Discussion: Winter World Championships Results

You wouldn't need to do all the keyboarding. As has been suggested on this site before by others...at the tournament site take out your cell phone and take a picture of the posted scores at the end of the tournament and post that. It should be accurate with people working there since they should be updating that right at the site.

Discussion: Its suppose to be about players playing the game

Nancy - It's refreshing to hear from an umpire on this. Most people who have played this game would say the same thing about "the best games are the ones that the players do not even remember who the umpire was." But with this guy you knew right from the very first game in pool play that he had his own deal. HE decided there would not be a coin flip to determine home team. HE decided that one team was better and the other team to could take either home or visitors! It sad this Senior Softball organization lets him umpire.

Discussion: Its suppose to be about players playing the game

Its rare but on the other hand why do we have to put up with it? Just finished playing in the Western Nationals. Had an umpire who thought playing in the tournament WAS ABOUT HiM and not about the game! In the pool play - in two games in a row both teams could not believe he let the arc go way above the limit...he declared " It was his interpretation". I thought the organization had determined the rule. It took the bat out of everyones hand and changed the fun of playing.

On a ball hit down the line he called nothing - when the runner on first asked why he didn't call foul he declared it was the runners responsibility to be watching whether the ball was fair or foul. He then declared in a demonstrative voice twice that " NO ONE HAS SEEN AN UMPIRE LIKE ME!"

In the championship game we had the misfortune of having him again. In the first inning a ball was hit to left field and the outfielder came in and made a catch that could have gone either way - again he called nothing. The runners did not know what to do - after everyone asked whats the call he finally made the call. I guess he thought the runners should know what the call should be.

Of course at the start of each of his games he talked about "throwing people out". What ever happened to have fun? But here is where you got to ask yourself - why does he umpire? For the the final days game which didnt start till 8:30 HE SHOWS UP LATE!! So unprofessional - but get this - he starts mouthing about wanting to REDO THE COIN FLIP!?!? Because it was "his game" and that didn't count! Really??? his game????- put his ego aside or put him out of Senior softball the game needs not to adjust to him - we pay too much and want to play too much.

Discussion: Western NATIONALS or qualifier format???

It is a real shame that what I wrote before the Western Nationals started actually came true!! ("real possiblity")

How can you have a true Western National Champion in the 55 Major group when they did not even play each other once?!?! Not even in pool play. They could have if it was set up right. SSUSA needs to rethink using their "qualifier" formatt when there is a tournament like the Western Nationals.

Discussion: Miken Ultra II balanced and end load.

Just another FYI -- Since Miken doesn't seem to be acknowledging this I want others to know this doesn't seem to be a fluke.

I recently bought a red Miken max end-load and it is not only dead but sounds terrible when you hit it. I am returning it to Miken - paying the postage. If it's true what some of the people are saying - that the bat has changed - then I guess returning the bat and getting the same one is a waste of time.

Discussion: check this out!

Brock thanks for responding and at least stating that you had to scratch your head trying to figure this one out. When I first heard we got moved up in mid-year -- of all things -- I thought - oh well - because of all the hub bub on major - major plus teams they must have moved up at least a half dozen teams and we were just one of them.

But when I saw we were the only ones -- WOW -- based on performance?!!?!? We are not having a good year. There are are whole bunch of teams having a lot better performance years than we are. Your team is one of them -- and by no means --- I want to state -- make it clear -- that I think your team should be moved up -- especially in the middle of the year.

You guys won Reno two years in a row -- we finished second last year and went 0 and 3 in bracket play this year! You've won a TOC -- and done well in other major tournaments this year and last. (East - west nationals last year???)

We went 0 -2 in bracket play at SPA this year! Our major accomplishment this year is to win a 4 team Midwest tournament by one run in the championship game and the Minnesota teams did not attend.

The other thing that got to me was the organization referring to our record and run production in pool play!!! Does anyone think that is important? Some of the teams we played don't have their best players playing in pool play. As posted on this site (on other threads) some teams look at pool play as a warm-up or practice. And of course, when playing a Major Plus team they have to give up 5 runs and can only hit 5 home runs.

Our history THIS YEAR certainly points to the fact that pool play can't mean that much. -- we won a couple of games in pool play in two of the biggest tournaments of the year and were given the #1 seed -- should have meant something?!?!?! We preceded to go 0 and 5 after that. That's dominating the division!!! Move those losers up to Major Plus.

So did many other teams qualify for the TOC. Reno, southwest, eastern, atlantic coast, texas, northwest,......there are many TOC qualifying tournaments. Reno had a bunch of teams.

By what I saw no one else got moved up. Unless you know more - there is no rule that says if you win a TOC - you are moved up automatically during the year. Otherwise, where are the other winners?

The price for winning a national tournament - no doubt should be moved up.

I am glad you had a chance to be in my shoes. I hope you had a chance to win a national tournament before you got moved up. Most people do.

We certainly, as a team, don't feel good about our play in tournaments this year...does anyone know of a team that has been bumped up in the middle of the year - to Major Plus of all things - "based on performance" with this kind of performance?

How dumb can this organization get? Pool play must have a whole new relevance. While we have done OK in pool play -- here are the real tournament game results.

We go 0 - 3 in Reno in regular bracket play -- Just went 0 - 2 in SPA bracket play losing our first game 18 - 3. 1-2 in Quad Cities.

Win the Midwest by beating a team from Michigan by 1 run (twice - one run in the first game of bracket play) This was in 100 degree plus heat in KC -- and the Michigan guys admirably played three games in a row!

AND WE ARE THE ONLY 60 TEAM BUMPED TO MAJOR PLUS!?!?!?!?

Discussion: 320 to 325 ft ball parks

Maybe not in your view - 1.5 miles to the 101 -- but from which side of town? the north and south side?? When you think your near the southside you can book a hotel that is close to the park say to the west or south of the fields - but becomes a greater distance when a change is made to the north side.

If the city DEMANDED it three weeks before the event then I guess there was nothing you could do. But some of our players were locked into at least a one night stay.

Also your only reccomendation for a hotel was Xona resort suites -- did you check their rates? There were other hotels in range.

Discussion: 320 to 325 ft ball parks

Tried to post this before...let's see on this try.

I would hope that for next year tournament officials can tell teams where they are going to play -- especially when some of the parks like Greyhawk have 320- 325 ft fences.

Are they worried that some teams might not attend? If so, then that should be sending a clear message.

We all spend a lot of money to attend and play a full season qualifying. To play on parks of normal distance and then to get stuck on a park like this is not right.

It's not just about hitting home runs - which is a lot of fun -- just read the Vegas posts, -- but a park this big changes the whole outfield play. Especially when the outfield grass was so bumpy.

Also, Greyhawk was not the first location for the 55's and many of our players reserved hotel rooms close to the original post.

You want to "dumb down" the balls limit the home runs and then play in big parks.....wow

Discussion: New ball talk part II

First time responding....some of you spend way to much time here.......
1)I have trouble understanding how ANYONE who likes to hit would not want to play with a quality ball.
2) Also it has been my experience, most of time, that the players who seem to want home run rule limitations or ball reductions are usually the guys that can't hit home runs, even with MIken's, trying to make everything "fair for Johnny" - great American concept.
3) Yes the 60's got it right because when they started to play softball THERE WERE NO DIVISIONS..you just played..no pool play.. you went to a tournament and either learned to play or you went home after 2 games.

YEA for Vegas!! - let's have fun hitting the ball again - good balls - no stupid home run limitations!
