are stretched out over 3 or 4 days. The tradeoff would be night games and the possibility of cramming 5 to 7 or 8 games into a 2 day period. I don't know about you but a lot of the older guys would not hold up physically under those conditions. See you in Portland.

Jawood, this is a 33 team tournament. All 33 teams play on Friday. Do you think your 50+ Major division deserves special treatment? There are plenty of us that play in the 60's that still work and have to take time off. I don't get your beef?

Discussion: What to wear for shoes at Golden Eagle/Reno

Hi Einstein. Some of the info that I gathered did appear to relate to the older turf. I think the sliding and turf toe parts still apply. Yes, I do know the Northwest boys and have played with and against many of them for years. I will be at Golden Eagle on Sat and will look you up and properly introduce myself. What team are you playing with?
