July 18, 2014 baseballbill 137 posts | Ball Fair or Foul??? Correct me if im wrong: First: If a ball bounce over third base and the next bounce is foul, the ball is foul. Second: If the ball hits third base and bounces foul towards home plate, the ball is foul. Third: If the ball hits third base and the next bounce is foul behind third base, is the ball fair or foul?????? |
July 18, 2014 B.J. 1105 posts | 1st fair ball 2nd fair ball 3rd fair ball ......... 1.22 • FAIR BALL....A fair ball is a legally batted ball that: B. Bounds over or past first or third base, which is in fair territory, regardless of where the ball hits after going over the base. D. Touches first, second or third base. |
July 19, 2014 baseballbill 137 posts | B.J.: Thanks, If you review the discussion "runner hit by ball" S.S. Staff comment that if a ball hits third base and bounces back towards home and hits the runner in foul territory, its foul because the ball did not pass the base. Again, correct me if im wrong. |
July 19, 2014 B.J. 1105 posts | the rule says a fair ball is one that TOUCHES first, second or third base it does not say that the ball has to pass by the bag to be fair |
July 19, 2014 baseballbill 137 posts | B.J.: Are you disagreeing with Senior Softball interpretation????? |
July 19, 2014 baseballbill 137 posts | B.J.: It also appears that Senior Softball has a different rule then Baseball. |
July 19, 2014 mad dog Men's 65 4191 posts | not sure where you saw this..but all situations you have posted should be called fair balls...if not your umpire is not educated in the rules of ball....and all calls will be for softball or baseball......doesn't matter...... |
July 19, 2014 baseballbill 137 posts | mad dog: Read the discussion "runner hit by batted ball" and read s.s. staff response. |
July 19, 2014 baseballbill 137 posts | mad dog: I see that you were involved in that discussion. Im still unsure about a ball hitting third base and bounces back towards home plate and stops in foul territory or is touched in foul territory is a fair ball after reading that discussion. Please enlighten me!!! |
July 20, 2014 B.J. 1105 posts | baseballbill....i dont know if that is possible |
July 20, 2014 baseballbill 137 posts | B.J., mad dog: Thanks for correcting me. I made some bad assumptions when reading another discussion. I should know better then to think that S.S. rule is different then baseball in a fair or foul situation. |
July 21, 2014 Garocket Men's 55 259 posts | The way the rule book reads and is what I have always called and been umpiring for 31 years is A ball that hits ihe ground in fair area in the infield and bounces over 1st or 3rd and goes over the bag annd lands in foul area , that is called the bounding ball rule and would be ruled a fair ball. The part about a ball hitting a bag and bouncing back towrd home being foul I have no idea where staff come up with that ruling but in every rule book I can find that would also be declared a fair ball |
July 21, 2014 stick8 1991 posts | Any batted ball that hits first or third base is a FAIR ball, no matter where it carroms off to after. I had one play several years ago where the batter hit a hard, low line drive that hit the edge of third base. The ball carromed off over the fence down the third base line out of play. It's a fair ball but how many bases does the batter-runner and any runners on base receive? |
July 21, 2014 Garocket Men's 55 259 posts | 2 bases No different than any fair ball going into dead ball area |
July 21, 2014 stick8 1991 posts | Garocket is correct!! Now what would be the call in the same scenario but it hits a runner who had moved off third into foul territory to try and avoid being hit? |
July 21, 2014 Garocket Men's 55 259 posts | Not covered in SSUSA In ASA if a runner is hit in foul teritorry with a fair batted ball and no defensive player had a chance to make an out the ball remains alive and in play. |
July 21, 2014 Garocket Men's 55 259 posts | Exact ruling Rule 8, Section 8, Paragraph E Runner is Not Out "When a runner is hit with a fair untouched batted ball over foul territory that in the umpire's judgment no fielder had an opportunity to make an out. " |
