| March 10, 2008 E. Ness | Topic: Bats Discussion: Ultra 2 I believe the Legacy is the only one with a one year warranty. The Legacy is as hot as the other two and you get a replacement. The advanced has the funky knob and you can find that bat for less than $150. The Ultra 2 does not seem to last very long before it breaks. The Advanced is about the same. So far the Legacy has done very well but my buddy is putting it up and only using it for tournament games from this point on. It has about 200 swing on it. |

| Feb. 25, 2008 E. Ness | Topic: Bats Discussion: New ASA bat standard Fred believe what you want but come July 1 you will see. Remember ASA also told all of us that the grandfather rule was forever. I would suggest since you do not want to believe me you try calling any of the bat companies. Combat is a good place to start. Talk to anyone in costumer service. Ask them why they can no longer make their Anti-Viruse ASA bat like they did last year. Combat did not want to change the Anti-Virus but now they must. I wonder why? The number for Combat is easy 1866combats. |

Ness | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Super Mjor Softball-The way the game was meant to be played Jim I have access to a baseball complex that I am sure we could use if we give enough notice. Grass infields, lights, 300+ fields, etc. Only problem with the fields is that it is out on it own but not to far from the city and hotels. So yes KC could be a place. I agree with Joe. Lets put the thing together with the idea that we may have a few adjustments. SSUSA rules with our changes. Get a date or two and a complex and then let the senior softball world know and go from there. The first year might be short on teams but if we do it right it will not be from that point on. Lets get some equipment companies behind this. We all have ins with many companies lets make this a world tournament like the old days. I have an in with Combat, Kevin I am sure will get involved as will Corky with Miken. We can do this we just need to start rocking and rolling. |

I played for you when we played Dan Smith and I know that you, Greg, myself and the whole team felt a great sense of accomplishment when we beat Smith and those other power house teams. The percentage fell in their favor more often than not but those giant killer days were great. It is what makes the highest level of softball so great. The best of the best playing against each other. I would also agree that the SPA rule is very good but even that has limitations which I am experiencing at the current moment. Jim, Anything I can do to help just let me know. I am back in-country now so I do have time to help. I may not find a team to play for but I could help organize and help run the tournament. |
| Feb. 25, 2008 E. Ness | Topic: Bats Discussion: New ASA bat standard Fred you are still missing the point. Last years test allowed for the bat to break in beyond 98 mph this year test does not. Because it does not and the bat companies are worried about the idea of a ban they are bring the starting point down so the bats do not EXCEED 98 mph. Which means per these bat companies Combat, Miken, Worth they do not want their bats to exceed 96 mph. The type of testing you mentioned is how we do it. No one knows which one of the black bats is the old 98 mph bats until we hit them. After that it does not take long to figure it out. Try this how many on here really love the Vel 2 as their bat of choice (no shaved one allowed)? Now think of a bat a little worst than that. You might as well get a good single wall bat and not spend $300 on the new ASA composites or be smart and keep the ones you have in good shape. The bat companies make money everytime ASA does this but the companies I talked to and work with were real happy with what they had for ASA bats and were not real happy about the new standard they have to use. Now if you still believe there is no new standard then what you are saying is all the bat companies shut down production of bats that were selling to make lesser bats on their own with no direction from ASA. If that is what you believe then nothing I will say can change that. But I can tell it cost Combat an arm and a leg to retool their new Anti-Virus 94. Joe I am with you. I like all the ideas so far and hope we can get this new division going. |

Ness | Topic: Bats Discussion: New ASA bat standard Fred if there is no 94 mph bat standard then how do you explain that starting July 1 of 2008 all ASA bats must not exceed 98 mph? The 2007 test allowed all ASA bats to start at 98 mph and then after they broke in they were allowed to be a + or - of 2 mph which means the broke in Freak 98 could test to be 100 mph and still be legal. After July 1 the bats cannot exceed 98 mph if they do the bat company could see a whole bat line banned thus the reason why bat companies are going with the 92 to 94 mph per ASA. This way the bats will have no chance in hell of going above 96-98. I tested these bats with the new balls and both the bats and the balls suck. We tested in 60, 70, 80, and 90 degree weather. All I can tell you is you better hope you play in 60 to 70 degree weather. Now the old 98 mph bats did hit the new balls better but as Joe said this new ball is the problem. Combine it with the new bats and it is not good. I would also add these new balls go soft rather quickly. Thank God ASA has died around my area. I love playing the game but if we are going back to wood bats or even single walls then we need to go back to good balls. The latter of which will never happen in ASA. |

Ness | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Super Mjor Softball-The way the game was meant to be played Jim, It is the weekend and you may only get a few to answer but as someone who has played at the highest level his whole life until I hit senior softball I am all for it as long as we get rid of the regional rules or at lesst split the country in half. Open homeruns, how about a 2 hour time limit, no run limit, 1 and 1 county, good 44/375 softballs, our bats, and maybe bigger fields if possibe. Make it a three day tournament if you can. It will take a year or two to get it going real good but I believe it will take off. Anyone who wants to play at that level wants as many teams as possible and wants the best to show up no matter what it takes. If that means a couple of super teams in the tournament then so be. I loved to play against Dan Smith back before the regional rules. The times we best his team were special. |

I tested one of the new 92 mph ASA bats with the new balls and all I can tell anyone is to keep their present 98 mph bats in good shape. We put 2000 swings on the bat and it never reached the Level of the old 98 mph bats that had less swings on them. |

Ness | Topic: Bats Discussion: New ASA bat standard I guess the fact that all the bat companies have stopped making the 98 mph bats now means that ASA has not changed the bat standards. I guess the fact that the new ASA standard states the bats cannot exceed 98 mph after break in means there are no new standards. If the ASA bat standards have not changed then why are all the bat companies now forced to make bats that start at 92 to 94 mph rather than 98 mph. Bottome line is this ASA has used smoke and mirrors in their approach which makes it seem as though nothing has changed but change has happened. If you do not believe this post then call and ask the bat companies. I have talked to three Combat, Miken, and Worth and all agree the new ASA bats are no going to be close to the old 98 mph. They cannot afford to have any bats exceed 98 mph under the new standard. Where as before a 98 mph could be 100 mph after it was broke in now it cannot. |

I will try to my best to help explain what Brett has a problem with. 1st your two world tournament wins are one more than his team which was forced to move up at the winter worlds. 2nd the number of top five finishes in quality tournaments that you have listed out numbers his team and yet he was forced to move up at the winter worlds. 3rd. When he requested if he could bring a 58 year old major plus player with his team to winter worlds he was informed by the SSUSA that if he brought this player he would have to play major, if he did not bring the player he would play AAA. I still have the e-mail stating that. So the major player and this team thought it would be better for him not to go since a number of players who played for the Barons when they won the ISA AAA worlds could not go. He believed that one player does not make a team as so often stated by the SSUSA. His team would be better suited for the AAA for this tournament. 4th, one week before the winter worlds he is informed his team would have to play major because of his ISA world tournament win and yet Double Play wins the Spring world and is not moved up. Add to that it is to late to bring the major plus player who is really just a DH who had not played but two tournaments in two years and you have what is preceived to be a set up. Now Brett has no problem with playing major next year and around the midwest next year starts Jan 1 2008 not in Nov. of 2007. In fact he has been told he will be moved up has Double Play been informed they will move up yet? Brett is trying to put together a team that can play and win at the Major level but that team was not available this past Nov and had he been told in Oct when he first asked this was going to happen then the Barons would not have made the trip without the major plus player. So you see he has a valid complaint. The Barons went 0/5 in this tournament at the Major level with a team that was not the same team that won the ISA worlds. So yeah he feels like he is not being treated equally. While his beef is probably with the SSUSA his complaints fell on deaf ears so he feels the only place one can be heard is here. I am sure he is not upset with the players or anyone associated with Double Play but he is upset with the fact your team had a better year than the Barons and his team was forced up after they were told it would not happen at the Winter Worlds. I would suggest if your team was in this position you would be upset as well. |

Question do the major plus players who are land locked by the SSUSA regional rules (which are not changing in the up coming and may be even worst with player ratings) fall under this idea of sandbagging if they are forced to play AAA? I agree that sandbagging is not right but some of it is brought on by the associations regional rule. Observation: You guys do realize that we all played with 1.20 bats in the past and it is the USSSA and the ASA that has brought the standards down? I read where people want to go back to the good old days of hard softballs and the old bats. Well those bats were 1.20 but the sweetspot was smaller. The senior bats are 1.20 but the sweetspot is larger and guess what that is what majority of players have asked for. All you have to do is check the number of teams that attend the USSSA, ASA, NSA, and ISSA worlds to those who attend the SSUSA, SPA, ISA, and LVSSA worlds. Numbers speak for themselves. Before someone makes the statement that I must be a U2 player I will answer that also. No but I do use the senior Combat as well as the new Gear Combat and the AV. The last two are not senior bats. Of course I don't get to play much because of the above mention regional problem. I plan on playing this year with a AAA team since that is all that we have around here. So I guess it really does not matter. |
| Dec. 4, 2007 E. Ness | Topic: Bats Discussion: Comosite bat ban for mid 2008 ? I like the Anti Virus from Combat. After it is broke in it is as hot or hotter than any of the other ASA bats and last a good long time. This bat comes in Endload, Extra Endload and a balance model. |

Scrappy6 is right on with what ASA is doing he just needed to add this (I got this from a certain composite only bat company). Most bat companies will not want the bat to exceed the 98 mph once broken in because if it does then it will be banned so the new models that they must start producing after June 1 2008 may never get above 96 mph once broken in. Now the ASA bats that are being produced now and until June 1 2008 will not be tested under the new standards and are suppose to be legal forever (forever with ASA can only mean a year or two). So if you play ASA it might behoove you to get a bat now and baby it because the replacement bats will be fall under the new standards. PS You may also see a price hike at the stores once we get closer to 06/01/2008. I know that the bat company I talked to said they are having a run on all existing ASA bats. |

Because I can tell you this he has not posted on this thread. I know he does not want his name drawn into to any of this. Now I agree with much of what you have said infact I say have a major plus conference. Jawood I disagree with your point on Stonemans number one point. You forget as do many in the associations about the land locked Major Plus players who have no place to play (excluding SPA and LVSSA). While there are not many there are a few and allowing teams to have one or two players at the Major Plus level from out of their region does not hurt anyone. As the head of this association says one players does not make a team so why are we so hell bent on locking major plus players who have no place to play other than regional AAA team out? |
| Sept. 7, 2007 E. Ness | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Knee Replacement I am bone on bone in both knees. I have been doing the shots now for 4 years and have both braces. My doctor says I need to have the knee replacements and he says once I have them I am doing playing ball.:( He also wants me to wait until I am 60 but I fear the time is drawing close. I can tell you this the shots are great for about 6 weeks and then they wear off. The braces help some but not enough so I guess it all depends on how much pain one can handle. We do have a couple of guys here in town with both knees replaced and they are playing ball but because of the way I swing the bat my doctor says NO! So as I am fast approaching that time I need to decide if I am done or not. |

I thought I was going to get to come to the LVSSA with the Mavericks but not now bro. I was hoping to see you and the LV boys. G19 you have no clue who you are talking to which is fine by me but your little snip about reading books is rather funny. So I will be stupid enough to enlighten you and I am sure you will have another quick come back because the only one right on this board in your opinion is you. First: I have a BA in History, Old English Lit and Spanish, an MA in History and Old English Lit. (that means I speak and read old and Middle English and I love to read books like Beowulf, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Genesis A and so forth). I have an EDS and a Ph.D in US Military History with post grad research work in the United States Civil War and the Vietnam War (I served two tours of duty in Vietnam). So I would say I have read a few books in my time. Second: I only have opinions on movies I have seen and when we did the "Remember Me" project four years ago not only did I work with a film crew filming the movie I was also the main historian on the film. I also did some taping at the History Channel studio. Lets see last book I authored? Well that would be in 2004 when my dissertation was published and I am in the process of getting two published for my job. Not much on bonds so I do not discuss them. As far as the MLB and Steroids go...I am more concerned about the buying and selling of said steroids rather than who is taking them but that falls under what I do for a living. Your fault is that you refuse to allow anyone else to have an opinion. You must for some reason cut on just about everything everyone says and all you bring to the discussion is what you have seen in one brief year of playing and the small amount of research you have done. Have you made some valid points? Yes! Have you really paid attention to what others were trying to discuss with you about said points? No! It seems to be your way or the highway and you want to continue to make these points by taking over threads. The sad thing is we have let you continue this practice by arguing with you. Which is our mistake. |
