Discussion: Pensacola

Bruce -- The Pensacola scheduling was not the best in many ways, late games on Sunday for the 50-60 Divisions being just one of them.
#1 -- Pensacola's first attempt at playing the "play-back" 5 game guarantee.
#2 -- Teams still playing after their 5 game guarantee and 2 bracket loses.
#3 -- Directors were under the impression that it was a "triple" elimination format until it was pointed out that the brackets were incorrect.
#4 -- Fields were empty while teams were sitting and waiting to play. (No Umpires)
#5 -- Teams playing down 2 brackets and getting the 5 run equalizer
Example: 70 Major Plus played 65 AAA and received the equalizer, plus 11 defensive players.

I hope Mike and the Pensacola hosts will review this tournament and learn from it. I enjoy playing in Pensacola and this will not deter us from returning.

Discussion: tournaments for league bats only

The 60+ Senior League in Orlando has to play by ASA rules. Meaning ASA bats and 44/375 balls.

As always, some players cannot afford the better ASA bats and others take extra measures to "Improve" their bats.

We are implementing a "league bat" concept. We bought 4 ASA bats (26,27,28,30) that all teams must use, no exceptions. The bats are kept on a rack behind home plate for each team's use.

No more complaining about an unfair advantage due to bats.

AZTOMC -- You have stated on
other message boards that you
are a representative for
the Veteran bat.

How could you give an unbiased
review of the bat? Appears
to me as a sales pitch.

Senior Moments 60's of Orlando is looking for an outfielder (AA, AAA, Major) for the SPA tournament in Charleston, SC beginning April 17-19. I know it is a stretch, but we need a player that can field and does not need a runner.

Requirements: Must have a SPA player ID card and has not played in Major Plus division, live in Florida, GA, AL. (Still time to get a card). Please call Shelby at 407-257-5522 for more details.

Discussion: DBO/PPR rule - still protecting nobody

The DBO in no way protects balls from being hit up the middle. A common sense deterent from hitting up the middle is to put another fielder in the middle.

Why don't all divisions use the 11th man in the middle that has to play defense within a 10-ft. "box" area of second base. If out of the "box", a ball is called on the batter.

The extra man, "Not a Rover", does two things: (1) It allows another player to play; (2) It offers some deterent from hitting up the middle. There is no "magic" fixall.

If the "boxman" does not play in a postion to protect the middle, then it is the defenseive team's fault, not the offense.

Discussion: Host Hotel Surcharge

As a team manager, I have a difficult time justifying the "double standard" entry fees to my teammates. There is not a common sense explanation I can give my team.

I just reviewed the entry list for the 2008 Spring Nationals in Polk County last year and of the 54 teams entered, 39 were from the State of Florida. Of the 39 Florida teams, 31 were within commuting distance and did not need a hotel.

What happens to the Spring Nationals if the Florida teams do not play due to the "lodging surcharge" provision?

Discussion: Substitution / Courtesty Runner

Situation;

Smith (substitute) pinch hits for Jones. Smith is now in the game and scores. 3 batters later, Jones is used as a courtesty runner for Adams. How can Smith and Jones be in the lineup at the same time? Smith was still in the game, he was just not on base. Can Jones re-enter at anytime?

Prostest was made but disallowed. My understanding as per SPA rule book, Sec.2, page 26, is that both players cannot be in the game at the same time.

When does a sub become and player and when can the player re-enter?

All you rules guys, please assist.

Discussion: SPA tournaments, Please for those who have attended in last few years

The two (2) big differences that make SPA stand out is that they use 2 umpires in seeding games and they furnish a scorekeeper.

As a manager, this at least makes me think I am getting a little more for my money.

Discussion: HR shaggers?

As a team that attends several national tournaments and hosts a state tournament, it has always been my opinion that the host is responsible for all facets of the tournament. Entry fees are paid to play softball, not be ball boys or scorekeepers!

I am sure the hosts, both national and local, factor in the costs of balls and scorers when they charge the entry fees. If not, they should.

Scorekeepers:
Maybe this should be a different thread, but a national tournament without scorekeepers is not a complete tournament. The controversies that can, and do arise about scoring should not be left up to the individual teams. Again, the cost of scorekeepers should be in the entry fees.
