Yeah, I get that it's probably the only easy way to police it. But your numbers indicate that the "hot' bat is well above the illegal number. Which probably means many altered bats make it past any screening.

Does this mean an older bat that is BPF 1.20 and has a USSSA or other assoc. logo no longer approved? I have an old Easton Rebel metal bat that is almost brand new with USSSA 1.20BPF, ASA, NSA 2012 and ISA approvals on it that I'd like to use.

After spending a lot of time reading about this subject I'm now convinced that measuring compression of a bat is pretty lame way to rule out 'illegal' bats. The field testers are not laboratory instruments that have the technology or reliability to be consistent.

ASTM Standard F-1890, which is what the industry uses to test and rate bats, doesn't use "compression" for rating bat performance because it is unreliable as a measure of bat performance.

Here is a great article discussing compression.

The other issues that it appears to get to 140 without the bat actually cracking the bat would have to be "shaved" which is obviously illegal.

While I can't prove it, it appears that if you tried to "roll" a bat down to the minimum(140) the rolling process itself would cause the bat to crack. I got this from a couple of folks that do bat rolling, as a retired engineer I am fascinated by this subject.

tattoball, I get that. I'm trying to figure out if it's psi, grams/cm squared, etc. The 140 is in pounds, which is a measure of force without saying if it is a point force or measured over an area.

Thanks, Fabe, I figured that might be the case but what unit is the 1500 refering to? I know it can't be pounds since that would be 10 times what the testers indicate for senior bats. Since all the testers seem to be build on the same principal, I am curious. I'm a retired engineer and it's cold and nasty outside and I'm a bit bored.

I read that the 140 refers to pounds of compression. I've also seen other articles where they had numbers in the 1500's. What units are we dealing with and why the difference?

Gary, there are actually tools called bat hammers(or mallets) used in cricket. A ballplayer did a similar thing by mount a softball on the end of a hammer handle to use to 'break in" a bat. This instead of hitting balls off a tee. As you can see from the thread here it's not allowed. Here is the video...

"When these cheaters have their bats rolled they get squeezed down to about half the size of the barrel of the bat." lb16 is that what you meant to say? Because the way I read it that means a bat barrel would be reduced in size from 2-1/4 inch diameter to 1-1/8".

Not sure that is even possible with what I know about composite materials. That much crushing would result in massive cracks in the material. I spent 40+ years of my life as an engineer so I have to be reading your post wrong. If you look on youtube under 'bat rolling' you'll see the equipment they use and none of it is capable of reducing a cylinder of composite material from 2-1/4" diameter to 1-1/8" without severe damage.

Just registered today, so didn't see that email or I wouldn't have posted.

I understand that rolled bats are considered illegal. You can achieve the same thing by carefully hitting of a tee a few hundred times or using a bat hammer (a softball mounted on a shaft). So why is rolling considered illegal?

Discussion: Bat Idea

I'm new to senior softball, started playing again after 20+ years and the discussion on bats is puzzling to me. From what I've read you can only us SSUSA "approved bats of BPF1.21 or less. Since all the associations(ASA, USSSA, etc) use the same method to determine BPF it seems kinda weird that you can't use any bat with an association approved stamp. Anyone care to comment?
