Discussion: Knee Replacement

Norq44:

You are exactly where I was last year this time as I went down to Bradenton for the Winter. I have played sostball 3-4 times a week yearly with 8- 12 Summer tournaments as Manager of the Millers team. I was bone on bone but iIwas misdiagnosed at first and spent last winter getting all kinds of shots and then the brace from California which was a waste of money(Medicares). I chose to get a total knee replacement July 9th this year and my Dr. told me NOT to play competitive softball again for fear that an injury to the new knee could be disasterous. My new knee is great and I am sure that I can do anything that I did before. However, I will decide in November if I will return to Softball. DON'T wait, the longer you wait the more damage you do to the rest of your body.

Discussion: Passing of Charles Miller

Charles (Chuck) Miller:

It is my sad duty to report that Charles Miller, Sponsor and player of the Millers 70 and numerous other teams passed away this morning in bed. My friend Charlie was one of the most respected Sponsor, player and most importantly person one would ever want to be associated with. He will be missed by all of the Senior softball world.

My team is turning 70 with 2/3 of the players going up. I spoke with Fran and she said that we use the roster we used to win our tournament and we play the same clasification that we won with. You can pick up if necessary but check with her first.

Gary:

As always, our players pay for all expensesto travel. Our sponsor(Chuck Miller) pays for entries and uniforms which is a big expense when we go to 12-13 tournaments per year.

A lot of the guys drive together and triple up on rooms.

I agree with you regarding the timing of this tournament. We(Millers 65) received a formal invitation to participate as a result of winning the Eastern National Championship and will be there in February with 15-16 players, most of which will not have played since October.

SSUSA will pay 1/2 of the $500.00 entry fee.

100%:

You are correct that there was a team in 2003 that was beat 28-0 in 2 innnings and did not complain but accepted their 2nd place awards with grace even though the team that beat them had mercied every other team that they played. That was a 65 AAA division game. The next year SPA and Ridge Hooks awarded that team a co-championship and all the awards that go along with it. What a classy thing to do. Ironically, the team that lost that game was MILLERS 65. Midwest could have learned from that experience.

Actually its a perfect world if everyone would use the same bat(no matter which one) then the abilities would come thru and you would not have to worry about whether you were rich enough or smart enough to figure out which bat is best. Food for thought?

Discussion: New rule for the pitcher

I have pitched since 50+ which is approximately 20 years. I think we have done enough for the pitchers to "protect" them. The problem is with the pithers that should not be pitching because they dont have the ability and quickness to field the position. All they do is try to get the ball over and stand there as a target.

I also am a hitter that likes to use the middle when I can since I am not a power hitter. We are changing the game that we all love so much that a lot of good players are leaving. This holds true for the proposed changes against homeruns(which I have never hit).

I beleive that the game should be left as it is to insure its integrity. There have been some needed changes to take the contact out of the game which improves Senior ball. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

Joe:

Teams can apply for rerating at any time by filing the proper forms with the 3 main associations. However, in the case of the 65s even though 1 team got rerated in October they had to play in their prior division in Phoenix.

The system is not perfect but its better than nothing and I believe the 3 men who do the reratings Hennessy,Hooks and Thomas) do a good job even though we were turned down last time we applied.

I agree that there is sandbagging. Des Moines & St. George are 2 places where it happens a lot. But you cant punish the teams that have proven their ratings are accurate.

You are using a brush to paint all teams the same color. AAA & AA teams pay the same entry fee as Major & Major +. Why should they not get the same awards? I agtee that teams do sandbag
