umpire was not looking. he was putting a ball away when the pitch was made. By the time he realised what was going on, the play was nearly over!

what would you call this? batter in box, pitch thrown- legally by definition, batter hits ball, everybody does what they should( runners, fielders), resulting in 3 run triple. As all this transpired, the ump starts hollering "no pitch." he sends all back to where they started. Then warns pitcher that he will be thrown out of the game if he does this again! THIS HAPPENED IN "IF GAME @ Vegas. Curt Snow, Hanningtons 60 AAA.

Discussion: Play at the plate

the play occured right at the commitment line. the runner crossed the line with the thirdbaseman chasing him to tag him out, at which time the runner fell back towards fielder with the ball, falling to the third base side of the line. Umpire discussion was that the runner would have been out ( for returning over the line) IF the fielder was not in the way, which caused the runner to fall to the ground.
it apperared that the runner did this intentionaly, as he immediately began to complain.

we had a similar type play. In a rundown (pickle) the runner stopped before the commitment line and attempted to return to third. resulting throw had him trapped & third baseman ran him to the line, where the runner crossed & then reversed direction, running into the player with the ball. this resulted in the run scoring because of interference by the third baseman, even though the runner caused the collision! This occurred right at the commitment line. Umpires judgement was that runner was attempting to reverse & would have been out if third baseman hadn't made contact. maybe we need to address this situation, as this play looked intentional.

what is the case when an outfielder, throwing to get runner @ first on a base hit, has throw go out of play past first baseman?

what award does batter/runner get if the throw ( from left field) is intended to get runner @ first, but goes out of play past first base man. Throw not in time but close, or might have gotten the out if caught?

Discussion: scorer question

how does the international tie breaker rule get scored in the book? Does it have a special designation? What if the first choice is injured, passing it on to the next batter, taking the out? Any ideas?

Discussion: Time to move TOC

webbie- I play for Baystate Bombers- u beat us for TOC win, @ which time we met! I have organised tourneys for years, including travel arrangements on occasion, and understand the amount of time money and effort just to get that done, let alone an undertaking of this magnitude!! Hope knees are better, and we meet again on the field.

Discussion: Time to move TOC

I can understand all the points for changing dates for TOC, but also see that a lot of time and money has already been invested. The logistics of a "free" tourney: field use and prep, not just for games, but also for other events, free dinner (and facility,) shirts ( not "T"s), awards for skills competition, Free rings for winners, and I'm sure there are more. Some will say it's not free @ paid entry but that only barely covers the expenses of a 5 gg tourney. ( umps, balls, field maintenance, etc) To me it seems that a lot of sponsorships are involved in the rest of the story and I'm sure that a long term commitment is necessary to achieve all this. I'm quite pleased to be @ 60 degrees, even with a little rain, as opposed to -10 and snow, AND playing ball. As such, when the opportunity presents itself- I will be there. Just my $.02 worth.

Discussion: SSUSA AND SPA MEETINGS

i like the home run derby idea but how about the top hr hitters in each age division, @ major tourneys, be invited to the TOC for a Home Run Derby! And, batters box outs should only be called when hitting the middle. Courtesy runners should come from the on field lineup. Age groups are o.k., as I see a big difference between the top 50+ age teams to the bottom of the 60+ group.and even more noticeable @ the 65's. The good 50- 55 players are stronger, faster and fatigue less and slower than a 60 year old. Yet a good 60 can play 55, but there are few 60+ yr olds playing 50's.

Discussion: Positioning of screen protecting pitcher

we have developed a system: screen must be in front of the pitching rubber ( pitcher must be in pitching box @ release) and any batted ball is a foul ball that hits the screen. If it is the third strike ( 1 to waste) it is out. Works for our league. Thrown ball that hits is live.

Discussion: Rules question. Happened at Huntsman

Wayne- the batter was not listed on the line up card. Not as a starter or sub. On field ruling was- illegal player- batter out, all runners return. After a very long and heated discussion, as the other team insisted it should be a forfeit!! The decision was that the batter could not continue in the game. I believe he should have been placed last in the order ( clerical mistake) and charged with batting out of order because he played defense. Second scenario was called a triple play as the throw to second beat the runner.

another bases loaded situation: batted ball hits runner ON third base, in the knee area. He is unable to move to due to injury. third baseman picks ball up, tags runner on the ground, steps on base then throws to second. What's the call?

Discussion: Rules question. Happened at Huntsman

love these: new scenario: first inning, bases loaded, batter hits homerun. Score keeper then approaches umpire noting that batter is not in the line up, however he did play defense in the top of the inning. This happened in the finals @ a World Tourney. Player had been in every game (7) on this Sunday.

Discussion: STAFF Question on the Tie Breaker Rule

if the situation is: pinch hit for starter, who became last out;.. 2 outs, no one on base, score tied, bottom of open inning, batter that wears braces and can barely run-- coach pinch hits with a hitter that might hit a homerun but he flies out- does the batter have to run? I might use a speed guy to pinch hit. this was a very real scenario, used @ TOC in the past.

Discussion: New for Vegas

LOL- it was a single and error!! Kidding of course- i believe it was a triple! And well hit! I felt more comfortable w/ 27- didn't realise the difference in end load. It had some good feel and would like to get more swings w/ both, but Massachusetts weather will prevent that for now. I'll contact you in the early spring. right now we are getting ready to hit snowballs. Nice to put a face and personality to a web name. Good luck on the rest of your season.
