| April 14, 2014 SALSAKID49 Men's 60 161 posts | SSUSA TOURNAMENTS...??? I have question for the the SSUSA STAFF. How can you schedule an event in Escondido for May 1-6, one week after the LVSSA/SSUSA Event, but then have to cancel it? Also, why isn't there enough SSUSA tournaments during the season in the SOCAL region? There are at least 100+ Sr. Teams from 40's-80's looking to play SSUSA. Plus plenty of quality fields to use. I'm sure many of these teams would not have a problem travelling to these events. I'm sure this would also apply to the NORCAL and CENTRAL CA. areas. I don't get it..? |
| April 15, 2014 TGIII Men's 60 106 posts | Jose aka Salsakid49. I normally don't respond to very many posts on the message board and especially do not respond on behalf of SSUSA. Your post is referencing a Top Gun SSUSA tournament and I do feel compelled to reply to your message. The May SSUSA Top Gun tournament is a qualifying event and the scheduling and staffing of the event is the total responsibility of Top Gun and not SSUSA. With six weeks left until the tournament there were only 6 teams signed up in all of the age groups combined. We contacted many of the teams that are regular supporters of SSUSA/Top Gun tournaments and they indicated that they could not play back to back weekends. So the Top Gun Association made an executive decision and cancelled the tournament, giving teams an opportunity to find another tournament. As you know, there are five organizations that conduct senior softball tournaments in SoCal. Of those organizations, two offer tournaments using SSUSA rules. Three other groups use modified tournament rules to adapt to the local demand. All five of the organizations offer quality tournaments each and every month. | April 16, 2014 TGIII Men's 60 106 posts | Jose. Thank you for your message. I agree that we could use a lot more SSUSA tournaments in SoCal, but we are limited on field availability. With five organizations running senior softball tournaments and only two operating under SSUSA guidelines, it reduces the number of available tournaments. I also agree that I like to play local as well. I'm sure that you have already noticed that SSUSA has moved the California State Championship to Hemet (July 8th - July 13th). This tournament has traditionally been held in Northern California, but SSUSA is trying to bring more major tournaments to SoCal and this is a great start. So let's get those 100+ SoCal teams to support this event. I'm sure we'll see you on the field. Good luck this season. Kevin |
| April 16, 2014 SALSAKID49 Men's 60 161 posts | That's fine.. However... why would SSUSA purposely put the Cal Cup on the same weekend as the tournament in San Clemente? Isn't that normally done on the weekend after the 4th? The park says they could have had any weekend in July... all weekends were available. BTW... word is that no one rents these fields in July.., because the heat index is about 105 degrees.. that too hot for us old guys... :) |
| April 16, 2014 taits Men's 65 4548 posts | Hot weather is one reason teams stayed away from Fresno when it (the Cal Cup) was here a few years ago. But it was only 90* then. Reno, Vegas and others hit the 100 marks &. they still show up. It's about timing for what might bring the most teams even if the event cost more than others in same local about same time. You know, MONEY. You can't depend on the weather. |

| April 16, 2014 gott2play Men's 60 212 posts | Scott, Not that Fresno isn't on everyone's destination list, but teams show up to Reno and Vegas when it's 100 because...well, it's Reno and Vegas! I was in Fresno that year and it was in the 90's with just enough humidity to make it uncomfortable. We had an umpire go down during one of our games...not good. Since you're from the Fresno area, I'm sure you're used to it. Fresno was SSUSA's attempt to pacify the Southern California teams that year and move it closer to So Cal, and probably won't happen again. This year the Cal Cup is going to be in Hemet where July temperatures will be at or around 100 degrees. We'll see how that goes. Tony Baltazar So Cal 55's - Major |
| April 16, 2014 TGIII Men's 60 106 posts | Jose, The tournament you're referencing in San Clemente is a non SSUSA event. The tournament in July is being run by SCSSA and is a non-sanctioned SSUSA tournament. Since there are five organizations running senior softball tournaments in SoCal, I can understand the confusion. On a side note, I have played in the snow (29 degrees) in Reno and 105 degrees in Las Vegas. Point me in the direction of the next tournament and I'm there. | April 17, 2014 SALSAKID49 Men's 60 161 posts | Keith.., You keep referring to 5 organisations. Who are they? I know of only (3-4) SSUSA, MARV'S, Nate (ASA) and Doug MSA/WSL both Doug and Nate only get the 40's teams NO 50+ AND UP.. and most of that is of course, the 40's in (part) refuses to play SSUSA, ONLY in Spring World's and Masters World's, those are on the radar of teams that I know of here in SoCal. So far, from what I've played on and seen.. It's Marv who puts on about 11+ tournaments a year and possibly are attended more than the others combined, but also had has his critics and I'm one of them... LOL!!, but I respect him for what he's doing so far, because he's the only game in town right now.. With all the $$$ that SSUSA makes, I would like to think that you guys would be the top notch Org. to rule Sr. Softball, by adding more dates here in SOCAL and up in NORCAL for teams to play in. I'm talking about the 50's, 55's, 60's and up... So far for July Marv has about..? (14+) teams signed up and I heard a couple from NORCAL.. I know last year Marv tried to his event listed as qualifiers.. not what has happened.. but I'm almost sure that any of Marv's dates would make good qualifiers/recreational events. Is there politics going on here...? I hope you guys do not lose that July event, due to potential high heat index in Hemet... are you guys thinking of the players and umpires well being...? J/S... :) Side note, I've also played in Reno to Vegas both the freezing cold to the high heat of Vegas... but we're much older and the body at our stages of life can only hold soooo much.. ;) |

Night life is not as deLIGHTful that's for sure, but there are 3-4 casinos about an hour away depending on where your staying if one is into that. As for fields they are plentiful if planned for and like other vents they are across town or in another. So cal has more places and newer ones to boot. But enjoy the traffic, it's a joke. |
| April 17, 2014 Uncle Mike Men's 60 122 posts | I am the manager of the Oxnard Rookies, we have been trying to host some SSUSA qualifiers in Ventura County for the past few years. The city of Oxnard used to host 2 or 3 qualifiers every year. Because of our ocean breezes in the summer months and moderate winter weather- we are the perfect area to be hosting SSUSA qualifiers anytime during the year. The city decided not to host any more senior events, so I've tried to host a few SSUSA qualifiers, in Oxnard, over the past 2 years. In 2013, I was approved to host a qualifier and that they would post it on the SSUSA website. There was some confusion and it was posted under their recreational tab and it generated only 1 phone call. This year, I called in January and I asked about hosting a qualifier this year in Oxnard- I was told that the schedule was already set for 2014. They told me to call back in August to try to set something up for 2015. So I will be trying to host some qualifiers next year for SSUSA in the Ventura County area. I have talked to Paul Cochet about hosting a tournament in Santa Barbara, and I have had numerous discussions with the cities of Ventura, and Oxnard. The Five Plus Associations offering Slow Pitch Senior Softball: 1. Senior Softball (SSUSA) 2. Top Gun Senior Softball Association 3. SoCal Senior Softball Tournaments (SCSST) Don Reddig 4. SoCal Senior Softball Association (SCSSA) Marv Ruddell 5. No. County Senior Softball (NCSS) 6. MSA - Doug Skaggs 7. ASA - Nate Hines As you can imagine senior organizaqtion vying for limited field avaiability no matter the age groups. By the way, I'm sure you noticed the SCSST tournamen; May 15 - 18 in Riverside and July 26 - 27 in Poway. But with so many playing opportunities I can imagine why it would be easy to forget some. Side Note. Mike, I always enjoyed bringing our Top Gun team to Oxnard. Fun place to play.
