Discussion: Senior Tournament

Good tournament and good fields. It offers the opportunity to play teams that you will be seeing in the Nationals and Worlds. Better competitions gives all of us a better chance to beat those boys in the South and West when it counts.

to the player and teams that spend their own money to play in your tournaments. It is time that more concern should be given to our needs. We just came back from a small but well run tourn. in Novi, Mich. directed by Mike Dembicki. He gave all teams what they wanted. All classifications played together and it went off extremely well and we made several friends. In a few qualifiers that my team has played in so far this year here is what I observed:
* The UII bat did NOT create any injuries.
* The upcoming senior player is bigger and stronger
* The "no time limit" in round robin did NOT add any delays to the tourn.
* The 11 th. def. player + five run spot made the game competitive and interesting when a lower played higherr Class.
* good Optic yellow balls were used
Now, here is what I think that all senior organizations need to do:
*Step away from your parent organization(ex. ASA) and have the balls to allow us to use ALL bats with the exception of the U I.
* Impliment HR's for all divisions, with the one up rule and all others being singles.
8 Use the optic yellow, good core ball.(And that goes for the ISSA,ISF)
*Impliment the 11th. defense. player and run differential when playing two classes up(Qualifiers).
* Make All tourn. 3 game round robin with double elim.(Listen Winter Worlds SSUSA and RB, ISSA).
* A unified ID card.
I would like to entertain any other ideas. Again, it is OUR money and OUR time so shouldn't these organizations cater to our requests ??!! LA

Discussion: Indy Tournament

These early bird tournaments that we have here up NORTH are usually the first time that organized teams are together. We purposely took "visitors" each time so that we could get more swings and for me, as coach, to be able to see more hitters. The one game, I had promised that everyone was going to hit and then they put in the "flip-flop" and left me with an apology for those players. I wish that more tourn. directors would take into the consideration of money and time spent to go to these tournaments. Everytime I turn around, we seem to be getting less for our money. Whether it be on the games or just the money we have to spend for the multitude of bats that we have to carry for each sanctioning. Incidentally in Indianapolis, the U II's were allowed. One field was turf. In our games and the others that I had observed, I did not seen any injuries relating to the bat or balls. If any balls were hit up the middle, I saw that many times the hitter apologized to the pitcher. Senior ball players are a class act. It was nice to again see the excitement of home runs. Even though in our divisions, they were only doubles, it brought life and excitement back to the game. I was one of many that feel that you should never be penalized for hitting a HR. I feel that at the AA and AAA divisions, HR's should be allowed and counted as doubles after so many and in the AA, allow one HR and the rest could be singles with advancing the runner only one base. We must wonder if rules are starting to get antiquated for the new younger 50's that are coming up. Anyway, good INDY tourn. but next year for the money, please give us better weather. Dayton Legends.

Discussion: 3N2

I have been purchasing our team shoes from 3N2 since the inception of their company. They are going to be a huge competitor in the years to come. I have ordered over 37 pairs for the teams (Silver Legends & Dayton Legends) that I have coached for over the last two years and never has there been a defect. If you have a issues, you can speak directty with the officers and they always stand behing their word. If you have any questions, leave me your email or phone number and I will be more than happy assist you. I and some of my teammates have literally taken off our 3N2's to let others wear them for a game. They were always sold. You better buy them soon because if the Softball organizations get word that they are popular, they might put a ban on them??!!! (Ha)

Discussion: Player Cards

I was in phone convesation last night with the nice lady who currently runs the NASCS(SSWS). She was trying to justify the importance of the fee for player cards necessary for the success of their tournaments. If they are so important to their success, then will someone please tell me how the ISSA, ISSF, NSA, ASA, LVSSA,USSSA mangage wtihout the usage fee from the cards !!!?? All of my years of playing senior softball, I am still puzzled over this issue. Do some of these organizations really care about the individual player's interests?? I personally don't know, but I would like to hear your takes on this issue...........LA

Discussion: 70' bases?

We play early bird tourns here up North with the youngins and NSA uses the 70' bases. If you like low scoring and quick games, then this would be for you. After seeing this happenings to the young guys, I could just imagine with us Seniors. I don't think it would be such a good idea.

Discussion: One Bat !!!??

Am I being to optimistic in asking if there is just ONE bat, with pop, that complies with SSUSA, ISA, ISSF, NSA, ASA, SPA ??!! And if I am dreaming, I may as well ask for an end load effect. This will be my 7th. year in senior ball and I am tired of pulling my back muslces lugging over a $1000.00 of bats in my bag. Thanks for any of your expertise. Larry.

Discussion: Dayton in need of a few good players

Many of our players over the past few years have moved on up to the 55's therefore, we would like to have a few to fill their spots in the 50AA's. Remember that you can be from the bordering states with Ohio.

Discussion: Ken Maas

Ken Maas was to Senior Softball as Henry Ford was to the automobile. No matter how busy of a schedule that he and his wife had, they always had to time to talk with you about softball. His tournaments were always well run and the worlds were presented in a format that truly the best teams were to win. Only our obsession to win created a mockery of his events by "sandbagging" to move down a division or two and having the destinctions of winning an award that we truly knew was underserving.

I think that there would be no better tribute to Ken Mass then to have an annual memorial tournament in his name and for all of us to take the time and effort to load up this message boards with salutations for his wife and family to see how great of a human being this man was; not only as a softball mentor but as a great human being. I know I will miss him dearly. May God Bless him and his wonderful family. On behalf of the entire Silver Legends team..........Larry.

Discussion: SSWC Worlds in Las Vegas:

Many thanks to Terry, Fran and the other SSUSA reps. IT was nice to put a face with the telephone voices. Overall, I think that the 34 team 50AAA's went off very well. You are going to have a few problems but I think that this was one of the best tourn. that I have played in Senior softball. Terry and his staff took special efforts to set up the brackets so that we were playing opposite coast teams. I did notice some slight difference in play. What was funny is that if you talked to the west coast teams, they complimented about how much better the east coast teams were and if you talked to the east coast teams, they complimented the play of the west. But when it was all said and done, in the final six, there were three of us east coast teams and three of the west coast teams. I do think that the heat got to us a little quicker than the west teams. I had only one slight complaint and that was in the umpiring. Our team was unfortunate to have a 17 1/2 hour day on sat. and so did the umpires. some mistakes were made because of their tiredness. Also, the umpires were very respectful and accommodating but several did not know the senior softball rules. The directors were there to make the changes and they appropriately did right on the spot. I believe that more senior softball training needs to go into these ISA umps. Also, we never knew if there were going to be two umps on our game or one. One of our umps said that his partner just didn't get up in time !! Overall it was a great experience, met new friends, and enjoyed our old acquaintenances. Thanks again to Terry and his staff and if we go back to Vegas I hope that Terry has an in with the casinos to losen up their slots...........Larry 50AAA Silver Legends.

Give me your email address and I will get you in contact with the regional sales manager. Our team has been wearing them for over two years with no complaints. Not a bad price for a custom made shoe. Larry - Silver Legends.

Discussion: Coaching Senior Softball

Very well said. Except you could continue to discuss about how it affected your personal life; how much of your own monies you had to spend; how you sacrificed your own playing abilities by emphasizing your team first and we could go on and on. Maybe more should be instilled on recruiting a good coach instead of a super egomaniac player. So often many of the players carry frustrations from their pasts and really don't understand the true meaning of Senior softball. How long do we keep our trophies before they are trashed; but then again, how long can we keep the true frienships??!! It is truly sad to see that the majority of players miss the entire picture. Not to put a feather in our caps but I know that we have won many of nationals and worlds. Just alone, I have coached a team to 6 worlds and nationals over the past 15 months and now that we are losing a few games and tourns., the players now know more about coaching then us. If you are willing to put a team together next year of no one but coaches, count me in and I promise you no complaints. I will just savor the new friendships !!! You did a fine job and believe me it did not go unnoticed from this opposing coach as well as many others. Again, for you players, without good coaching and organization, where would you be at age 50+ ??

The Computer Solutions are a good bunch of guys. Any of the thirteen teams could win this tournament on their given day. As you know with any tourn., to win you need the skill along with some luck.Good balls and umpires would help too. We are looking forward to play some of the new teams with the possibility of making new friends. The last time some of us played against the Indiana Classics, was down in Panama City. Good bunch of class act guys, also. All have a safe trip to Manassas and see ya on the playing fields. Good luck. Larry - Silver Legends.

My observation as well. On several of the U 2's, I have seen them crack very easily, the closer they were hit to the shaft of the bat. Larry.
