Dec. 7, 2022 RDSinNEOHIO | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Minutemen, Pepco SFS It is with great sadness to report that our 65+ travel softball team out of the Cleveland, Ohio area has lost our manager today. Barry Benjamin sat down in a chair at noon after a morning of indoor hitting, slumped over and soon was gone. Barry was an excellent softball player and manager over the past several years but most of all was a great person and friend. He will be missed. Godspeed my friend and prepare those softball fields up there for the rest of us. |

Sept. 16, 2021 RDSinNEOHIO | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: FT Myers - 65 Major Field location That has always been a pain for this tournament. You need to make reservations months ahead of time, but don't know if you'll be playing in Naples, Fort Myers or Cape Coral. We've always stayed at motels at the Bell Tower Shops in Fort Myers only because we figure it's in the middle sort of. We've ended up playing at all three sites in the past. |
July 8, 2021 RDSinNEOHIO | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: What's the correct call? Here's a new one. Bases loaded, one out, bottom of 7th. Batter nearly swings and misses but "foul tips" the ball backwards. After a brief time in the air, the ball hits the very back of the mat and bounces up. The catcher then catches the ball after the bounce and tags the batter. Umpire rules that the mat was part of home plate and therefore a fair ball even though the ball was now behind the batter. In addition, with the hit, the runner on third came halfway down the line, the ump ruled he passed the commit line and therefore he was called out in addition to the batter, GAME OVER. Protested to no avail that the ball should have been ruled a foul ball. What was the right call? |

Aug. 29, 2020 RDSinNEOHIO | Topic: Players looking to join a team Discussion: Tournament Team - Northeast Ohio Area Travel tourney teams in NE Ohio, there are three in 65's, two east side and one west side. Shannon Fence and McMahon-Coyne-Vitonio are 65 AA out of Mentor and Minutemen/Pepco/SFS are 60 AAA and 65 AAA, west side Brook Park. |
July 22, 2019 RDSinNEOHIO | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Correct call The umpire said the runner on 2nd did tag up, but it was still a force at 2nd and he did not need to be tagged. To make matters worse on your other question, the runner on third actually did cross home plate for what should have been the tying run before the out at second, but the ump said he was out to make the call at second and did not see the runner cross the plate and therefore would not allow the run to count. |
July 22, 2019 RDSinNEOHIO | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Correct call Rec league game last Friday night. We're down 6-5, bottom of 7th, one out, bases loaded. Batter hits long fly to left over left fielders head, but he makes an ESPN worthy catch over the shoulder. Runner on third (potential tying run) left early but did not cross commit line. Sees the catch and runs back to third to tag up. Meanwhile, runner on second does tag up, gets about 1/2 to third and sees the other runner still on third so goes back to second. Ball gets thrown around to cutoff man who eventually throws to second. Second baseman catches ball steps on second and ump calls the runner out, says it's a force play, double-play, ballgame. We argue to no avail that runner had tagged up and since he's going back to the bag, needed to be tagged to be out. What's the call? |

Sept. 22, 2016 RDSinNEOHIO | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: Ft Myers 60 AAA field location Our team is already booked at the Crown Plaza Bell Tower Shops in Fort Myers. If we've got a vote, sure would like it to be at the Lee County Sports Complex. Beautiful fields. Wasn't as crazy about the Cape Coral diamonds we played at two years ago. By the way Dave, nice talking to you in Lansing at the Northern Championships. (Minutemen/Pepco/SFS)... |
May 4, 2016 RDSinNEOHIO | Topic: Players looking to join a team Discussion: 69 Year OLd Player Mike, Kentucky is a borderline state with Ohio. Barry Benjamin played with Roger, talk to Coyne. Maybe he could play with our 60's team in tourneys. Or I hear rumors of Shelly trying to start a 65f team.... |
April 13, 2016 RDSinNEOHIO | Topic: Bats Discussion: Non-senior bats I'm sure this topic has probably been discussed before, but we have a 50+ YMCA Rec league up here in Cleveland that uses a dead ball and has outlawed all senior bats. I currently use a 4 year old DeMarini bat, but any suggestions out there on a decent non-senior bat to use? |
Feb. 14, 2016 RDSinNEOHIO | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Renting a car from Budget Just to update, a day after filling out the Budget survey, I was contacted by a Budget representative. They had looked into the situation following my comments and said they would refund the difference. A few hours later, I had a credit applied to my credit card account. So all's well that ends well. Just in the future, gotta make sure to check out all the fine print. |
Feb. 11, 2016 RDSinNEOHIO | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Renting a car from Budget Thanks Dave/Fran or whomever is looking into this. Second year for our Cleveland team at the TOC, enjoyed seeing you at the manager's meeting. We went 3-3 but had a great time regardless. It was only this little thing that was agravating. Budget sent me a survey as well and in my comments, I simply said refunding me $144.95 would be a whole lot less costly than me editorializing on the message board and possibly costing them thousands of revenue in the future from us senior softball players who would rather rent a car elsewhere from here on out. |
Feb. 9, 2016 RDSinNEOHIO | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Renting a car from Budget OK, maybe my own fault, but nevertheless, I'm ticked off. Went to the TOC last week. Usually I rent a car through my employer with Enterprise. But I clicked on the Budget Rent-a Car button on this website and they were offering cars a little bit cheaper. Filled out the app, got to the Orlando airport, and upon returning the car the following Monday when leaving, found out they just about double-charged me due to an insurance they tacked on. I had told the man at the desk I declined, but when I called the 800 number to complain, customer service at Budget said they tacked it on anyway because of something that it was required due to the Senior Softball profile. They said it couldn't be reversed. So instead of the $180 I was supposed to pay, got charged $350. Go elsewhere my friends. |

Sept. 29, 2008 RDSinNEOHIO | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Balls of Fury If you're talking senior softball, at least in the Cleveland area, there's a couple of leagues. Talent-wise, the best league is in Maple Heights where you can find regular players all the way up to a few Major-Plus players. Mayfield Heights and North Royalton also have 50+ leagues but not tournament-quality competitive. There's a SPA tournament held in Brookpark every year Memorial day and there was also a SSUSA qualifier in Akron. I'm sure the folks in Akron, Columbus, Dayton and Cincinnati would love to chime in also about Ohio senior softball. |
July 14, 2008 RDSinNEOHIO | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: AA Home Run Power Hey Rabbit, congrats on a great tourney from AMR. It was nice to put a face with the name. As for us, we hit our share of home runs throughout the tourney, but its about the 5th consecutive Major tournament we've spent money for and travelled to and not won a single game. We were semi-competitve against the Merchants and Coors Light; you guys blew us out as did Checkcare. Not to be whiney, but as for ratings, shouldn't we be entitled to be competitive in the AAA division before getting moved to Major and then stuck there because the powers to be won't let us move down? |
