Sept. 20, 2023 Nvjimmymac | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Patriotism Good morning softball players. My small way to show my pride in the USA is to carry a 3 x 5 American flag, with carabiner hooks, that I put up and display on the fence near our dugout. When the game is over I take it back down. After we take it down, I get one of our team member patriots to help me fold it properly and put it away until next game. The purpose of my message is to suggest other teams consider doing the same. It’s a small patriotic gesture that we can all do. Thanks. |

June 2, 2022 Nvjimmymac | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: What constitutes scoring at home plate Rule 8.9(1) says you must touch the outside home plate to score. Rule 8.9(2) says you just can’t touch the real home plate or violate the batter’s box. No mention of touching the other home plate. Thus my question, can a runner go to the right of the batter’s box lines, without touching, but not touch this other home plate and be safe? The rules seem to conflict with each other. Thanks. |
April 14, 2022 Nvjimmymac | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Costs to play in Senior Southwest Championship The method and cost of transportation is not germaine to the discussion nor is the cost of the hotel you choose or the restaurant at which you eat. The discussion should remain with the cost for a team (players) to step onto the field once they have settled into Las Vegas. I agree $24 isn't a budget buster for most, but that is not the point. Socialsm? You also make it sound like a team can choose which venue they want to play on. Obviously you cannot. You also continue to fail to recognize the difference between "entry fee" and what I call a "modified entree fee", be it only $24 per player or $360 for a team of 15. Thanks for providing this open forum and I realize you guys run these tournaments the best way you see fit. I appreciate all that SSUSA does for us older, not old, guys. This ends my comments on this subject as it is a done deal. Perhaps we can finish it one day over a beer. I'll see you Tuesday at BLD, and LET'S PLAY BALL! |
April 13, 2022 Nvjimmymac | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Costs to play in Senior Southwest Championship Oops, forgot to include the 40’s and 50’s, 41 teams, in the calculations. My guess is the additional teams would change the team fee to $50 or more. Again the point stays the same: all teams should pay the same entry fee. |
April 13, 2022 Nvjimmymac | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Costs to play in Senior Southwest Championship I agree and did some rough math. There are approximately 90 games at BLD. Assuming a team plays 2 games per day for one fee, 45 games are paid for. Each team’s players will have to pay 3 times. 45 games times 15 players per team gives a total of 675 gate fees being paid. This does not include family members. Total fees paid is 675 times $8 which equals $5400. If you take this $5400 of fees divided by 246, the number of entered teams, you get $22 per team. Therefore, if each team paid an entry fee of $640 plus their $22 share of BLD fees, the entire cost could be equally shared by all teams irrespective of where they are playing. Cost per team would then be $662, a cost that would ensure all teams pay the same amount to play in the tournament and no player would have to pay an entree fee. I am not sure my math or assumptions are correct, but I think you catch my drift. |
March 26, 2022 Nvjimmymac | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Batting out of order A pinch runner who is going to bat soon is put in to run. As luck would have it he winds up on third base with one out. A fly ball is hit to left field and caught; two outs. The man on third is now up. Can he now be replaced with a pinch runner so that he may bat or is he out because he is stuck on third base? |

Nov. 16, 2020 Nvjimmymac | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Orange and white bases at first Thanks, I agree with part of your answer. I am not talking about the obvious base hit that goes thru and past the infielder. In that case, the first baseman surrenders the fair territory base to the runner and gets out of the way. The scenario I question is a ground ball being fielded by the infielder and being bobbled or dropped on what would probably have been out. The first baseman is in position to finish the play when the error occurs. What you are advocating is the first baseman should not be on the base until he is sure the throw is on it’s way. I don’t agree. He is set the entire time and the runner is not allowed on the fair territory base because of the impending play. You are asking for an injury if you require the ball to be at first base before the runner is required to go to the foul territory base. Safety first, that is why we have 2 bases. Thanks. |
Nov. 15, 2020 Nvjimmymac | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Orange and white bases at first rule 8.4(1) Batter-runner reaching first base "If there is a play on a batter-runner going to first base, the batter-runner must touch some portion of the double bag extending into foul territory ( the orange bag). He will be called out if he fails to do so........ My question is; the first baseman is set to receive the throw, but the fielder bobbles it. Thus, there is not a play at first base, but the first baseman has set-up in anticipation for a throw. The batter-runner not knowing the ball has been bobbled, continues thru and goes to the fair territory base. Is the batter-runner still out for not going to the foul territory base? I still see this being interpreted as a play on the batter-runner even though the ball never reached first. I see it is a safety issue and the batter-runner is out. The umpire said no since there was not a play. Someone is going to get hurt with that kind of call. The double base is there for a reason. Your thoughts, thanks. |
Sept. 15, 2020 Nvjimmymac | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: You make the call Men on first and third, 2 outs, and the 5th run is on third. One guy says put a runner on to load the bases. He says this Is a no brainer and is done always in this situation. Another guy says no. He says the batter in this case is the last man in their line up and will most likely make an out, therefore, we don’t load the bases. In discussion after the inning, the second guy says the quality of the guy batting overrides the “put him on” decision. Thus the question; in this situation is it an automatic load them up or is the quality of the batter the overriding factor. What say you? |
