May 2, 2025 LC7 | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: Carson City Hi Tim, While I appreciate you replying to my message, I have to say it's not very satisfying. You begin by posting that I don't want what I want, go on to tell me that SSUSA cares, and end by letting me know that your job is very difficult and you don't care enough to even consider my trivial request. I do want registrations to be moved back to prevent last minute logistics by our team. Our yearly tournament schedule is planned out before the season starts. Your argument about work, family, injury, etc. does not hold water. All of these things happen whenever the registration ends. If SSUSA allows roster modifications up to the current deadline, emergency roster changes could be made just like they are now. I didn't ask for SSUSA to make changes overnight. I simply asked for SSUSA to consider it. Will it cost teams more? Maybe we would be glad to pay. This is a discussion, not a demand. I didn't come to pick a fight and I hope this post conveys a respectful tone, because that's the spirit in which i'm writing it. The bottom line is moving registration back a month would help our team Immensely. We are not confused about that. Whether SSUSA cares or is able to address it is another issue. Can it be done, to help your customer have a better experience, or not? |
May 1, 2025 LC7 | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: Carson City Hi Dave Dowell, To follow up, I fully understand the process and the use of "tentative" in regards to the field assignments, but I'm asking about the feasibility of moving the registration deadline back a month. Is that something SSUSA will consider? |
April 29, 2025 LC7 | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: Carson City SSUSA, Is it problematic to move all tournament registration deadlines to a month earlier or more? At the very least, for tourneys with venues in dual cities? This would help teams tremendously. Every year I reserve lodging at both possible locations for several SSUSA events before they fill up, and I lose money from one of the non-refundable RV site deposits. Many players are not financially able to reserve multiple lodging and end up driving further than necessary to their games. We want to be able to opt out from undesirable venues, but airline tickets must be bought in advance of the announced location to get any kind of a good deal. We try to save cost so we purchase airfare as early as possible and don't want to spend extra for refundable tickets. The locations are posted so late because of the registration deadline that it's difficult to opt out. Our team enjoys rental housing to save money and stay together, but many of the large Airbnb rentals in Reno, Sacramento, Vegas, Phoenix, Denver, Orlando, etc., are taken before we know where we are playing. The tourneys in large cities prevent us from reserving a rental/hotel early because our venue might end up being located an hour drive away from the rental house or hotel we choose. Please consider moving the registration deadline back so we can know where we play earlier, make plans sooner, and save cost. |
April 17, 2025 LC7 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Ranking and Rosters Thanks for replying, DD. I thought each player was tracked for their age and rating. My understanding is that my AAA team can only have 2 or 3 Major players on the team. If that's true,SSUSA must rate them some way, at least. That information alone would be helpful to players and teams. I was told by several people that most of the players on a Major division team at LV Worlds a couple years ago were on a M+ team the previous year, but there was no way for a non-SSUSA person to check. Team rosters with player ratings would settle a lot of arguments. |
Feb. 26, 2025 LC7 | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: A wild suggestion for the 12 ft pitching height nickname36, why resort to ridicule and name calling? You're basically letting everyone know you have no logical argument. Did you bother to read the bullet points beneath "About this Message Board"? One prohibits: "Disparaging comments directed toward any individual". |
Feb. 20, 2025 LC7 | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: A wild suggestion for the 12 ft pitching height You're right, yankeesfan12. I wouldn't pitch cookies either. I guess my beef should only be with the umpire not calling those pitches illegal. Thank you for the perspective. At the end of the day i'm only in charge of me. |
Feb. 20, 2025 LC7 | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: A wild suggestion for the 12 ft pitching height SS11, I agree with most of your post. I've seen some umpires that are either apathetic about the pitching rule or not able to gauge height accurately. Any method to help umpires identify illegal pitches is a good thing for the game. We have foul lines to help them determine fair balls. I've umpired many games, and you are right that regardless of your call someone will be upset about it. It's a thankless job. I enforce the pitch height rule. It usually only takes 1 or 2 "illegal" calls to get the pitcher to stay in the legal range. I'm not dying on this hill and I don't want a robot umpire instead of a human, but if we can make it easier for them to get it right, shouldn't we? |
Feb. 20, 2025 LC7 | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: A wild suggestion for the 12 ft pitching height Hi yankeesfan12, No, i'm not asserting every illegal pitch is cheating. I've only played slowpitch for 40 years, so I don't have as much experience as many of you guys, but in my opinion it's a rare pitcher who doesn't throw a high pitch or a flat pitch after getting 2 strikes on a batter. I ask umpires to watch for that illegal pitch if they call no others. I don't like it when my own pitcher does it. As you point out, if an umpire refuses to call the illegal pitches, some batters will take matters into their own hands and go middle to hit the pitcher. That's not good for the game. I'd rather see the pitching height rule enforced so there is more offense in the game, less walks, and fewer foul-outs. Equal for both teams. This topic is not the most important issue in the game, but I believe it is worth discussing. Opinions vary, and i'm thankful for the discourse. |
Feb. 19, 2025 LC7 | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: A wild suggestion for the 12 ft pitching height mck71, good point about legal pitches being called illegal. That must be very frustrating for you. My point was about players who pitch over the legal limit on purpose, for an advantage. That's why I said "some" pitchers. I didn't mean to denigrate all pitchers who happen to throw a ball over 12', but I do call those that do it on purpose cheaters. I just want to play by the rules. |
Feb. 19, 2025 LC7 | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: A wild suggestion for the 12 ft pitching height nickname36, thanks for your opinion. I disagree. 12' pitching height is a rule. Many umpires do not enforce the pitching height rule, and some pitchers take advantage of this by cheating, hence the desire for better enforcement of the rule. To use your style of argument, perhaps along with ignoring illegal pitches we can also give batters 4 strikes when we want to. Maybe change the required outs in an inning to 2 when it benefits your team. It seems the only people complaining about enforcement of pitch height are pitchers and teams who need to cheat to be effective. Your ridicule of the OP is very disrespectful. How would you like if if I said spelling wow in all caps, with 5 W's and 4 exclamation points, is something 12 year old girls do? |
May 23, 2024 LC7 | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Back Foot in Front of the Mat It seems ridiculous that a batter in a SSUSA tournament may be called out for hitting the ball while both feet are in the batter's box, but here we are. I believe this small tweak could make the rule more playable: "A batter must either have both feet in the batter's box OR have their back foot behind the front of the mat when they hit the ball." This change would continue to prevent batters from getting closer to the pitcher while still allowing batters to use the entire legal batter's box. |

April 26, 2024 LC7 | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Batting Box rule change Left handed player called out correctly, entirely within the box I will be sending an email about modifying this rule, but how are these posts anonymous? SSUSA has the profile info for every user, and you have to be logged in with your username to be able to comment. |
April 26, 2024 LC7 | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Batting Box rule change Left handed player called out correctly, entirely within the box I remember the controversy last season when batters were called out for having their front foot outside of the front of the batter's box. The problem came from venues having shorter batter's boxes. Apparently SSUSA adopted the brand new U-trip rule about back foot and home plate. I'm curious whether SSUSA rule 1.5 - Batter's Box has also been changed, since it conflicts with the new rule. It seems to me they could have compromised and made a better rule: "A batter must Either have both feet within the batter's box Or their back foot behind the front of the mat when they hit the ball." This adjustment would serve the original purpose of keeping batters from encroaching toward the pitcher, and also allow a batter to use the entire legal sized batter's box without being called out. |
Jan. 13, 2024 LC7 | Topic: Teams looking for players Discussion: Player needed for 2024 season- Oregon 55AAA All-Quip/SOWC (Oregon) is moving to 55AAA for the 2024 season, and we need one more good player from OR, CA, WA, ID, or NV to fill our roster. Our biggest need is an outfielder, but we will move guys around for the right player. We are covered at pitcher, catcher, and first base. This is a competitive, fun team with great sponsors, and a group of guys who have played together for years. The first tourney will be Spring World Championships March 22-24 in St. George. Leave a message for Les Charter at (707)496-0923 if interested. |
May 12, 2023 LC7 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Carson City?? Just Curious FOFO, what specifically was unsafe? When I last played there in 2021, the grass was so long that batted balls would not roll very far, making it tough for outfielders and slowing everything down. That was more of a pain in the butt than unsafe. I'm really hoping it's short grass this year. |

May 12, 2023 LC7 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Carson City?? Just Curious Is there a host hotel in Carson City? My team is staying at Gold Dust West, and we would like to participate in the drawing for a free registration to the Vegas World Championships. As an aside, according to SSUSA Staff, it looks like the 40's have gone the longest without playing in CC (2015): Centennial Park Assignments Last 10 Years ¤ 2022 • 60+ Men (ALL) ¤ 2021 • 50-Major ¤ 2020 • No tournament [Pandemic] ¤ 2019 • 55-Major+, 55-Major & 55-AAA ¤ 2018 • 50-Major & 50-AAA ¤ 2017 • 60-AAA & 60-AA ¤ 2016 • 55-Major+, 55-Major & 55-AAA ¤ 2015 • 40-Masters Major+ & Major, 60-Major+ & 60-Major ¤ 2014 • 50-Major & 50-AAA ¤ 2013 • 60-AAA & 60-AA |
July 1, 2022 LC7 | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: Combined division at Jim Sherman If there are eight 50AAA teams signed up for Jim Sherman in Salem, that seems like enough for a standalone bracket. Are the 50AAA's also going to play 50M, 55M, and 55 Major Plus in their bracket? Because that's what the Men's 50/55-Gold division looks like. That doesn't seem right. Hopefully I'm misunderstanding how it's going to be. Anybody know? |
