Discussion: Altered or illegal bats

It is obvious in our local league that requires an ASA bat standard that illegal and/or altered bats are starting to be used. I have asked our city softball coordinator what to do to protect the integrity of our league and to develop a policy and procedure to deal with this problem.

He then asked me for my ideas and was curious what the cost would be to test a bat. In this regard is anyone familiar enough with the testing to give me the name of a lab and the cost of testing a bat? Also is the bat damaged by the testing?

Do any players know of an effective policy and procedure for dealing with a protest? The cost of protesting? Who is responsible for the testing cost if the bat is confirmed to be illegal? What the cost of testing equipment would be if a park district purchased the equipment? What protest fee neds to be tendered by the team challenging a bat? Any other thoughts or considerations that players could tender would be appreciated.

Discussion: You make the call #3

Since it is not a force play the runner scores provided he beats the throw back to first base.

Discussion: What Rule covers runner returning to 2nd to avoid tag?

Bruce,
Congratulations on your triple play. That is rare enough but an unassisted triple play. If you had made that third one unassisted that would be something. I wonder if anyone on the MB has completed one of those. You need a runner caught up after leaving third and giving himself up I would think to be successful. I'd be very happy with a triple play (from a fielding position that is). This is getting me anxious to play our first tournament for the year in Indy in early May.

Bruce,
To possibly modify your response if I may. I believe the rule is if a runner on first stays on first after the ball is hit he must be tagged before the fielder touches the first base bag. If the fielder touches the bag first than the runner is no longer a force out position and can remain safely on the bag. This of course would apply to the runner on second also if first is occupied when the ball is hit. If he stays on second he must be tagged by the fielder before the second base bag is touched by the fielder.

"And what if the reversed runner acquires 2nd and the other runner stops half way to 2nd? Defender need only steop on 2nd for the force out and the reversing runner can remain on 2nd and is safe." This is all true but if you tag the reversed runner who is now on 2nd base first, then tag the base you have a double play.

Discussion: the history of pitcher safety concern

As a pitcher speaking from experience I think the acronym for this rule should be changed to PISSED. Pitcher is still sore and equally dinged.

Airbosn,
You can pitch from the back of the pitchers box. Forget 6 inches off the rubber--deliver from 6 feet off the rubber.

Hitt2, Saw this movie a week ago. It's impossible to watch this movie without feeling deep emotion. Kevin Bacon did a great job. No matter how you view the war this film is a must see. We owe our military throughout the ages a debt of gratitude.

Discussion: Houston Winter Softball League

I would just like to send an email out to all the guys I met this winter at Bayland Park in their Senior Winter Softball League. For the first time in my life, this Chicago guy, got to play over thirty games outdoors over the winter before my planned return to the Chicago area in April. Rather than mention names because you know who you are I will just state that many of the guys from Texas Thunder, a couple of Hendricks 50's, a couple from Mission, one from Boaz and many others treated me very well and as a new friend and competitor. I in turn met a lot of new friends in this league. Next year I plan to start playing at the start of the winter league so I will see you at the beginning of November. To all of them I wish a good year at tournaments and hope to see you many of you during this year at same.

Last weekend I played in a local tournament in Pasadena, Texas, with Team Houston against Hendricks, Willies Wolves, Mission and Boaz. Again a bunch of guys that I shared quite a few laughs with and a great hitting team. Good luck to all of you this year. Greg Thomas and Jim Tharp--nice job running the tournament. See you next year.

Mike Machenko--since you sent me your new bat and from the time of my first swing I have not picked up an Ultra. Great sweet spot.

To my Travelodge teammates. See you in Indy for the start of our new year.

I am also man enough to admit when I am wrong. I was and I regret my posts. For the record personally I would play under any rules that the associations believe are appropriate. My teammates can tell you about my record on the mound. Beyond that I have no further comment.

If one pitches at the Major or Major Plus level he must have guts. That doesn't mean I would jump off a six story building. From that there is a correlation with common sense? The"guts" comment, if you read my post was directed to Ronnie. It came about in an earlier email between the two of us. Now do you follow. Maybe I was a little strong with Wood but if you're not tough you don't belong on the mound either.

Okay. Let's see if I can get some fur flying on this proposal. I propose that all DBO hitting the pitcher or thru the pitcher's box also require that the hitter be replaced in the lineup immediately. If there are no substitues then there is an out in the order at his spot each at bat after that. If it happens again with a different hitter in the same game then the same rule applies. Any comments? See Ronnie, I do have the guts to propose it.
