Discussion: Ridge Hooks comment

I am an old u-trip guy as is Ridge. My only dealings with him were at the National Conventions. Having said this, from what I experienced Ridge is honest, hard working, sincere in his love of the game and his love of people, enthusiastic and actually listens to people. Oh, I forgot, well organized and works with a smile.

Discussion: '09 ISA/SSUSA Convention ... my insight or lack of.

Taits,
We are talking about two different events here. You received an ivitation to a joint convention being held by SS-USA (Senior Softball) and ISA (Independent Softball Assn.). These Associations are "Sister" organizations to use a term. ISA is a "full service" softball association covering slowpitch adult, youth fastpitch, seniors etc. That's why many subjects are covered. As far as being worried about the open meetings go; don't worry there will be plenty of smaller group meetings where you may express your concerns and in most cases these group or committee meetings will report to the floor at the open meetings.
This convention is not the "Senior Summit".

Discussion: Nice going, SSUSA Staff

Guys, With the exception of major events Western, Eastern Championships for example and various TOC events. The "crew" for Sacramento; Terry, Fran, Dave et al don't travel and run/report on the 'regular' qualifiers such as Rhode Island this weekend that' why the scores and winners are not available quickly. It is up to the tournament director to report the scores. I feel that this message is a great tool to promote events and those of us (including myself) are missing the boat by not reporting on this board in a quick manner. It's informative to everyone; that makes it a great selling/promotional tool for our tournaments & IT's FREE!
Not meant as a criticism to any one; just an observation from one who's 'been there/done that'.

Discussion: Why is there a difference?

Could the number of teams entered in the north be greater or perhaps the number fields available be less. Both would have an effect on the time it takes to play the event.

Discussion: Should Umpires Be More Aggresive to inventory Bats before the game

YES.....just because a bat 1.20 stamped on it does not by itself make the bat legal.....dents, shaved, loaded etc.

Discussion: You Make the call

Seems like a strange rule interpretation to me. I would think that this mat (homeplate) would be considered a moveable base. As a moveable base the catcher even though not in contact w/base had the ball prior to the runner reaching his base (scoring plate) I would think the call would be out. I don't know the SS-USA's rules on moveable bags, but usually players are told to go where the belongs. I hope the rule is consistant for all four bases.
Now to answer your question: it appears the correct call was made.

Discussion: pitcher protection rule new definition

If the player protection rule is here to stay I would like to see a fifth infielder added to play, say, ten feet either side of second base. I think this would stop batters from intentionally going up the middle.
Now, let's be really contraversial. Since home runs seem to so important why not get rid of the high performance equqipment and move the fences IN to 275 feet. Then there would still be plenty of home runs, but far less need of a player protection rule.
Players hitting home runs at 50 who never hit them at 30?!.....Guys you're not hitting the ball over the fence the equipment is.

Discussion: Womens teams in the Northeast (or any where)

This past weekend we had two womens teams (40+) that played against each other as part of the Bay State Senior Shootout. Next season we would like to have three (or more) womens teams playing in this event. At least one of the two teams is planning on going to Phoenix this October.
If any team is interested in coming to west central Massachusetts next July please consider this an open invitation.
Thanks......Tom Marum, New England C&L Director SS-USA

Discussion: Thank you from the Bay State Shootout

To each player, coach, manager, and sponsor; thank you for making the first Bay State Senior Shootout a success. We didn't have a lot of teams. We didn't good weather. I do hope we had a good time. Afterall, it is you the players, coaches, managers, and sponsors that make the game of softball work. The game belongs to you; without you there would be no Bay State Shootout (or any other event).
There was good softball in all divisions. Most games were close. We even had two women's teams which we believe is the first time women's teams have perticipated in a qualifier in the Northeast.
A special thanks to Gerry and rest of the grounds crew for getting the fields not just playable, but in pretty darn good shape after the 3.25 inches of rain we had Thursday night to Friday morning. We lost only two hours of time and no games! Once again good job!
Hope to see you next season.

Discussion: Bath Tub Billy's 55's Win Bay State Shootout Fails To Ride Pony!

Congrats are in order to Bath Tub Billys 55's for capturing the Bay State Shootout. However, a couple of their players failed to follow tradition by not riding the rocking horse after striking out!! Shame, shame!! We will not forget. We hope to see you next year & before the team takes the field those two culprits will be expected to fufill their obligation & ride the pony!!
Thanks again to all who played.

Discussion: Bay State Shootout Update

We have some discouraging news to report on this event. I received a call last night (Tuesday) informing me that the Barracudas 60's from NY will not be participating on this Saturday and Sunday. Thus being the case, there are bracket and time changes for not only the 60's but also the 55's. With the exception of the Bombers 60's, all first and second round games have remained the same time and opponent.
I just want to give everyone a heads up.
