| Jan. 12, 2013 Player25 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: rotator cuff rehab Have had 3 rotator cuff tears repaired. Rehabing a tear takes less time then a total separation repair. Tell your PT what your goal is to be playing again. He can generally tailor a program to get you close. My experience has been the longer you put off the surgery the longer the rehab period. My first took about 1 year but I had put it off a long time. The second and third were 4-6 months. In addition to the rehab, I went to "hot" yoga classes. The warmth help to loosen up the muscles and tendons. At first I used the "good" arm to help with the exercises. The main thing I learned was listen to your body. |

He played with the Winchell 35+ and 40+ teams in the late 90's and early 2000,s. He played with Doc's out of Sioux City, IA on their National champion team in early 2000,s. From 2002-2006, Tristate Easton out of Kentucky. They won the B state twice. He was the MVP at the McNair Classic. From 2007-2011, Icon out of Evansville. He has been named All-american several times in 35+ and 40 +. Thanks for your interest. Hope this helps. |

| Aug. 10, 2011 Player25 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Hit today a 275 by 52 ball Played in a tourney 2 weeks ago using the AD Star Tattoo 52 275 NSA ball. The bats were 38 oz. Bombats, XBH, etc. Played on a 290 ft fence. The ball worked very well. Those who should be hitting hr's did and those who should not, did not. Score were in the mid- 20 runs per game on average. There was a lot of defense also. There was a mix of ages but everyone said it was the most fun they had all year. They could not wait to play again next year. Most of the players were from various tourney teams. There was a lot of talent at this tourney. We have also hit these used balls in batting practice with Demarini White Steel bats. We are hitting them consistently over 300 ft. This is both as senior players and younger. Just wanted to provide some input. |
| Dec. 19, 2010 Player25 | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Plate & Mat as Strike I am a batter. Have pitched in the past but no longer. I am okay with the plate being a strike but I believe the batters box should be lengthen in the the front by the approx 17" to keep players who want to stand in the front of the box from being called out for being out of the box. I believe the plate being a strike has caused more players to "walk up" in the box. I believe this has also led to less control of where the ball is hit. (Potentially more shots at the pitcher) As to the mat, absolutely hate it. Balls are called strikes that never cross the plate but hit the mat. Others are called balls that crossed the plate but did not hit the mat. High pitches hit the back of the mat but do not cross the strike zone. If they want to use the mat as a guide it would be okay but to have a rule if the ball hits the mat it is a strike is unfair in so many ways. |
| Dec. 19, 2010 Player25 | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Courtesy Runner Positive & Negative Views First let me state, I understand why a courtesy runner may be needed for certain players. However, I believe it gives a big advantage to teams that have the ability to bring "rabbits" to run for every slow player. Part of winning to me, is the stamina it takes to play 5,6,7, ... games. Running for yourself takes a lot of energy. If another team has "rabbits", the player in the game exerts much less energy, thus the advantage. I have the same arguement for "hit and sit" on homeruns. A team that has the ability to hit a considerable number of homeruns get to rest their players versus a team that base hits and runs the bases. This is especially noticable on Sundays when the hr hitters have been run for when they did not hit an hr. This is one reason why I think excess home runs need to be outs. As to courtesy runners, I feel there should be 1-2 per inning but the players should be designated to the umpire before the game except in the case of an injury during the players turn at bat. |
| Nov. 24, 2010 Player25 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Bob Winchell The softball community lost a dear friend and long time supporter today. Bob Winchell was the Sponsor/manager for the Winchell Clinic teams that played in the 35,40, and 45 age brackets. Many of the players I have met in senior softball talk about the games between their teams and the Winchell teams from the mid 90's and early 2000. The Winchell teams had some great games with Capitol X-ray, Sun Devils, Marodies(sp), and many others. In addition, Bob also sponsored open teams which also had great success. Bob was a chiropractor and treated many players on both his teams and others. He was always willing to help where he could. The greatest accolade that I can give to anyone, is to call them friend. Bob was a true friend. |
| Nov. 7, 2010 Player25 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Question 4 Major Plus teams?? Our team plays major plus. I for one am tired of spending time and dollars to play the same several teams. The only time we see more teams is going west. Have not seen the final stats for this year but if it remains as in years past, our team averages about 2 hrs/game. When playing with a 10 homerun limit, we have the possibility of 8 balls that we can not defense. At best this could be 8 runs. At worst it could be 32. Our team was set up years ago to play major when the rules were 3 hrs and then outs. The team was set up with speed, defense and base hitting. With the better equipment, much of the speed and defensive aspects have been removed from the game. I personally would like to get back to a more balanced game. My guess is many are saying just change the composition of your team. And that could be a possibility if you could find personnel in your region who: a) meet the criteria, b) would leave the team they currently play on, c) the players picked up would maintain the "chemistry" of the current team, d) the current team wanted to discontinue playing with long time friends. Our team does work hard during the off season to maintain our abilities and conditioning. But we want to continue to play together. We have some success in the region we typically play, but when going west, we typically have not faired well in major-plus. As for radical ideas: a) player who hits hr must run the bases.( yes takes time but equalizes the effort for the base hitter who has to run the bases) b) limit the number of courtesy runners to 1 or 2 per inning (limit the players with power who can not or do not want to run) c) allow teams to get moved only as high as major. Those that want to play major + will elect to play there (it is easier to find major talent players) I for one love the game and will continue to play but would love to see the game move back to a more balanced game. Do they come both balanced and endloaded? Do they swing, feel like the UII or the Combat? Is the distance comparable to the UII and Combat? Are they durable? Considering getting one of the above for batting practice but would like it to swing, feel close to the Combat I use in the games. The Boombah is around $100. Don't know about the Bass. Thanks |
| Oct. 30, 2010 Player25 | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: rules of the game Have also played unlimited arc. I would only suggest that with unlimited arc, the mat be eliminated. Using the mat with unlimited arc would allow the ball to be thrown such that it would be unhittable. For instance, a 20 ft high pitch hitting the back of the mat. IMO it would bring more judgement by the ump into the game. The higher the arc the closer to the plate the ball would need to hit for it to pass through the strike zone. I also believe there would be more balls going through the middle as batters tommyhawk the high pitch. It appears batters that tommyhawk high pitches do not have as much control. Just my opinion. |

If the call is "out", what would be the basis of the call. Understood the explanation but if the call is out, I would suppose it had to do with the rules of "altered or illegal". If so, would the suspension for "altered or illegal" be imposed? |

If a bat was used in a senior softball tourney with the wrapper still on the bat, would the bat be considered illegal, altered, etc? What would be the effect of leaving the plastic on the bat? | Aug. 31, 2010 Player25 | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: LVSSA in Las Vegas Interesting comment about everyone can go yard. Let check the conditions: Wind blowing dead out to left at say 20-30 mph, using a mct ball, senior bats. Guessing just about anyone could hit it out under those conditions. I did not see any team hit 8-9 hrs in the first two innings. I know our team only hit 12 hrs in a game once in the tourney if with the above conditions. As to the tourney, I thought it was poorly ran, the games were 1-2 hours off schedule (can not allow 1.5 hours per game if games are 70 minute time limit with 9 runs per inning and the open inning), umpires with a few exceptions were terrible. One could not even get the "flip" correct and walked off the field. Another had the wrong homerun count for a team. Did not know the rules, etc. As to cold water in the dugouts, if you had to play a late game, there was no water. However, an official(unknown name) did allow us to buy bottled water and reimburse a team. For me personally, I would rather never play in the LVSSA again. Over the years it has been poorly run. However, it was the most teams we have had in our bracket all year. |
| June 1, 2010 Player25 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: 52 x 275 ball I would disagree with hitting the center of the ball is the best way to hit. The reason is simple: if you hit the center of the ball it will knuckle. Knuckle balls do not travel as for as a ball that is "spun". Therefore must batters are trying to "spin" the ball. Some are trying to hit "top spin" and others are hitting "under spin". Both are hitting close to the center but are either a little above or below. Do not see where hitting the 52 cor would be different than hitting the 44 cor. Let's face facts, we are getting older and our strength, eye hand coordination, speed, health, etc. is declining regardless of how much we continue to work on skills and strength. Why should we expect to do things in our 50's and above that we could not do in our younger years??? The question that continually crosses my mind when reading the message board: Are our egos so big and fragile that we must oppose nature to still enjoy the game we have played for many years?? If I never hit another homerun I would still play for the friendship and competition. |
| June 1, 2010 Player25 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Should a bat be confiscated First let me state that I am all for safety, but having any rule/penalty after an event has occurred does nothing for safety. It appears many of the suggestions on this board are driven by the need to keep the outrageous bat/ball combination currently in use in senior softball. It was amazing to me to experience the size of the ego's of many of the senior players. I understood the ego mania in my younger years. I for one am grateful to still be able to play softball. Maybe I am in the minority but I play for a lot of reasons besides just hitting homeruns. The friendships, the competition, the locations of tourneys are just a few reasons. They are much more important than hitting balls 400' or more. I for one would like to go back to a more balanced game where things like defense, speed, ability, intelligence, etc. actually mean something. Our team plays major + but it was formed originally to play major. We had success at major and now play major +. There are several problems with the current system. Having success at major gets you moved to major +. In our case we do not have players available in our area that can hit a homerun on demand. We may average 3-5 homeruns a game when most major + teams we play against hit close to 10 per game. This alone puts our team at a disadvantage. I would propose major to be the highest level for automatic "move" ups. The teams that want to play major + would elect to play in that category. They could have any rules that they want. The other brackets would play under similar rules as today.(home run limits, runs per inning, etc.) The brackets beside major +, would reduce the liviness of the bat/ball combo so as to bring back a more balanced game. The major + teams would be able to recruit from all over the US. The other brackets would be limited by the current boundaries. This would give all players the ability to chose where they play and the bat/ball combo they want. There would not be a need to make further changes to the game. Let's go back to the balanced game of yester-year and park our ego's at the gate. |
| April 20, 2010 Player25 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: To screen or not to screen... Would I quit playing? NO. However, would want to see the rules before deciding whether to support the rule. If the pitcher can still step to the side to field or reach outside the area of the screen, then I would be opposed. Reason, the screen would act as defense and the pitcher could defend a larger area than current. As to the 52/275 ball, this is very similar to the T4000 of old(so I have been told). My guess is that most seniors(being pretty inventive) would go back to hitting a stiffer, less responsive bat. Thus esentially having a combo that was banned years ago. |

It brings defense more into the game. I believe it makes for a better game. It also reduces the number of players who hit home runs. I am not a fan of the 3 to 10 pitch height or the 1-1 count. |
