Come on mad dog -
not wanting to call out any teams. what's the problem? call em out if that's the way you see it. What's with your apprehension? 3293 posts. You obviously don't care what you say or who you say it about, or will it tarnish your reputation?

RIK56 - Great question that I doubt you'll get any good answers to because there aren't any. The CR issue has been beaten to death by a lot of different folks. The CR is a part of the game that's here to stay.

How in the world is running secondary to hitting home runs. Where the heck did that come from? The over use and abuse of the CR/DH for the 50's and 55's ???

Not all CR's are fast runners, they are just healthier than the guys they are running for. A good example is one our CR's on my team. He doesn't play much but always travels with us because he loves the game and likes being a part of the team and the comraderie. He happens to be one of the slowest runnners we have, but like I say he's healthy. Certainly not an abuse, but a contributer.

Some of these guys would still complain if the last out was a world class sprinter used as the CR. Many of them will argue if the sky is blue or is it baby blue just to get the last word in and to agitate the masses. You just got to let them have their fun and let most of it go in one ear and out the other. Every once in awhile they do come up with something that kind of makes sense and shows sign of being worthy of listening to. JMO

For those naysayers about senior bats. There's a proposed rule change for ASA to allow senior bats in ASA championship tournaments for the 2012 season. ASA is concerned over declining attendance and the future of their senior softball program. Senior softball players are being heard all over.

salio2k,
I couldn't agree with you more. The home run is way over hyped. You are correct in saying that in most games the home run limit isn't achieved. I've only seen it done a few of times all year. I've said it numerous tmes before that there's nobody on my team to a man that hits home runs now that didn't hit them when they were younger. The bats haven't turned any of my team mates into home run hitters.
Webbie25,
your question makes it sound like one can just go up to the plate and decide, I think I'll hit one out this time because we're below the limit. Trust me it ain't that easy. Even in the tournaments where excess home runs aren't outs, the limit isn't reached that many times. You might see it at the Major+ level, but that's the exception rather than the rule.

Egos - balony. I know guys today that used to be home run hitters when they were young who can't hit it out now. Most guys just want to be rewarded for hitting a ball well. JMO

There are no home runs allowed in either USSSA "E" or "D". What's drawing these teams to this level is beyond me. There are very few class "A" or "B" teams around the country anymore due the lack of sponsors. All they play in my area almost every weekend for the kids is "D" and "E" tournaments, so that's all they qualify for at the end of the year.

Discussion: where is the beef???

Agreed, We do and should be playing for the love of the game and the competition. Fortunately we are still able to compete.
The prizes are secondary and even stuff I have when I was a kid is either lost or in boxes. It would be however nice to see some of our money returned to us in the form of quality prizes.
The trinkets are really a waste of the organizations money because I'll bet most of us don't even know where some of that stuff is.

Don't forget another but also a big income generator. The organizations get a kick back from the hotels, per room, per night.

If we were using the balls we used back in the day with the good old alluminum bats I'd venture to say we'd still have the same problems as we do now.
Run limits, time limits and the like are soley for tournaments to stay on schedule to keep the scores down. All about money.
I played in the old Pro League (APSPL) back in the late 70's and believe me none of those guys had any trouble hitting the ball a mile or numerous times.
Also played in the NSPC in the early 80's and it was the same. Hell Howard's was hitting them out of a minor league baseball stadium at will during the World Series.

Pricer says - "300" foot fences used to be more than far enough for the best hitters in their day! Now at 50 plus, 325' is to short. Houston, we have a problem!"

Listen fellas. Back in the day 300 ft. wasn't enough either. I don't know what level you guys played back in the day, but guys had no problem hitting the ball 350 ft.+++. 300 ft. back then wasn't enough either.

One thing you don't forget how to do is hit. As long as your body holds up, you can still hit with power. That is unless we we use junk balls and junk bats!!!!

Gary19, you for one are always advocating staying in shape, working out and getting better. Well many guys are doing just that.

I'll say it again. There haven't been that many games this year where the home run limits have been reached that I've seen or played in. So where's the problem?

ISSA is planning on doing away with the Major+ division beginnning in 2012 unless a team specifically requests to play at that level. RB is planning on some rule changes to merge the Major and Major+ divisions next year.

I guess we'll all have to wait and see what he has planned and how it works out. He's also planning on expanding the offering of ISSA tournaments around the country.

Discussion: Softballs Used at Raleigh, NC

Who said anything about home runs or techno home runs or bats or anything else???

Jack #8 just wanted to know if anyone else noticed that the balls didn't carry and had a thud sound when hit at the Raleigh tournament. Jack just represents another senior softballer who wants to play with good equipment.

Staff: Perception is reality. We all know that all 44x375 balls are not the same. They even vary from lot to lot and from manufacturer to manufacturer. The 44x375 is merely a maximum allowed characteristic.

Omar: Save your breath. Some of these guys can't hear what your saying or don't want to.

Pricer: Gary19 didn't respond to the question. I don't usually agree with mad dog on many issues but, in this case he's right on the money. Gary's continued negativity and sarcasm about senior softball is something we don't need.

I haven't personally used it so I have no feedback for you. I know "Clatta" uses it and if you know him, then you know what kind of a hitter he is. The only thing I can comment on though is that I haven't seen to many guys using them at all.

Albuquerque has metropolitan area population of around a million people. Hard to believe you can't get more participation. Especially with your climate.
Good luck in your quest for more tournaments in your area.

Discussion: WELL THEN, WHAT ABOUT 60'S AAA; WHO's THE BEST?

Michigan Vet,
Good question. Could it be that there are more teams in the west? In the 55 division alone in this organization better than 60% of the teams registered are west of the mississippi. Not sure about the other divisions.
Are there more tournaments in the west?

Discussion: Another thought on home run limits

Pricer, You may not think an 11th player is softball. You must not be planning on playing when your 70+.

It's standard and in the rules for senior softball for women 50+ and Men 70+ to use an eleventh player. Also in certain situations as an equalizer.

There's also a local league here 55+ to 70+ that uses an eleventh player.
And no. you don't add a 12th player!!!!

Sponsorship at any level isn't what it used to be since the tax laws changed back in the mid 90's. No longer a write off. This and the economy is a huge reason teams don't travel as much and brackets are small.

AA teams can compete against higher teams with rule provisions. We just played a couple AA teams in prelim games in our last tournament. 2 home runs, 1 up and walks. 5 runs per inning. We also spotted them 5 runs and gave them an 11th player. Games were very competitive.

Ok, only allow players from your home state for residency. Open rosters just means, he with the most money wins. Though nice thought.
