| Nov. 14, 2011 Swampy | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Safety Questions Another can to open that will let the worms out is the idea of runners wearing helmets. This weekend in Ft. Myers, runner on first was struck by a hard line drive from left hand power hitter. From the outfield, it looked like he was struck squarely on the head, but only by the shear length of less than an inch, the ball knocked his glasses off, causing an inch slice on his eyelid. The close call once again gave notice how quickly lives can change. I am not a proponent of runners wearing helmets, but I would not fault anyone that may not feel safe or comfortable when running, pitching, or playing the field to use any equipment that would permit them to play the game they enjoy. I know the guy loves the game, after applying a butterfly bandaid, he was back out on defense, but stated he was running to second after his next at bat, no matter where he hit the ball! Be safe! |

| Oct. 14, 2011 Swampy | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: 50 Major+ Worlds...OKI Standing in the outfield and watching ball after ball go over the fence is not all that exciting! 9 runs an inning does not allow for anything more than a 4 or 5 inning game. Unlimited homeruns will not excite many, if any teams to want to play Major+. Other issues, such as using senior bats, rocket balls, on cement type infields and on 300'fences deminishes the defense, other than the balls hit right at the infield or a mishit fly ball to the outfield. It would be interesting to move a Major+ game to a high school field and compare the numbers. I agree with posts above and many of you guys have played longer than I and have juggled ideas to make it better. |
| Oct. 13, 2011 Swampy | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: 50 Major+ Worlds...OKI The 7 teams not only speaks for the state of Major Plus, but also for the Major division. Stick said there were 31 Major teams entered in Phoenix. I would have to think out of the 31 teams, there are more than a few that could hang with the rated Major Plus teams but refuse to give it a shot! If there are tournaments where equalizers are necessary, I do like Jawoods idea of making them earn it. Sad, but 7 teams in the tournament does represent a high percentage of participation from the Major Plus division. |

Maybe Not The simple solution would be to combine the two divisions, which would make for more competition. There would probably be teams scrambling to get to AAA or wanting to know what teams are coming to the tournament prior to them making the decision to come. There are the teams that don't care who they play and welcome the challenge, and you have the ones that don't want to play anyone and whine because they wouldn't get their 5 runs or the 11th defensive player. Reference the home run hitter not changing their swing with a non-senior bat, why would a player want to hit a 295' fly ball? |

Maybe Not I know you are supposed to play hard and want to win every game, but the seeding games are not as important to the major plus teams when they know they have to play a two out of three tournament with only one other team. The incentive to win the seeding games is in favor of the major team because the wins will factor into the game times and the quality of opponents during the early bracket games. This is one thought on the combining of two divisions during seeding play. I do agree that giving up the five runs, plus limiting the home runs for the major plus teams does put them at somewhat of a disadvantage, especially the tournaments when they are the only major plus team and have to play every game under this scenario. I have seen the looks on the pitchers face when the major plus team is out of home runs and the balls start going back towards the middle, I'm not saying they are intentional directed at the pitcher, but the guy is going for a hit. and they don't want them coming that way! Without any statistics to back this up, but only a quick thought about the situation, I think by eliminating the 5 runs, and reducing the home runs for the major plus to 5, would be more fair than giving the 5 runs and allowing the 10 home runs for major plus. |
| Sept. 17, 2010 Swampy | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: ASA WORLD IN BURLINGTON I am playing in a tournament this weekend in which Easton is supplying the bats and no other bats are to be used. This will be my first experience in a tournament of this type. The information relayed to me is that each field will be supplied bats of various weights. Should be interesting! Since this is a discussion/message board, my opinion is that the bat concern for the ASA tournament could have been handled more tactfully. If the opportunity to test bats were available, the issue could have been handled then, instead of throwing a team under the bus on the message board. If the bat passed, issued answered! If not, then if the writer felt the need to pass on the information along to everyone else, the facts would be there to validate the statement. The speculation will now follow the team to other tournaments. Einstein gets out there, but I do think that how we play, act, or perceive the rules or softball may be a microcosm of how our lives operate within the confines of our work or community. |

Let's give the first wife the benefit of doubt--maybe the guy usually comes home right after the game and she thought something might have happened to him on the way home. She may have been worried about his welfare. Communication is the key and I like how the other guys handled the change of plans. I still work, so our plan---if I am going to be longer than an hour, I will call home to let them know. Anything less, I don't feel pressured to leave right away if I want to chat. We have guys that their wives call them about 5 minutes after work time ends to make sure they are on their way home. Tough way to relax in a relationship! |

I know it was the first bat I purchased and the results were nothing like the Ultra 2 with no warranty. Yes, you will see many homeruns that travel 370+ with legal senior bats! |

Speaking for my group, I think there was only one tournament last year where we had 7 teams, and the rest usually had a max of 5. I realize local businesses making money is a concern, but why can't they play a couple of seeding games on Saturday morning. Start the regular part of the tournament on Saturday afternoon, and progress with the remaining games on Sunday. I think the number of teams in a division should dictate if you need to start on Friday, not a blanket decision to start everyone. 10-12 tournaments a year, having to take off work on Thursday and Friday, makes it tough! |

If the first post would have presented more information, the rumor mill may have stopped there, or it would have permitted the accusations to not infringe upon the other team involved in the championship game. He does not say or may not know how long the bat was there. I played in the championship game also, and our team, Gekle Builders, had played the previous game. We were in the first base dugout and remained there to play the championship game against Fredericks. They were warming up behind the 3rd base dugout prior to our game. Stripersonline brought the topic to the board and we'll let him run with it. |

Beat me to it Bruce---I quit playing softball for almost ten years and didn't know anything about senior softball until last year. I started playing both senior and with a couple of younger teams. I also didn't know anything about the senior bats or rolling/shaving. I was amazed at the number of younger guys that talked about 'doctoring' their bats. I believe if we allow everyone to use the same type of good/hot bat in the senior division, the chances of guys playing around the rules will be minimal, if non-existant. I guess the selection of what type of ball to use becomes the determining factor if everyone can be satisfied with the bat regulations, and may take one aspect of complaining off the board. |

Perhaps better planning on both sides should be in order. Delegation to have others do some of the scheduling would lower the work load. Oh yes, I have a little more integrity than to call in sick when I am not. |

With over 300 teams scheduled to attend the Phoenix tournament, the task of organizing where/when teams will play, assigning umpires, concessions and everything else is a major job. It is obviously impossible to fulfill the travel wishes of everyone. Granted, everyone should expect to be ther Thursday evening, ready to play Friday morning, and plan to leave late on Sunday or early Monday morning. Easier said than done for some. An extra day of hotel, car rentals, and food costs may be a strain on some and this may be avoided if schedules are posted sooner. I know some will say, "if you can't afford the extra day, you shouldn't come." Well, the goal should be to get as many teams to the event as possible. Now, knowing this tournament is going to attract more than 3 times as many teams as any of the others, it is already broken into 3 segments, why can't there be 1 person assigned to the scheduling of each segment. Let them start to work on this after the Oct. 1 deadline and then get together with the director to review any potential conflicts. We love the game of softball and want to attend, but most have gone through some financially troubling times this year and the value of a couple hundred dollars carries a litle more weight. |

I observed Wally play in the Huntsman and Vegas the previous week. I have yet to see anyone hit one longer than the bombs he hit. After the first two games played in Utah, they were moved to other diamond because they didn't want him to hit the kids while they were on recess. |
| Sept. 9, 2009 Swampy | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Grayhawk Park Softball Complex I do not see a problem with the distance of the fences being 325' for the teams under the age of 55 and in the Major+ or Major divisions. It would make the home run limits acceptable and it may help with the pop-up homeruns that fall over the 300' fences. I would like to comment on the teams having to chase their home run balls. There have been teams that only have one or two extra players and to subject them to running down the home runs or having the wives go get them seem ridiculous considering the excessive entry fees. I know the some of the fields in Florida had a swamp area outside the fence and a person may need a 'Boo Snake' stick with them in Phoenix. Our team paid a young kid to go chase the balls a couple of games, but his mom ended up helping. Having to buy more balls should not be the answer to chasing the home run balls. |
