Discussion: 2 FLEX or NOT 2 FLEX

Handle flex absorbs energy that would instead be flexing the barrel. Stiff handle for power. Flex handle may feel better [or not :-)] but it robs power. The contact of bat and ball happens way to fast for handle flex to react in a positive way. The bat is simply flexing back from the ball at contact and rebounding long after the ball has left the bat.The barrel on the other hand does react and trampoline the ball quick enough to matter. So handle flex has more to do with feel than overall performance. Disclaimer; My opinions are my own and I only pretend to know what I am typing about on the Internet.

Discussion: The Villages softball tournament

Rumors flying around that The Villages plans to use the same crappy balls that they use all year long in their daily leagues. It's really sad for such a great annual tournament to do something so stupid.
There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to play in a tournament that is so expensive [entry and hotels]and then have to hit total trash for softballs.

Discussion: How to Play More Innings

1 and 1 count with no extra speeds up the game a lot. Umpires that have no clue where 12' or 15' is along with the 1 and 1 count and people are hacking at the first pitch they can reach. Welcome to the Florida Half Century where with no run or home run limits games finish 7 innings most of the time for most teams. You just cannot be as picky about what you swing at with the 1 and 1 count and it lowers the amount of offense.

Personally I make an effort to invite the umpires to join in at the mound after the game. I have found that most really appreciate being offered an opportunity to do so. I think it is a great idea for both teams to participate because it offers an opportunity to leave whatever happened during the game on the field. Also it seems like this time on the mound is where the competitive natures get put away and friendships have a greater chance to develop.

Discussion: Best ball in Hot Weather

You guys are all so funny talking about the Baden Fire like it really is a 44-375 ball. The reason it holds up so well in the heat is because it just might be a 47-525 marked 44-375. I think Kevin has the ball everyone is going to want.

The balls in question were very obviously a different grade of cover and core. Heat and storage had NOTHING to do with it. It was an entirely different ball.

Discussion: Ball B.S. In lee county

While it is true that the summer heat [March to October]in Florida does have an adverse affect on the softballs we use, this months FHC tournament was played with a lower quality version of the Trump Stote. I was told that they ordered the normal balls but what they got was all that was available. Supply issues have been the norm this year. Even Dudley has not been able to supply enough Stadium balls to USSSA. No conspiracy involved, just issues getting balls made and shipped in a timely manner. The FHC tried to do the right thing but it was outside of their control.

Different grade of the same ball. And yes the SSUSA stamped ball was awful compared to the FHC stamped ball.

Nice, two years in a row. I guess if you didn't pretend to be using Auburndale and Winter Haven nobody would show up.

Discussion: How to get more teams willing to play in the Major-plus division

Having played for 3 years in the Florida Half Century [unlimited hrs] and having played a few SSUSA type tournaments let me say this. It is ridiculously easier to hit with a 4-3 count instead of a 3-2 with no extra. A 3-2 count and umpires who can't tell 15' from 12' when you have a strike on you and the games get much more competitive. Even in the Super A division [top 5 of 85] of the Half Century I would bet that the teams average 10-12 home runs a game [or less] over a 4 game weekend.
I can absolutely guarantee you that with a 4-3 count that number would be more like 18-20.

The dramtic levels of flex you see from TV and some cameras is an optical illusion created by the camera lens. This video should put all of that to rest

BJ, We were using balls that no longer had printing on them. Yes every once in a while you would hit one that was somewhat ok. But the majority of the balls were very old. 44-375 balls do not go splat in 60 degree weather unless they are very old. I hit Trump 44-375 balls in league every week and once a month in the Florida Half Century. These balls were worse than anything we hit all year long including in the hottest months of the year. 50 Major Plus or even 50 Major teams should never go an entire game without a home run. I'll just make sure to remind teams of how the people at the Villages think its funny to make teams play a tournament with year old balls. You talked to one player, I talked to a bunch of people who live in and play ball in the Villages and they said that they are sick of the crappy that they have to use. The same ones they use every day of the week that were used in the tournament. A three day tournament is an expensive proposition for players. If The Villages wants to be that insanely cheap, there is no reason to play there anymore.

Lefty, I heard that after hitting some of the balls in bp, both declined to participate. As far as Team 1, they easily had the most power of any team there and they did an excellent job of using the wind that was blowing out to right center. Their pitcher did an excellent job keeping their opponents from doing the same. I can assure you that none of the 50 Gold teams were happy with the balls. In fact not a single person I spoke to was. And I asked a lot of teams. We will just have to hope whoever runs it next year will allow decent balls to be provided. The idea that such a great tournament would be played with balls that had been used all year by the rec league is a joke.
