Discussion: Recent Palm Springs Tournament - One & One Count with one to waste.

We play mostly SSUSA and are a 70 Major Team. We played approximately 60 tournament games last year and only had a few not go the distance of 7 innings. This included a game with a 33 - 26 score.
You can get the full 7 innings in if you get in and out of the field between innings, and have courtesy runners ready to go.
If you waste even 1 minute between inning changes (per team) that comes to 12 wasted minutes in 6 innings. If a courtesy runner takes an extra 30 seconds or so to run from the dugout (if he is ready to go), the other runner run back, that will take at least another 5 minutes over the total game. That could amount to 17 wasted minutes per game. I don't know how many times teams don't have a runner ready to go in.
I believe a 1 - 1 count speeds it up somewhat but you have to look at the whole picture. A 1 - 1 count with an extra foul ball is only saving a little time per batter, even though it makes them swing at pitches earlier in the count.
I hate to see the game changed any more than it has been.

Discussion: Cheyenne Park

We at the Scrap Iron organization strongly support LVSSA/SSUSA but when playing in a World Tournament with over a $700 entry fee and fields in this condition it is quite upsetting to say the least.
We travel hundreds of miles with our families to this tournament. With a burned out restroom and concession stand our spectators (and us) have to use porta johns with no refreshments.
If the fields have not been improved since last year they also need work. The turf was bad and there were holes all over the outfield.
Hopefully the staff can do something about this and I am sure they will try.

70 Majors are scheduled at Cheyenne Park for the LVSSA/SSUSA World tournament. Last spring we were there and the concession stand and restrooms were fenced off and the fields were in pretty poor condition.
Does anyone know if this has been remedied?

Discussion: Safe or Out at home

I'm a board member of the Colorado Senior Softball Association and we ran into a problem at our year end tournament with the SSUSA rules. It involves the scoring line/plate and maybe Dave or SSUSA can help us with this so we may clarify it in the future. We have an upcoming board meeting and this will help.
Here is the SSUSA rule:

Page 52 SSUSA Rule Book:
8.10 Scoring Line and Scoring Plate
A base runner’s foot down on or down past the scoring line or down on the scoring plate prior to the ball being received by a defensive player touching the strike mat results in the scoring of a run

There was a runner coming in to score and he fell down before crossing the line with his foot. He reached across with his hand and had it down before the ball reached the defensive player at home.
He was called out because his "foot" was not down on or past the scoring line (although his hand was) before the defensive player had the ball and touched the plate.

In regular baseball/softball the base (line) must be touched, but in our rules the foot must be down.

Can you help us with this?

Scrappy,
Mike Massong

We have had some teams inquire as to who will be attending in the 70 Major bracket. We will be there for sure - Scrap Iron 3N2 70 Major.
Who else will join us? Great venue, and a well run tournament. Step up and join us for some great competition.

Discussion: Scrap Iron loss of a great player and person

This past Easter Sunday the Scrap Iron family lost a great player and person in Darrell "Skip" Walker. Skip had been battling Pancreatic Cancer for the past year. He is one of the finest Outfielders I have ever played with, or coached. A true five tool player he played at the Major and Major Plus level.
The kind of guy that never complained, but just went out and did his job.

His last tournament was last year in Phoenix and he played with our Scrap Iron 3n2 70 Major team. After a few games he approached me and stated that he could not go back out to the outfield as the chemo and radiation he had been undergoing had drained him. He did not want to hurt his teams chance of winning.
Skip did not sit on the bench. He went out every inning and coached 3rd base. He did everything he could do to help his team win.

This is the way Skip played softball, and the way he lived his life.
Skip played on World Championship teams with Scrap Iron, won many MVP awards, and is now on the All Tourney team in heaven.
God Bless Skip and his family.

Discussion: PITCHING SCREEN USE

In Colorado we are discussing using a pitchers screen in our over 70 leagues Only. We will be discussing this at an open meeting and we are looking at input from those who have used them.
I have listed some of the concerns that have been brought up. Please add your input or experience with using a screen.

Placement of the screen.
Size of screen.
It eliminates double plays hit back to the pitcher as it is a dead ball
infield fly rule: if ball comes down and hits screen
a thrown ball that hits the screen by a third baseman or other infielders
plays at the plate where ball coming in from outfield hits the screen
double plays where ball goes to 2nd and then goes to home for the force from 3rd

Please note this is for an over 70 league only.

Discussion: Bat prices

Miken Ultra II MSU2 can be purchased at a number of places for $189 and they ship it to you. Shop around.
You can always order from some fly by night operation and get it really cheap. Maybe you will get your bat, and maybe not.
Recently some players sent in money for a bat from a rip off company and never got their bat. Deal with a reputable company.

Discussion: COLORADO MAJOR TEAM LOOKING FOR PLAYERS

We are a Colorado team "Scrap Iron Phiten 65's" that have moved up to the 70 year old Major Classification. We had a couple of players that cannot play and we now need to fill their spots.
Looking for middle infielder and another infielder/outfielder or pitcher.
Must be good AAA, Major, or Major Plus and adjacent to Colorado. We are always a contender in tournaments and have won 2 World Championships in the past 5 years.

Discussion: Tournament Results

Here is an idea! When you win a tournament why doesn't the winning team post it on the message board? Everyone will see who won it the day after the tournament and Dave will get the scores to us as soon as possible.
I'll start:
Western Championships: 65 Major
1. Scrap Iron Phiten
2. Enviro-Vac Marauders
3. Stixx

Anyone else?

Discussion: Why Not Reward Performance?

Don, I agree 100%. I have played in tournaments for over 40 years and the Senior Softball tournnaments are the only ones that have not awarded the winners bracket team the home field choice. We just won the 65 AAA in Vegas and were the visitors in the Championship game. We won it, but still should have been given the choice to be home team. The other thing that needs to be looked at is the automatic seeding for the East and West coast champions.
