Dec. 27, 2018 curty | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Purpose of the rule Wayne- 3rd baseman tagged runner about 15' in front of base with intent to throw to first, but batter was nearly @ dugout- they were on 3rd base side. We were screaming to throw to first, but Ump made the call. |
Dec. 26, 2018 curty | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Purpose of the rule stick- we had already discussed going 2nd to 1st to home- confident in the "normal DP" & then some. Runner on third was a little slow, as we had already seen when he didn't score on previous hit. I had the option of going to the plate after the out @ 2, but saw it all in front of me. Honestly, my thought was 3rd, then plate, but ump beat us to it. Guy on 3rd never left the base! |
Dec. 24, 2018 curty | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Purpose of the rule At Worlds @ Vegas a few years ago the following occurred: bases loaded, no outs, run#4 on 3rd base, run#5 on second. ground ball to pitcher, throw's to second ( to start dp), second base man, see's batter NOT running, throws to 3rd to get that runner, umpire calls batter out for walking towards dugout = triple play - no runs scored! I was second baseman! |
Dec. 21, 2018 curty | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: co-ed I have some ideas to try to keep it competitive, maybe E-M to HQ? One thing for sure, having played/ coached international, womens play @ senior level should not include same age group of men. Will put my thoughts on paper and pass along! |
Dec. 17, 2018 curty | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: co-ed wondering if co-ed will be a National Division. If so, what will be specific rules? Mixed numbers, ages, levels? Maybe Nancy will answer? I have some thoughts but would like official answers if possible. Thanks! O & Happiest Holidays to all |
Sept. 18, 2018 curty | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: runner not on base at pitch umpire declared dead ball DUE to runners off base " as soon as he realized it happened." It was 2 man system but base ump saw nothing. you can bet he was aware after the spat! Also, our orange bag is separated from primary base about a foot for safety. Runner on first was trying to get a running start on the pitch. |
Sept. 18, 2018 curty | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: ROOKIE SENSATION ARRIVES yahoo & congrats to all. Is this Mallory's newest team member? I'm about to get my first great grand child, which I will be attending. Best to all!! |
Sept. 17, 2018 curty | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: runner not on base at pitch yes, Nancy, he was in foul territory, toeing the bag, but leaning back. On the pitch he switched feet, so as to get motion forward. my initial point was as many have stated- off the base before hit or crossing plate= out, but discussion centered around player safety. At least one should have been out, as batter can't hit both lines at once! |
Sept. 14, 2018 curty | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: runner not on base at pitch I have an idea but look to the knowledgeable board members: runners on 1st & 3rd, no out, lefty batter up: runner on 1 is leaning back, with 1 foot on safety base only, runner on 3 is also leaning back toeing the base as pitch is delivered. Both runners vacate their positions while pitch is in the air into foul territory. Original call was no pitch, as runners were not in position. After 20 mins of discussion, all agreed to go with that, as no penalty to either team ( really just wanted to resume play!) how would YOU call it |
July 25, 2018 curty | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: You Make the Call actually had similar situation ( as umpire) years ago: bases loaded, no outs. 2nd baseman, attempting to field a ground ball, had ball go inside his shirt. he went to the base for the force out on r1 with the ball still in there, with arms crossed to contain it. I made no call, but the runner assumed he was out & left the field- at which time I declared an out. At the completion of the play the fielder retrieved the ball & held it up for all to see. As a coincidence, this fielder had a prosthetic leg! True story! |
July 2, 2018 curty | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Was the ump right?? in this scenario wouldn't the runner be out for NOT touching orange on a play at first? |

March 21, 2018 curty | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: runner scoring recently saw a similar play, with the variation as follows: bases loaded, 5th run on third, no outs: ball hit to left field, dropped in but fielder was charging hard to take away the hit. runner on third was tagging, but then took off when ball hit the ground. However, nobody else made significant effort to advance (expecting the throw to go home). Left fielder threw, hard, to third, then to second & on to first for the triple play! NO RUN. Of course, huge argument, especially since this was a volunteer umpire at a vacation, nonsanctioned tourney. I am amazed by the things we see regularly. |
Jan. 10, 2018 curty | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: "team "player wondering how many teams acquire a player for 1 or possibly 2 seasons, with age not being a factor. Seems like a lot of guys switch teams on a regular basis, while in my younger years our teams stayed together more. I realize that some players move due to skill level, location, injury & personal issues out side the game- not talking about them. Seems like players have lost team mentality in favor of greener pastures on a more frequent basis these days. I don't consider these as good teammates. Any thoughts? |
Dec. 14, 2017 curty | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: survey voted for 1-1, no foul. my reasoning is not just to speed up the game, which I believe it does, but from a standpoint of a hitter and / or pitcher. it's slow pitch softball. 0-0 was meant for baseball where the hitter is at a disadvantage. We play with a larger ball, very little "trickery" allowed to pitchers, slow speed (arc), and of course special bats. I have heard & probably uttered " it only takes one" more than once a game! I believe hitters are extremely spoiled as it is, with most taking a strike (wasted pitch) before preparing to bat. Having played with the 1-1 count for many years i think it is an easy adjustment. Just my opinion as a player, umpire, manager, administer. |
Sept. 27, 2017 curty | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: out or not? ball was ruled foul ( third strike = out), said runner was "in play", therefore out. experienced ump, usually very competent. |
Sept. 27, 2017 curty | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: Bad experience for a Class Tournament - Worlds If game was protested immediately, no one should have left the playing area. Discussion ensues, TD rules. If out is up held, as it should be, and team has left, forfeit. When a properly timed protest is registered, every thing stops. of course, an Umpire should have seen & ruled appropriately to begin with. |
Sept. 27, 2017 curty | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: out or not? recent play: runner on 3b, no out. batter hits ball foul down the line with 2 strikes, runner jumps up to avoid being hit, in fair territory, but ball strikes his out stretched hand. What's the proper call? Ump's original call= double play! |
Sept. 7, 2017 curty | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: effect of interference call by umpire there are several rule declarations that state that a runner MUST avoid contact with a fielder. In usssa ( should be same in SSUSA) when a runner is retired- put out, he is no longer entitled to anything, includeing base path, which is all the more reason to avoid contact with a fielder. "takeing out" a defensive player at any time in senior ball is morally wrong, and illegal by rule, resulting in the second out being awarded, or sending runners back to the last base prior. IT IS THE RUNNERS responsibilty to avoid contact and umpires need to be aware of this. I personally have seen a number of injuries due to over aggressive runners. As an umpire of 30+ years, i have never hesitated to make this call |
