EXCELLENT job of posting the Winter World's scores!!! Very timely and very much appreciated - especially in these times when going to the ballpark might not be the best thing to do. Thanks Again!

Discussion: Ratings Drop

Just checking: I have talked to some people who believe you need to play in at least 3 SSUSA tournaments - and with poor results you can be considered for a ratings drop. Is this the case? And do one of them need to be a major such world's or western/eastern/northern championships?

Or can you not play in 3 - or maybe not even play at all - more or less "sit out' for a year and still get a ratings drop?

Discussion: Major Plus Teams in Winter Worlds, Session 1

As I look at this schedule - one of the curious things is Timberworks is not even playing Omen in pool play? Hmmm seems like those 2 Major Plus teams would be a good competitive game!

mck71 - They will not be giving 5 runs. They also have the ability to add 4 out of region players unlike any of the 65 Major Teams. Which is huge!

This reminds me of the Southwest Championships when Timberworks was dropped in the 65 Major bracket. If you go back and read those posts it makes for some interesting comments - from even Dave.

Hopefully this will be "equalizer free". The Omen 70 Major Plus team just won the Winter Worlds and are adding several of the Timberworks players who just won their 3rd consecutive Triple Crown. They SHOULD BE playing in the Major Plus division - just like the Winter Nationals in Florida. With all the National, World titles - All-Americans - Hall of Famers if they choose to play down they should play without the extra fielder.

If a 65 team with an age specific no count - chooses to play in an all 60 division they have to play with the one and one count.

Discussion: Major Plus - playing Major Plus Teams

It appears in looking at the Major Plus Division at Winter Nationals in Florida that the 65 /70 Major Plus divisions have been combined - 3 teams. This makes sense because of the 4 out of region players the Major Plus division gets.

But if a 70 Major Plus team decides to play in 65 Major instead - does this mean they get the 4 out of region players - don't have to give up any runs AND will be the only team in the 65 Major division that gets to play with an additional defensive player?

Knowing there are some "different" rules in Arizona softball - how does the "4 year age allowance" work in your tournament?

Discussion: Winners of 65 Majors -Vegas

SD00 is trying to address a key issue with the new Major Plus out of region rule - although it may not be the answer. Unlike an easy 5 run fix and a reduction of HRs in other divisions -- the out of region players in Major Plus is a bigger differentiator.

As to planning...Major Plus teams have faced the same issue over the years. They have usually communicated directly with other Major Plus teams to find out if they were going to a particular tournament. This was done so teams can make plans. (most hotels require a couple days - some maybe a week - to cancel)

In the case of Vegas - the question to ask would be: "was a Florida (or east) team coming?" They certainly have more of an issue with flights. Many in California can drive to Vegas and fairly short Southwest flights can be refunded (used within 1 year) Maybe they said they were coming again - but if they didn't Timberworks knew their options.

Last year they usually played Rebels or R and R. (Old A's have pretty much evolved into 19 Hitmen - Major. Before they had Omen which pretty much evolved into a 70's Major Plus team) A friend of mine played for Rebels and he told me they were NOT going. R and R was reclassified (for the second time to Major) That pretty much leaves Enviro Vac - (bumped to Major Plus) who may go to Reno - but evidently didn't commit to this tourney.

The other option - which many Florida Major Plus teams do is to play down an age group. They seem to do this quite often. Other Major Plus teams have also done this in the past.

Despite all this - it seems like Timberworks wanted to get together and play and dominate 65's again - and SSUSA accommodated them.

I get sometimes in smaller tournaments - divisions have to be mixed. But this is a big tournament and there are 14 teams in the Major Division. So it's not the fact of creating a division so you can have a tournament.

To me - NYGNYY - there is a tremendous advantage to add out of region players - certainly more than 5 runs. It was bad enough when Major Plus teams had 2 - but now they are allowed more - further separating the rosters between a Major Plus and Major team. I think part of the thought process was to not have Timberworks give 5 runs to other Major Plus teams. And while this may be good for some of the Major Plus teams to help expand their roster - it puts further distance from the Major teams.

In Timberworks case, for example, they are getting a third player from Missouri who not only can hit for average, power, play defense but is one of the fastest players in senior softball. Certainly, worth 5 runs by itself - especially running for slower players.

In the past sometimes Major Plus teams have played down to a lower Major level - in this case would be 60's Major - but some Timberworks players usually want to play with other teams in 60's, too. I read in another post this would be unfair to them to do now. But equally unfair to 65 Majors would be the fact that given the roster status they are playing against - they are not able to add out of region players, too. But of course it would be too late to do that now.

I'm sure most of those teams - when they paid their $640 for the Southwest Championships - were not anticipating being eliminated in BRACKET play with a roster like Timberworks. The suggestion to do what was done in the past - have them play as exhibition - makes the most sense.

I agree with SCRAPPY. And as a player now playing 70's I agree with NYGNYY especially with so much time and energy wasted in pool games. Extra time is added in bracket play.

baseballbill is currently a pitcher on a 70's team. It seems there have been many pitchers who tend to favor this. (sometimes quite often on this board) He jumps on the one stat that Dave gave - but you acknowledge you "didn't formally track the stat by age group previously.

I can only imagine trying to play 40's again with senior bats and 5 run and home run limitations. I would think there are a lot of quick outs unintentionally flying out of the park.

Discussion: 11 on defense

I am not a fan of the 11 man. We play it in league and it does change how you hit which I feel hurts you when you play tournaments.

But in terms of tournaments, I do not understand how a team like Omen 70 Major Plus gets to use it when they CHOOSE to play 65 Major. In the tournament rules they claim "it's not an equalizer" are you kidding?

There were ELEVEN 70 major teams at Reno. Making that CHOICE to play 65 Major they should have to play by the rules governing that division. A Major Plus team has to play by the rules of the Major team when playing them. A 65 team - any division - has to now play with the one and one count when they play in a 60 division. If the Omen 70 logic holds true --- then the 65 team should bat with no count (that's what they play) and the 60 teams they play should bat with the one and one count!

TD Tom ... The ONLY automatic move-ups occur for winners of the LVSSA/SSUSA World Masters, the SPA Nationals and the ISA Senior Worlds ... The recently concluded Winter Nationals's and Winter World's do NOT result in an automatic rating change upward for Champions ...

Consistency is the problem. In that light, if I read the tournament results correctly, since it's not been mentioned, Enviro-Vac also won the prestigious TOC Rock N Reno championship - beating the eventual Western National representative in the National Championship games - Nor Cal - by 14 runs.

Some great points being made - especially if you take the time to read what was said. Although based on history of this board there always has to be someone trying to be antagonistic. As the posts have suggested - the problem has been exacerbated at complexes like BLD and the newer complex in Reno (with the permanent lines.)

Being consistent is the problem - there are a few umpires who want to make this a bigger issue - than most players are concerned about. And some umpires are very easily influenced by some teams making an issue of this before the game starts and during the game - so sometimes you have both sides.

Having played all across this country I know geography plays a role, too.

I agree it's a simple fix that several of the posts have suggested.
