I agree with your ruling. Dave - can you also give me your ruling?

Runner on 1st. Ground ball to 2nd baseman who flips ball to shortstop for first out. Shortstop then attempts to complete double play and hits runner from coming from first in the shoulder who is about 20 feet from 2nd. Runner makes no attempt to get out of the way but also never raises his hands or in any other way interferes with throw. Double play? Play on?

Discussion: Batting Order Advice

In the big SSUSA tournaments you will play anywhere from 5 to 15 games depending on the size of your bracket. We would bat everyone during seeding games and then rotate (in your case 14 players) the bottom 6. Rotate the guys that sit every game. We would probably bat 12 and sit 4 each game. The bottom 6 in this case would play 2 out of every 3 games. Even if you only played 5 games in given tournament your top 8 would play in all 5 games and each of your bottom 6 would play in 4 games. The other option is to bat 11 and rotate bottom 6 every other game.

Tim - I totally agree! I think we have the reincarnation of Einstein on the message board. If you've been following the messages for any length of time you know what I’m talking about and remember what happened to him.

Discussion: Mark Fry

Mark also played for our team, North State Screenprint, for the last few years. He’s a good player that would help any team. He runs well, has a good arm, and can hit for a high average. He drives the ball well and is just an all around good guy. Our team folded this year and he would be a benefit to any team that picks him up. Also, he shows up when he says he’ll be there.

Discussion: Infield fly rule......

The funny thing is I didn’t even realize the ball had rolled foul as I was out in the middle of the infield keeping an eye on the baserunners and what they were doing. Someone pulled me aside and asked me if I realized that the ball had rolled foul. No one knew any better and we just moved on.

About 10 years ago I was umpiring a game in our Masters Division which for the most part are guys 70 and older. Runners on first and second, 1 out, pop up in between 3rd baseman playing about 15 feet behind the bag and the bag. I call infield fly if fair. The 3rd base man is really slow and does not get to ball. I now am watching runners as all hell is breaking out. Unknown to me is that the ball had lots of backspin on it and rolled back foul between 3rd and home. I kept the out call and no one complained about call. Now, after all these comments on the message board, I’m wondering if I should have changed my call to a foul ball.

Dave - Can a 75 year old team have guys under that age on their roster? Where do I find that information?

I forgot to add a couple of things about the Western Village. It has a casino and restaurants that are all decent.

We used to always stay at Western Village in Sparks. They have upgraded all the rooms and have a huge parking area. You don’t have to struggle with downtown Reno traffic and you can get to Golden Eagle much quicker then anywhere downtown. The best part of Western Village is they have a lake right out the backdoor with a beautiful paved path around the entire thing. Now that we have an RV we stay at Sparks Marina RV Park which is just behind the Western Village. Rates at Western Village are as good or better then downtown.

In the past the 65’s - 85’s have not played in Carson City. Do you anticipate the same this year?

Discussion: impact player

The only organization that I have ever played in is SSUSA. Many years ago we were a AAA team and we tried to add a player. SSUSA said we could not do so as the player was classified as an Impact Player and could only play Major or Major +. They did not say that a Major + player could only play Major + or Major, they said he could not play with us because he was an Impact Player. And because of that he could not play with us. I understand what the rules are for Major + players but the term they used many years ago was Impact Player.

Grayhitter - Actually, years ago SSUSA did use the term “Impact Player”. If I am not mistaken, it referred to those players that were Hall of Famers and there were restrictions put on them as to what level they could or could not play.

Click on ratings above. Then click on ratings guidelines. Instructions are fairly easy to follow. There is much more to it then just wanting to be re-classified. Good luck!

Discussion: 1 and 1 curiosity

A few facts:

NCSSA - 96 teams X 22 players per team = 2112 player
SSUSA - 1851 teams X 22 players per team = 40,722 players

SSUSA has approximately 20 times as many players. They have done reserve nationally and it was determined that not only did the majority of the over 40,000 players want to use a 1 and 1 count, but they found they played way more 7 inning games. They didn’t bend to a very small minority of board members that claim that there was no evidence to support that using a1 and 1 count did NOT save time.

Again, I feel that if all managers were given the opportunity to vote on this issue they would find the same outcome as SSUSA. I know - just come to the annual meeting and vote. That is a huge inconvenience for many and the vote could easily be done via email.

Discussion: 1 and 1 curiosity

Getting to the meeting isn't easy for everyone. Why not let all managers vote via email. That would get most everyone represented. This is the 19 century and we should be able to accommodate more people. Items to be discussed could be sent to the board ahead of time and then voting could take place. As much as I love NCSSA it’s decisions are dominated by only a few of the board members. This also happens with scheduling of tournaments. I guess as you get older, I’ll be 70 next month, youget pretty stubborn and set it your ways.
