I just told my friend who is taking a team out to Vegas in September for the 50's tournament that Mikens are out. He was happy to hear that, especially since he confirmed with the tournament director that they were ok prior to sending in the entry fee and booking 13 people for Vegas.

Regarding umpires, I play in Florda,50's, and we have ISA umpires
for our tournaments. For the most part the umpring has been pretty good. However, it would be nice if they could all be on the same page by calling a four foot pitch illegal instead of a strike and remembering they are not at an ISA tournament.

Discussion: BATTING - RULE 12.3 D

As long as you are in the batters box it should not make a difference whether you move up or back to hit the ball. If your front foot is out of the box when you hit the ball you are out anyway. Very few umpires will make that call unless your foot crosses over in front of the plate trying to hit an outside pitch.

The reason why umpires do not want to make this call is because the white chalk lines that make up the batters box
disappear after the first inning and they cannot tell where the batter's box should be.

If I were to take a guess this may also have something to do with the fact that because they moved the pitching mound back they do not want a batter taking a running start and hitting the ball up the middle.

I do not think it should make a difference if you move your feet or not when hitting the ball as long as you are in the batters box.

Maybe there should be a rule that the batter cannot kick away the chalk in the front of the batters box.

Other than forcing the batter not to move his feet, which is ridiculous, maybe they should create a thin rubber batters box instead of the white lines to prevent a batter from stepping outside the box to hit the ball.

The catcher on my 50's team is in the Softball Hall of Fame and he runs up to hit the ball all of the time. Are you going to make him change his batting style?

If they keep changing enough rules people are going to stop playing. The game is about the players and not the rules committee. I agree on rules to protect the players but I do not see this as a rule that needs to be changed.
P.S. I am a pitcher and the ball comes back just as hard whether the batter is standing still or moving his feet.( I usually duck anyway so it really does not matter!!!!!)

Discussion: Foul Ball!!!!

What happens when a ball goes over the first baseman's head in fair territory and goes over the fence in foul territory? Is it a homerun because it went over first or third in fair territory?

Discussion: DeMarini EVO

I received the 2005 DeMarini EVO a few weeks ago and used it two weeks ago in a tournament. The bat hit real nice and because of the construction it still looks brand new. I took about 50 swings in batting practice last week and the more I hit the better it felt. The bat is balanced as opposed to end loaded. Even when I hit a ball towards the lower part of the barrel the ball still jupmed off the bat. It is definitely worth the money.

If anyone has one or used one, please offer your thoughts as to distance, durability and how you think it compares to the U2.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I have played against Hawk as he is in my 50's division out of Florida. He is a major plus player. He is a legitimate power hitter. I am a pitcher and he is a tough out. When you see him you will know what I am talking about.

Discussion: Rundown rule

If you can be in a run down between first and second or second and third and must be tagged out, why is it that if you attempt to make a second turn towards third base you are automatically out?

Everyone at this level understands the rules of baseball/softball and rundowns are part of the game. If you cross the "line of no return" on your way to home plate, you are automatically out if you attempt to go back to third. Why?

The "line" should be eliminated and the ball should be live and in play. The rule is already in place for putting out a runner at home plate by the use of a second home plate to avoid a collision and potential injury. Why not make the game a little more exciting by allowing rundowns between third and home. Hell, most of us are just happy to reach first base when we hit a single because of our tired legs anyway?. How many rundowns per game do you think there will be?

Do we need to start taking out the wheelchairs? I don't think so!. We are all ballplayers and out to have fun. I do not think anyone is out to intentionally injure anyone.

If you want to talk about safety, try pitching when someone is trying to take your head off by going up the middle. Maybe that will be the next rule in place, any ball hit over the pitchers knees is an automatic out. Come on now, batter up and let's play ball the way the game was intended to be played.

Discussion: New Bats for 2005

I just received my 2005 EVO yesterday but have not had a chance to use it.
I hope that it does remain legal for the 50's for a while. Has anyone used one in a game situation? How does it hit? I am going to Altamonte Springs next week for the monthly tournament and I will report on the bats performance. My model is not ASA approved.

Discussion: Strike Zone / Home Plate

Charlie,
My team was in bracket three and we were 2 and 2 the past weekend. It was not just from our games that I am concerned about as I watched the same scenario with other teams including the top 5 teams. If the ball lands on top of the plate at least you have a chance to take a good swing but when the ball hits the front of the plate and the dirt at the same time and it is a strike it is tough to get to. I am OK with the plate being a strike as long as the ISA umpires get used to the 6-12 foot arc. Maybe they should get rid of the plate as being a strike and just go with the mat. Most of the pitchers have played outside the FHC where hitting the plate is a ball. I will look for you in July as we are off for June.

Discussion: Strike Zone / Home Plate

This past weekend I play in Coral Shores, Florida and was surprised at how many low pitches, under 6 feet, that hit the front of home plate were called a strike. ISA umpires are used to calling low pitches as strikes and the balls that hit the front of the plate, thrown on a straight line, should not be a strike.

Unless you position yourself in the batter's box way in front of home plate you cannot hit that pitch.

Please offer your opinion and state if you feel that the edges of home plate should not be a strike and unless there is an arch over 6 foot and lands on top of the plate it should not be astrike as well.

Discussion: HIT THE MIDDLE.

LOBO:
I have been pitching for thirty years and find that when you play younger teams they do not have regard for the pitcher regardless of age and they will go up the middle when they want to.

I am playing in the monthly half century tournaments and they respect your age and your teams ability to go up the middle as well. One batter almost took my head off but he could not apologize enough that he did so. Part of the reason he hit the middle is because he was standing on the outside portion of the batters box and when he steps to hit he leans towards the middle. The umpires should not allow any batter to be on the batters box line at anytime and should be cognizant of any batter stepping up in front of home plate to hit the ball. Even with the rule of allowing the pitcher an extra 5 feet to pitch, it still does not give you enough time to get out of the way of a hard line drive especially with the Miken bats and 47 core ball.
I am enjoying the competition of the 50's and as long as everyone continues to respect each others pitcher I do not see a problem with the Miken nor the 47 core ball. Being a pitcher I do not try to hit the ball up the middle because I do not want to hurt anyone. This is supposed to be for fun and anyone who continues to hit the middle is only going to penalize their own pitcher when it is his turn to pitch.
