Does not matter if they are playing 2 or 3 teams in a weekend or a bunch in league play over several weeks. Sure, some may get a little edgy of they lose but it's all forgotten by the next time they get out on that field. All of them are special in my book, having the ability to play the game they love at their age and relative health. No use getting into particulars about rules and the such. They all have to abide by them. If one does not like specifics, going to another association is always an alternative. |

Some prefer not to play weekends due to other considerations. Most play league (weekdays or nights)after playing tourney ball for many years. Most of them can play both if they wanted, just a matter of preference. Ability is a non-issue. They all like to play ball. |

Actually one should make time to rest, otherwise lingering injuries or joints that do not recoop enough in time for the next game. Nobody was designed to play 7 or 8 games within a two day period, but thats tournament ball for you. Having enough bodies on the roster to spell players during games or simply not starting ones due to play later on is a big item. Easy for me to state but really hard to do especailly players who play tournament and league play in tandum. It's a long season. |

In Northern Cal/Sacto area there was the senior league games Sat. morning at Howe Park, weekend tournaments at Northgate in Manteca with the mature NCSSA teams, ASA LCS in Galt,Davis,and Folsom with a few players playing both senior and with the young guys not to mention a couple of players I know that manage some fastpitch teams the same weekend on top of that..... All this happening at once. Then there are the teams that already qualified that chose not to play to maybe perhaps pool their resources to Phoenix. Lastly, the teams that may not be going anywhere but just want to play one more tourney before the shadows get too long. I don't really know. |

I know of individuals that go overboard with several teams and leagues. I've tried it before but I'm just not that dedicated to see who's available on the waiver wire each week. Better to enjoy watching the game and may the best team win. |

| July 18, 2011 green rocket | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: How do the other major teams feel about major and major plus in western national All good points stated gentlemen. Your concerns certainly are not falling upon deaf ears. Terry, Dave, Fran, and the rest of the SSUSA staff reading this will explore all options available to try to remedy the situation. You guys are a good chunk of Senior Softball and it would be a shame not to have your teams in any tournament that is within your participation. As far as the fields are concerned, you have to understand the politics involved with the different organizations. Maidu and Meheany fields in Roseville are very good and have been used for the Cal Cup in the past but are run and maintained by people with close ties to ASA softball. In the past they have tried to cut into SSUSA action with disasterous results so they in turn make those fields unavailable to SSUSA in spite. Davis is excellent, Woodland is good, Patch field had to be used due to the vacinity of the others. Senior Softball has no control on how Vacaville maintains their facility. |

I've been an umpire over 20 years now and was thinking about a recent tournament I've done. The Sacramento Gold is one of my favorite teams I was honored to officate in the 70's division. A great bunch of guys like manager Norm Blackwell, his brother John, Stan Adams, John Venable, John Wade and the rest of the team. Some of these guys would of scared the hell out of me with their abilites in their heyday. They are out there playing ball, happy to play the game they love and still having some of the god given talents and health to do so. I see the little boys in them just as I see my own son playing little league the other day also. My son had drooping pants from all the rocks he had in his pocket playing first base. Snow cones and hot dogs. Lore of the American tradition. Working also leagues with the young bucks, in inbetweeners (20-30 year olds)...is where attitudes, egos, dubious sportmanship, politics and driven desires are cultivated. I much rather prefer the ends of the ruler. |
| May 6, 2010 green rocket | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: curveball Also, if the fact that the second HP is fixed to the ground via spikes and is even with the surface of the playing field. As an umpire, I've seen these HP's well above the surface and a potential ankle breaker if hit wrong. I've removed them before for saftey reasons and drawn a scoring line with my foot. Never got an arguement from a ballplayer or team doing so. I will say that I've done this in smaller tournaments but never in a SSUSA major tournament. They seem to take care of this issue by placeing them correctly. Many ballplayers also do not realize that hitting the white inside 1B bag while running down the line is an out without appeal in SSUSA. Of course this rule's exception is if the 1st basemen while attempting to field the throw to him is inadvertantly carried into foul territory and the runner is forced into hitting the inside white base. All for safety. |

| April 27, 2010 green rocket | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Tournament in Concord Joe, 2 weeks ago in Vacaville, Seward's tournament used the Baden .44/375 Fire. As an umpire, I was very impressed on how well the ball held up and how it carried if you hit it good. Some of the ballplayers said they used that ball in their league play and was happy with it. I know you've socked this ball sometime in the past. Hopefully we will see this ball again in future tounaments. |

| March 11, 2010 green rocket | Topic: Associations Discussion: King and His Court I remember a benefit celebrity softball game for UNICEF that he did which was televised on NBC in the 60's. They had chairman Danny Kaye in the broadcast booth. It was the Hollywood celebrities against major league ballplayers and after an inning or two, they slipped in the King without the MLB ballplayers knowing. I remember him striking out Wilie Mays and Ron Santo. None of those guys could hit him. It was great, and sneaky.... 8^) |

I've seen quality senior softball teams pushed to get off the field so some low level co-rec E and below (league play) can get on and play their game. It's just not right.... They milk you dry by having to pay each day you play. Their concessions are good but major league prices. Plus, once you've played a couple of times on fields like that, they lose their novelty. For Vegas, I've always liked their fields in Henderson, NV. Rancho Arroyo I think they are called? |
| Feb. 15, 2010 green rocket | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Hybrid Turf Fields Hybred fields are the new wave for right now, and the mentioned maintainence free is a big issue. They are popping up all over the place and competition if fierce for your hard earned playing dollars. Like Omar said, even with these new synthetic fields, certain maintainece issues still have to be dealt with. First, is the baselines around the bases, where one would slide. These get worn in just a short time and need to be replaced. I've seen them replaced like carpet, a patch and then you have a very uneven surface. Heat is another issue. When it gets over 80 degrees, your playing on a hot rubber surface and the heat reflects right back up at you. Not very pleasent. Woodland, CA where they had the California State Championships, has giant water guns to wet the fields and cool it, but it is only temporary. Also after playing a few innings, the balls get real dirty (rubber marks) all over them and are more difficult to pick up in the outfield. The last time I was in Palm Springs, their BLD complex was rather shoddy with paint chipping and very low upkeep of the dirt infelds and grass outfield. I'm glad SSUSA moved their Winter World;s from this site. |

| Dec. 18, 2009 green rocket | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Cut-off Not so much senior ball, but a lot of young bucks want the glory of throwing out a fast runner. Not only does the runner advance, the trail runner(s) move up also. In my years, I've seen outfielders showcase their arms early on to warn the baserunners what to expect. Then there is the runner who baits an outfielder to see what he's got for a hose. A lot of players pick up on what is out there and will take advantage of a weak arm or lacking fundementals to pull of a victory. Practice makes perfect, and hitting that cutoff means practicing what you want to do in a game situation. Younger players certainly do not have the fundamentals the senior players have. They have the ability but lack of discipline seems to be the norm. |
