Altered Bats & Bans
I have played Senior Ball since 99'; If possible, I would stand face to face w/Jesus Christ (cause I am a Christian) & tell him that I have NEVER used a shaved, rolled, vised or rod removed, or reloaded bat in a game. I have had one rolled before in front of many witnesses (a guy had built a new device & they wanted to try it out) but my conscience bothered me & I have never used it. I did not include the rolled part to start an issue about whether this is legal or not. The reason for this post is to state that if a player is protested about a bat & it is found altered, he only & whoever used it, should get the ban & NOT the whole team. As Master12 said:” For my part I have coached softball for 16 years, normally 2 to 3 teams each season as I did this season (40+, 45+, & 50+). I have around 50 players on the 3 teams and I do not have the time to check every players bats or other equipment and am probably not going to in the future. So if as the coach, I am to be lynched by all of you in the innocent masses then so be it.” If you have ever coached, you spend a lot of time planning the tourneys, hotels & etc; you do not know what all the players do in their off time. Only the player (s) that used the “proven” illegal bat should be banned; the degree of the ban is up to the associations.
Even though there are 11+ players on a team, everybody does not know about every player's bats. I strongly pushed the snowbird rule change in the SPA & got everyone that I knew to send respectful e-mails to the associations. I do not want to suffer because someone else cheats. So my vote is: if a player is caught w/an illegal bat, the whole team SHOULD not receive the penalty.
I never was in favor of the U2, but the majority wants it, (so be it) but as far as cheaters: allowing the Ultra II is not going to stop cheaters; they will reload, shave or whatever those bats also, Cheaters are cheaters are cheaters.
