Discussion: Sal Silva Passed Away 1/28/2013

I'm very sorry to hear about Sal. I enjoyed playing with and against him for many years. Sal was the kind of guy that played the game hard but always had fun doing it. You would have a hard time finding him without a big smile on his face. My condolences to his family.

Phil, if you hear of any plans for services for Sal please post them on here. Thanks.

Jack, I have played at the BLD parks for in CA for a long time and they have always run them that way. I never experienced a TSA type search, but they were thorough. They used to not allow Mikens to be used, but you could use the old hot Synergys because they were for sale there. We always had access to water, and the one in Palm Springs even had misters (thank God). The trade off is that, until recently, there weren’t any facilities that could compare with them, field-wise. Now both NorCal and SoCal have great facilities that are available to senior tournaments. The problem with BLD is that they don’t want the senior teams because they don’t spend the money that the kids do for concessions, which means beer, lol.

500 senior teams in California? I find that very hard to believe. I hope you’re not counting the teams in SSUSA’s database. Probably 40% of them no longer exist. They just never bother to clean it up. I’m sure it’s the same way in Florida.

John, wait until your card runs out, then you will hear from them daily until you pay for a new one.

Discussion: Dislike the Cold

I used to play in a lot of the Furlan tournaments, both summer and winter. He would give us a schedule with about 2-3 hrs. between games to keep the guys in the bar. It was a goldmine for him. Around the winter of’79 I was playing in one of the tournaments with the Bobcats, who were the best 16” team of all time, and the guys were so drunk that we couldn’t even catch pop-ups, lol. I played in another of the winter tournaments around that time, after a major snowstorm (something like 24” were on the ground) and I went out to the outfield to my position and there was a 12 ft. spot that was beaten down that the outfielder would stand in. The rest of the outfield was just deep snow. They had painted the ball orange, and when someone hit it to us we would plow through the snow and dig it out. Good times. I live in SoCal now and these people complain about the cold if it gets below 55, lol.

Hey Hitt2, since you won all those tournaments, maybe you guys should move up.

If they allowed 12 ft. you would throw it 14, and you know it. You won't even throw strikes in batting practice.

I heard from the Tanel guy on Friday that they caught some of them. The cops were in their hotel room, where quite a bit of the stuff was, and the idiot opened the door, saw the cops, and started running, lol. The chased him down the hall and caught him. He proceeded to roll over on some of the other guys. That’s all I heard, and it was hearsay, but I hope it was true. DBAX should know the whole story.

He may not speak for the masses, but their (the 5000)participation does. If they didn't like the format and equipment they wouldn't be there.

My sentiments exactly. You guys just step right on this guy’s thread with your attacks. I don’t know Einstein, or any of his friends, but all of this baloney in getting old. Start your own threads to attack him if you want, but leave other people out of it. Einstein, you would have been better served if you wouldn’t have responded to any of it. Now you look as bad as they do.

Discussion: Softball in the naples area?

I was down at Marco Island last March, and the day I was leaving I passed a field where a bunch of seniors were playing. I was surprised to see that many guys playing on an island as small a Marco. I think it was a Saturday, and I wanted to stop for a few minutes, but the wife wouldn’t hear of it. She has no sense of humor.

I think that in order to be able to run for someone you should be in the line-up. Having a guy, whose only value to the team is as a runner once per inning, is against the spirit of the game. If you want to bat extra people in order to take advantage of their speed and conditioning as a runner, then that would be okay. I really can’t imagine anyone wanting to travel to a tournament just to run the bases. It’s coming too close the Einstein’s concept of platooning that everyone laughed at a few years ago.

Discussion: Why isn't my current registration good?

Andy, that’s baloney. Don’t you remember the pressure they put on me last year to re-up my card in December. They said, through multiple emails and phone calls that it had to be done immediately, even though they later admitted it could have been done at the check in at the first tournament. And then they never sent me the card, lol. I had to go on the message board and complain about it before they finally sent it out in AUGUST.

I agree 100% with Player25 except that, unless the ball lands directly behind the plate, almost all of the pitches would not cross the plate through the strike zone, especially with shorter batters. You would certainly have to eliminate the mat, and you should also eliminate the box. Having said that, I also want it said that unlimited arc is extremely BORING! I’d be willing to bet that 75% of the people who champion unlimited arc are pitchers who want to be a bigger part of the game than they should be. This is slow pitch softball, and it has gained it’s acceptance through its high-scoring fast pace. You want to slow it down with 4-5 pitch at-bats and more walks. I hope some of the fielders who would have to watch all this “mound artistry” at their positions, while they stew over 5 inning games with 2-3 at-bats, chime in and tell you what they really think. We have a good game, with fair rules, so please leave it the heck alone!

Discussion: Can we make this a PHX Worlds Score thread?? Post results here

Nobody mentioned the field maintenance at Desert West. It was the best that I’ve seen at any tournament run by SSUSA (dragged and watered after every game). The outfield grass was trimmed just right, and even the batters boxes were kept in great shape. I only saw one random bad hop, and that was in our championship game. Desert West used to be a dump, but things have sure changed. Great job ground crew.
