Discussion: Phoenix 50 Major

The only reason I'm responding here is because I feel strongly to what Mike said. I know him...have played against him and he's always been a gentleman. I can tell you that playing with and against men like him just sweetens the sport.

I was playing in a rec league game, Monday. Our pitcher got hit by a kid who had no idea what he was doing at the plate. He couldn't go middle intentionally anytime. After that hit, one of the guys in my dugout looked at me and said, "I guess it's time to go middle..." I said, "Why? he didn't do it on purpose and besides that if you're gonna retaliate...don't broadcast it. I won't go headhunting...period." BTW-This is a Church League...

While mistakes happen, I agree with Mike....you shouldn't try to hurt people regardless of the situation.....as difficult as that may be.

Good day to all...

Hit2: easy, now...I'm not 50 yet and I've never shaved a bat...ever! I have that arguement with my kids...21 & 23.They are very good players, but they have the attitude that if you don't shave you don't compete. I told them that if you don't learn how to hit, you won't compete. If you can't hit with a stock bat, out of the wrapper then you ain't worth much. They didn't like that.

Santo: Only thing I never saw mentioned was setting up a video camera and filming yourself. I have done that. Believe me it works. Macenkos routine is great as is DeMarinis. Whiffle bat, game bat, weighted bat. Good workout routine...you'll be just fine.

Discussion: ULTRA II OR COMBAT

Well, Mad Dog...that 'cheater' Lecak, played for me for 2 years. I'd take him back in a heartbeat! Great hitter and a great individual.

Crusader: Yeah, I've broken 2 Ultra II's. They aren't what you should use for BP. I'll see what this 510L does for me...then probably the Combat.

Cold weather bat...Worth PST...guaranteed to 45 degrees for 2 years...best around.

Take care all.

Discussion: ULTRA II OR COMBAT

I swing the Ultra II and the Worth 510 Launch. I pay $180 for those bats @ Bats Unlimited here in SoCal. That seems to be a par price w/ no warranty. My buddy Lecak swings the new Macenko Combat. He loves it. Balls jump off for sure. If this 510 doesn't do it for me, I'll get a Combat.

I know for sure that you can't go wrong with the Ultra II.

I personally like the time schedule that SSUSA has. I find that we rarely have to wait for a game time. I also like the HR rules in place, though I'd like to see different run per inning rules in the 40's, say 7 per in M+, 5 in M. 12-14 Hr's in M+...8 in M. I would not take the Ultra's away for the simple fact that they're part of the draw for the association.

I agree with the middle rule...even though there are alot of guys that think they can protect themselves without fail or won't get hurt. If I was pitching, you can believe I'd wear a mask and armour. All you have to do is lose concentration for a second...hope your AARP card is intact!

Discussion: Pitcher Protection Rule

The rule, as written, is flawed in my view. If the rule included the phrase, "batted line drive ball," that might be better. As it reads now, it leaves to much open for suggestion.

Now, as for only being able to go up the middle, I was taught the same as you all...square up the ball, send it back where it came from. Thing is, if you can do that, then you should be able to hit the ball anywhere you need to depending on the situation...and my guess is we're all better hitters now than we ever were when we were kids.

Trust me guys, we'll get that rule repaired.

Turn2: Based on the way you've explained it, no. The umpire made a booboo. What I wrote was straight from the schedule. Again, as I'm sure you understand, it's always the umpires judgement...just like the ASA or USSSA Strikezone....that's why SSUSA uses the plate & mat.

Like I said earlier, SSUSA is committed to providing the best situation for everyone involved. This rule is fairly new and seems to have a few flaws. I'm sure it will be worked and re-worked until the best effect is realized.

I will be studying this as well. I will certainly appreciate all costructive input.

Discussion: Pitcher Protection Rule

If you would all, please, look at the question asked by turn2: "Is the batter out if he hits a line drive at the pitcher and it hits him in the arm?"

The question was answered the best way I could based on the info provided. If there is another written rule regarding the pitchers protection, I'd like to see it.

This is my interpretation of the rule: If the ball hits the pitcher as a linedrive and the pitcher simply reacts in defense...no attempted play, then the batter is out. If the ball hits the ground first, it's live. It is the judgement of the umpire. It does happen fast.

I appreciate the opinions given here because it will only help to make a steadfast rule that everyone will understand and leave no chance for judgement.

Discussion: Pitcher Protection Rule

Turn2;

This is the way the rule reads: "Any batted ball striking the pitcher while in the pitcher's box (except the arms while in the process of making a reasonable defensive play on the ball) shall be a dead ball out."

So, this is the question: Was the pitcher attempting to make a play? If so, then the ball is live...if not, then the ball is dead and the batter is out.

Hope this helps.

Well, taits, you don't know me and I don't know you. I manage Old School Master's. I'm not sure which team you have or play for, but you make it a point to look me up. I'll be at the Spring Nationals.

I think you'll find once you talk to me face to face that I tell it like I see it and speak what I believe. No other motives here other than to make the 40+ division stronger. Anyone that knows me will vouch I'm sure.

With that, I wish you and your team lots of luck in Phoenix.

Ken,

To answer your question, no...40+ teams do not have to qualify their rosters. The only roster check now is for Major List players. Any 40+ team who wishes to participate in the SSUSA Worlds Tournament need not play in any other SSUSA Qualifier to be eligible.

Govacho: Thanks. If I hadn't dislocated this shoulder 2 weeks ago...oh well.

Taits: I'm not sure what your reply means...and I hate to assume....but if you are saying that what happens in this division is all my decision, it is not. I simply help SSUSA organize the 40+ division. I do give suggestions and I may do some canvassing. I can assure you that the buck does not stop here.

Good day to all.

I know of no Banned Bat List for SSUSA.

The only 2 you can't swing: Ultra I and the Rip It Elite.

That's been my understanding and hope someone will correct me if I'm mistaken.

Discussion: 40 major+

Terry probably won't reply to this...he is pretty busy right now...so, I will.

The major change to the 40+ division is, if you have any players on your SSUSA roster that are currently on the ASA or USSSA Major Players List, then regardless of how you do in the seeding games, you will automatically go to the Major+ bracket.

In this year's case, as of right now, there are 15 teams in the 40+ division. 7 teams will play 40 Major+, 8 will play 40 AAA. The teams with Major listed players will go to the Major + side AFTER SEEDING. If there are lets say 2 teams that have Major Listed Players, those 2 go first, then the next 5 top finishing teams will go. The rest will play AAA. If there are 7 teams with Major Listed Players, then they all go to the Major side...the rest go to AAA.

This is the fairest way Terry could handle this. The 40 division has always been open. In ASA & USSSA, it still is. Instead of looking at this as a negative, I think this will help bring more 40+ teams to the SSUSA organization.

Headbully made his decision. That's his right. I think Terry made the best decision he could in this case.

If you have a legitimate complaint, you should identify yourself. This makes issues alot easier to address.

Discussion: Is the state of US economy going to impact your travel plans next year

I agree that the state of the economy will have an effect on what my team will do in 2009.

One answer is to promote more local tournaments in the area you live. I'm in SoCal, so it might be easier for us to get local or very short travel tourneys for our age group. I understand that if you're in central TX you might not have it as easy.

This is not unlike anything else we do...we will all be watching the economy, our investments and our pocketbooks.
