| Oct. 2, 2025 9 ball | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: player rankings and eligibility for 2026. This past summer was gonna be a utility player on local 70M team playing in ssusa qualifier tournament in CT. Wx was very hot/humid,so an extra player was helpful. I joined 3yrs ago as a 70, was assigned a default rating of 70AAA,and played in only 1 70AAA tournament with total 8 at bats my first year. I'm not a "ringer" by any stretch of the imagination,so didn't think much of this move. But, I did check with HQ in SAC, and was surprised that this would elevate me to 70M status immediately and for the next couple years. I tried but did not get picked up by any 70AAA teams in this tournament. Also had to decline offer from 70M to play,.. just could not accept a rating upgrade outside my playing ability. I do understand the need for safeguards to prevent roster abuses by the few,but it's discouraging. I'm looking at alternatives for next year. Tku Geo |
| July 22, 2025 9 ball | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Courtesy runner Hi k man..I play up here in 65+ RI league, and reviewed our local provisions for runners. They seem to be a fair way to accommodate borderline players, while not providing an unacceptable advantage to the player's team. This is our league guidelines: 1)designate runners from the plate for up to 2 specified batters before game starts. 2)runners start within circle about 5 ft to right of homeplate. 3)batter cannot run toward 1b after contact..called out if goes halfway. 4)doesn't matter if hit is 1b/2b/3b/4b runner has to stop at 1b. "Runner from the plate" is announced so defensive players can adjust their positions. All present baserunners are free to advance as they are able. 5)runner can then remain on 1b,or get a courtesy runner before next pitch. Doesn't seem to provide for same person running from plate and also as a courtesy runner later within same inning. This modification helps us keep folks "in the game" and runs smoothly throughout the game. I'm 72 and still having fun..geo |
| July 21, 2025 9 ball | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Courtesy runner Hey Dave..seems we do operate league play under ssusa rules, but have modified certain provisions to accommodate the infamous "runner from the plate" for the guys who can still play, but have difficulty running. The designated runner cannot progress past 1st base on any base hit, with all other baserunners advancing as they can. I now have to check our local rules. Tku geo |
| July 21, 2025 9 ball | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Courtesy runner Served as runner from the plate for batter. Later same inning, tried to sub as courtesy runner at 1st base, was told not allowed to run twice same inning. We play under ssusa rules. What's up? Tku geo |
| June 4, 2025 9 ball | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Runner hit by line drive while standing on 1st base Tku BJ and Peoria Player for both the wording and specific rule location that covers this situation. I have my own copy of SSUSA rulebook, but could not locate anything specific. The nearest defensive player(1st baseman) I believe was stationed behind the runner, so batter should have been awarded 1st base with a declared "dead ball", and base runners forced advanced to next base. Tough call for umpire to get right, they have to be aware of defensive alignments among all the other stuff they track. George |
| June 3, 2025 9 ball | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Runner hit by line drive while standing on 1st base Bases loaded no outs. Batter smacks hard line drive toward 1st base, runner cannot dodge quick enough and is hit while standing on white bag. Umpire declared dead ball and batter is out. League plays under SSUSA rules..what you guys think, and why? Tku george |
| May 27, 2025 9 ball | Topic: Players looking to join a team Discussion: Looking to play in CT Masters I'm available as utility player, can cover most positions. Age 72 rated as 70AAA, hit well with good arm. League player 2x/wk in RI,where I live. Competitive teammate who can help you win. |
| Feb. 13, 2025 9 ball | Topic: Bats Discussion: Miken Ultra II Had a new 27oz miken black bat(1/2 oz EL) last year that I really liked for the"pop" and comfortable feel when hitting. Unfortunately not made well enough to survive past about 75 swings, developed crack around upper handle. The miken brown bat(27oz bal) I purchased new with the black bat hits well, and is still going strong after about 300 swings. Seems to me buying a new Miken bat nowadays is a "crapshoot",good pop but unsure quality/longevity with no warranty. With the new compression testing checks, you may want to see where your 2 bats place...above or below the cutoff before you buy new bats. George 5'8" 200lbs Age 72. Have fun! |
| Jan. 31, 2025 9 ball | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Team rating update Dave..Will team ratings be updated after TOC? Maybe still "under construction"? I do understand after LV Worlds there are automatic "triggers" in place based on results there, but what are basic criteria after that? Just curious. Tku George |

| Jan. 23, 2025 9 ball | Topic: Bats Discussion: Bat Testing Morng folks, been a lot of decent discussion here on BB concerning pre-game bat testing and rules/penalties as a result of. When I'm eventually asked to submit my bat for a compression check, and I'm standing at the table as I hand it over to that person, what should I then expect to see happen? Who is this individual that I have given custody of my bat to,who will run the test, will I actually see the test reading as I'm standing there, and how long does this procedure take. Pls note..just trying to understand what to expect as standard practice. Tku george |
| Jan. 21, 2025 9 ball | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: TOC Florida WX Yea made for kinda awkward situation for me this morng. We had informal inside bp this morng up here in New England area, overheard couple players going down to play 65M discussing game temps and wishing they had couple "junk" bats to use. I have 3yr old miken ultra2 28oz JB/MD both with over 400 swings, and would not mind these bats making the trip in support of local team,as I have recently purchased replacements. I said nothing though. My concern is will these bats pass compression testing at TOC, and if not, will that place the players in jeopardy? Tough call for me to make, as I subscribe to players being held accountable for bats they bring with them for use in a tournament. The gray area for me is players just trying to check on a used bat's compression level prior to game use, for safety sake. Geo |
| Jan. 20, 2025 9 ball | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: TOC Florida WX Noticed WX in Lakeland/WinterHaven area gonna be little chilly. W/T/F 50's,S 60's, then return to normal 70's on Sun. Gonna be interesting to see how well all those expensive composite bats hold up,seeing they are supposedly not designed for use below 65 degrees.Oh well, everyone have fun, wish I were there. George |
| Jan. 17, 2025 9 ball | Topic: Bats Discussion: Miken/Rawlings Johnny Bailiey 2024--defective bats? Purchased 27oz JB bat jan24,started using Spring practice games. After about 75 swings noticed a deep notch near top of handle, which spread around the handle during next BP. Showed to some players, they advised me to no longer use it, due to chance the carbon composition may "eventually splinter" at plate and be a hazard to nearby players. Sounded good to me,so threw it in nearby trash can. I have new 27oz MD bal which I used entire season with no problems, and 2yr old 28oz JB and MD which both have about 400 swings with no problems(yet). I like the bats, but will not buy another JB after my recent experience with black2024. Good luck to everyone at 2025 TOC! Geo |
| Jan. 11, 2025 9 ball | Topic: Bats Discussion: Bat Idea I could support wood bats in lieu of composite bats, maybe bring the offensive game back to a more natural state, and make defense relevant again. I have aluminum bats I use for bat practice, and get all shorts of weird looks from other players when they hear that "ding" on contact..it's funny. Even been told by another player they were not legal for play. But man, they last forever, and don't cost an arm and a leg. George |
| Jan. 2, 2025 9 ball | Topic: Bats Discussion: Bat Holder Only if you do this for all the team bats, every inning. Sorry, but I'll take care of my own bat..thank you. Lol everyone have a safe and fun new season. George |
| Dec. 26, 2024 9 ball | Topic: Bats Discussion: High price of softball bats I've been scrolling around, looking for a new bat to purchase for upcoming ssusa season. Got "sticker shock" when I noted 2025 USA/ASA certified bat with price of $1000. Was even more shocked when they declared it came with no warranty. To each their own, but c'mon folks, seriously?! Any thoughts on this from my fellow players? Tku george |
| Dec. 14, 2024 9 ball | Topic: Website comments Discussion: Definition Please Tku for informative reply Donna, seems nothing is as easy as it appears. For my future guidance, I assume the following ssusa bat requirements apply..1)newer bats must have ssusa logo/stamp on handle,2)older bats that are not on prohibited list must display bpf of either 1.21 or 1.20. Tku geo |
| Dec. 14, 2024 9 ball | Topic: Website comments Discussion: Definition Please Morng folks..can I get a reminder why we can no longer use a USA/ASA bat in SSUSA sponsored events? Did that originate out of a safety concern,or some administrative decision to just go our own way? Not trying to "be cute" here, just lost track of the reasoning why we can no longer use a bat more durable and better suited to unfavorable gametime conditions such as low temps? Tku geo |
