Discussion: Runner

We had an odd situation in a tourney last weekend.
The other team gets a hit and the hitter gets a runner, no problem.
2 hitters later they get a hit and they have the guy that earlier asked for a runner went in to run for the second hitter.
Can he run for someone else after being replaced as a runner?

Discussion: Endload?

There are many ways to change bat weights.
Lighter materials in the handle, heavier material on the barrel or like the geezer put a solid steel knob on it.
The biggest problem with all this is the mfg have no real reason to make tight tolerance bats.
We have all gotten bats the weigh an ounce or more different than sticker weight.
As long as they are that loose with weighting we can't really nail down what works best for us.
The ones I talk to have all said the same thing, we are not getting many complaints so it must not be a problem.
Let's face it, we are softball nerds and most players just go play once a week and have no idea about any weighting.
Until there are more serious players who really care about this we are stuck with this system.

Discussion: Finding a bat's swing weight

The reason you want to know swing weight is it is a true number, balance point isn't.
If I find the balance point of a bat where the barrel is made of heavy material like Kevlar it will balance as an end load even though most of that end load is likely from 6" from the end of the bat to the endcap.
If they used a lighter material you would have to add more weight to the cap to get the same overall weight.
The lighter barrel is a heavier swing weight but the same balance point.
I put the cap end of the bat on the scale and rest the knob so that the barrel is slightly off the scale, only the edge of the bat is on the scale.

Discussion: Why is this rule not enforced??

Caveman,
Why worry about the box, let the batter stand where he wants, pitcher has a glove so use it.
Why not let the runner lead off, it's no big deal..
Why not shave bats a little, it won't make much difference.
These are all rules, if you want to play then follow them or give up and go home.
There are ways to change rules, get people to follow you and go to the rules committee and get them changed, otherwise follow the rules.

Discussion: Why is this rule not enforced??

I don't have a problem with the box, my beef is letting pitchers throw a pitch that only gets about 4 foot arc and hit the front of the plate.
If they call those illegal guys wouldn't have to stand so far up.

Discussion: again texas no game times...san marcos,tx

The last one we played in we were told we played at 12 on Saturday, cool we don't have to drive in Friday night.
On Friday we were told they changed and we played at 8 Saturday, now we have to find a last minute place to stay Friday.
We play at 8 and then don't play again until 2.
Bad but not terrible.
Then we play again at 3.
We are ready to go to the hotel when we find out we play again at 4.
So after 4 games Saturday, 3 back to back, we get the first game on Sunday at 8.
Not a good way to run a tourney.

Can't wait to see if I can poke one out up there.
Steve's rusty swing is better than 90% of the hitters good swing.

The only drawback to Austin is the traffic lol.
Those fields are nice, I would love to see some big tourneys there.

Discussion: Hitting from tee vs. hitting pitched ball

Maddog,
When I hit I start by looking at the pitching rubber, start my swing and then bring my eyes to the ball on the tee.
This helps with the timing and also forces me to find and then concentrate on the ball.
It doesn't replace live pitching but it does make timing issues much better.

Discussion: Hitting from tee vs. hitting pitched ball

Too many variables to say for sure but if you had the exact same swing off both a pitched ball and a tee you would have 15-20 foot more with a pitched ball.
Most average hitters get more distance off a tee because there is no timeout or adjustments to be made so they can square it up consistently.
The better the hitter to more distance off a pitched ball.

Discussion: courtesy runner

I wish the rule was if you are going to use a courtesy runner, that player should be outside the dugout between the fence and base coach.
When the batter reaches base the runner is already on the field and can replace the batter quickly.
With time limits I have seen coaches milk time by deciding which runner to send out.

Looking to play senior ball out there this year, anyone know a team that needs an outfielder?
I have been playing in Tyler the last few years and playing on a tourney team out of Tyler also.
I play Lc to right and can fill in at 2b if needed.
Decent pop and a good average.
You can email me at obagain@ yahoo.com.
Thank you.

Discussion: When Is It Bat Altering?

Adding any weight to any area of the bat does change it, if it didn't why add weight ?
Using tape to make a taper should be legal but no one knows what is under there so I understand why they don't allow it.

Discussion: Equalizer runs

I don't see many directors that would take that stance, just in the big tourneys where you don't play out of classification much anyway.
Why would it be an unfair advantage to give them the runs to start with?
We played many times that way and never had a problem making up the runs.

A few key pitching changes, players taking extra pitches or calling time after each pitch.
All within the rules and can easily add 10-12 minutes of wasted time.
What director is going to tell a coach he cant switch pitchers?
If the good better team gets up big quick why not use the rules to help yourself?

So what would keep a better team from wasting time to make sure you only play 5 innings giving them an advantage?
Not that the better teams would do that[sarcasm]

Discussion: New rule

I don't understand all the whining about the HR rule.
So if you cant hit a hr you are going to go middle?
If you want to hit more HR then play up, you get more HR and the pitchers are better able to handle fielding the position.
