Actually 17, the first couple of years that I played in the SSUSA nationals, what you are suggesting is exactly what we did. In 50AA in Aurora, CO in 1998 we had two pools (I believe seven teams each). We played all the other teams in our pool, with the top two teams advancing to a playoff. Don't remember if the playoff was DE or Single. I thought it was a pretty good arrangement. |

| June 6, 2015 TexasTransplant | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Humor One of my first senior tournaments was at the old Boomer complex in Okla. City. There were eight fields. Our senior tournament was using four of the fields and a flat-belly tournament was being held on the other four. While I was waiting between games a couple of the young guys wandered by our fields. One of them said, not without a degree of respect, "Do you think we'll still be playing when we're that age?" His buddy responded, "Hell, do you think we'll still be alive?" I've told my teammates that back when I was playing 50+ I used to look at the 70's and ask myself why those guys didn't have enough self-respect to quit rather than make fools of themselves. I now know the answer to that question. |

Our catcher picks up the bat and it's four inches longer than anything else in the dugout. Catcher points it out to the umpire who immediately disallows the HR and calls the batter out. Guy was really PO'd, starts talking about getting his gun, see him after the game, yada yada yada, but nothing came of it. |
| May 6, 2015 TexasTransplant | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Sore Toes I have also worn trail shoes for several years after experiencing foot and achilles problems. Most recently, I have been wearing New Balance 876's, although I don't believe they are available any longer. I play outfield and have not experienced any traction problems, even on wet fields. Trail shoes will typically have more cushioning than standard cleats or turf shoes, but they have a more aggressive tread and more sideways stability than pure running shoes, particularly if you go to some of the higher end models. I have noticed on the softballfans.com website that even some of the younger guys are starting to move to trail shoes. The New Balance Minimus Zero Trail V@ mentioned above gets very good revues from them, as does the Solomon Speedcross. |

In Little Rock, back in the 80's, I played with a team called Biohazard. Most of the players, including a couple of PhD's, worked at the National Center for Toxicological Research at the Pine Bluff Arsenal where, among other things, they stored nerve gas. |

Started playing the first of August that year. Still got a bit of a twinge when I tried to fully extend for a catch; that didn't go away until the next season. I had no surgery related trouble with swing (lots of people have told me I have other problems with it). |

I am not plugged into the Senior Softball scene in Houston (live in Plano and play 65's & 70's), but I can tell you there is a one-day, preseason tournament in Baytown on February 21. If you don't get hooked up with a team before then, you might want to drive out and maybe meet some guys in the 55's. It's usually pretty well attended. |

| Nov. 18, 2014 TexasTransplant | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Suggestions for 2015 Not a rule change, but I would like to see someone develop a tool, possibly a website, where teams could post their tentative tournament schedules for the year, along with manager contact information. If we could look at a website and know, for example, that there were eight teams in our class going to, say, Kansas City, but only us and another team going to St Louis the following week, we could adjust our schedule accordingly (not picking on St Louis, one of my favorite cities, but just making an example). Too many times, with conflicting tournaments, it's something of a crap shoot knowing where the action is going to be, and you end up finding out, too late, that you're traveling 4-500 miles to play in a somewhat limited tournament. If I had more computer expertise, I would have a go at this. I suspect it would have to be done outside the auspices of the various organizations because of competing tournament schedules. It would need to be done early so that teams could contact each other to assure the level of commitment and coordinate changes. |

Last time I played on the grass fields, I got my feet tangled up in some kind of monster desert weed and nearly fell down. This thing had tendrils about half an inch in diameter and was about three feet across. I pulled it out by its roots and carried it to the dugout to convince my teammates I wasn't a total spaz! I would add that between the military aircraft coming in and out of Nellis AFB and the gun range up in the hills in the other direction it made me feel like I was back in a war zone. The weather in Vegas was great the last time I was there, but it can get pretty cool with the wind at Shadow Rock. |

Ho, You make a good point about finding out where other 70's (or whatever age bracket you're interested) in are planning to play. I have long thought that I a useful feature for this board would be to have a place for teams to post their planned schedules so that we could all see where the participation is going to be and adjust accordingly. How about it SSUSA? As to the tournaments you mentioned, I don't know where Loudon County is, but I'm pretty sure anything called Buckeye or Great Lakes is going to be more like 1,000 miles from Plano, TX. I do some pretty serious traveling for the tournament we attend, including the 700+ to the NSA in Gadsden and will be in Dalton (800+). I was prepared for the 600+ to Birmingham, as well, but there are some practical limits, especially for qualifiers. Other than the NSA, the best turnout we have seen this year was 4 teams at the SPA tourney in Raymore, MO and 4 at the SSUSA tourney in Liberty, KS, both 450+ miles for me. Typical has been 1 or 2 other teams. Thanks for your input. TT |

Crackerbox (70AAA) has withdrawn due to lack of any other teams in our age group. They were going to match us against a 65AA team, but when we learned they had withdrawn, we decided to withdraw, also. We have had two planned tournaments cancelled outright this season and this is the second one in which there were no 70's. It's turning into a disappointing season! Have we reached a point where there are so many tournaments that the turnout for all but the biggest ones is diminished? |
