Discussion: Senior Softball in St. Louis

To senior players in the St. Louis area: Is anybody out there interested in trying to grow the game in our region? It seems to some of us that interest is fading, and we need to turn it around.

I've had a team at BMAC for the last 5 years, and we've recently seen a drop in the number of senior teams in the two divisions there. In addition, we all know how hard it is to find local senior tournaments or other senior leagues. The only other regular Over 50 league is on Thursdays in Ferguson, and there are a couple of over 60 groups down in the Fenton/Kirkwood area, and you can play pick-up softball with the Over 55 guys that play in Kirkwood on weekday mornings. To my knowledge, that is all there is around the St. Louis area.

Most of us are aware of the great organization that our softball brothers (and sisters) in Kansas City are part of. For your consideration, here’s a link to their website: http://www.kcseniorsoftball.org/

They’ve been at it for a long time, and we don’t necessarily need to try to catch up to them. However, if we as a group don’t start putting some effort in to expanding our game here, I think it may just dry up altogether.

So, are any of you willing to get involved with establishing a group to come up with ideas and actions to spread the senior softball gospel? Do you have some thoughts you’d like to share or some energy you’d be willing to contribute to support some activities? I don’t know what it might wind up looking like, but it seems to me we need to do SOMETHING for the game, and therefore ourselves.

I’d appreciate hearing back from anybody that might want to get involved. My e-mail address is kbrown@cecinc.com and my phone number is 314-608-6354.

Discussion: Two "local" Tournaments/Missouri and Illinois

An update to my first post: The Southwest Missouri Senior Games event originally scheduled for April 27-28 has been postponed. This event may be rescheduled for another weekend in May or early June. I'll post an update if/when I hear about it.

There are two Senior Games tournaments coming up shortly. The Southwest Missouri Senior Games are in ten days, April 27-28 in Springfield, Missouri. The director is Susan Provance at 417-837-5817. She's looking for a few more teams. $270, 5 GG.

The Heart of Illinois Senior Games softball tournament will be June 1-2 in Peoria. This will be our first time playing in this one, but it is supposed to be a good tournament for a smaller event. $250, 4 GG. Contact Janelle Clark at 309-681-2860.

Discussion: St Louis area team

The best senior league in the St. Louis area plays in Bridgeton at BMAC on Wednesday nights. An upper and a lower division-- our team plays in the lower division. There is also a senior league that plays at Forestwood Park in Ferguson on Thursday nights. Contact me at kbrown@cecinc.com for more info. Like everybody else, I'm always looking to add to the player pool, particularly if you are an outfielder. I suspect you will hear from others as well.

We have a team in the lower division of the BMAC league mentioned above. We are in our 3rd year, improving each year, but still a ways to go. (lowest team in the lower division) Always looking for good players that are also good teammates.
