Bat Speed
There's a LOT of discussion on this message board about illegal bats and bats in general. Quite a few posts from some guys who I get the impression from, are pretty big hitters.
I've got a question for the big long ball hitters. Does any one know what their bat speed is? It seems to me that if a person's bat speed is rather high, then they would be able to go yard with a bat right out of the wrapper or an altered bat.
I've seen my son clear the light pole on a 300 ft. field using a CU31 aluminum bat years ago. Back then we were using .47 core Blue Dot balls but still, that's a hell of a shot using a CU31 bat. He has tremendous bat speed but I don't have any idea just how fast it is.
I guess my point is, just because somebody is hitting 350 ft., or more, bombs, don't "assume" they're using an illegal bat. There's "A LOT" to be said for bat speed and techique. A lot of us probably generate enough power to clear the fence, it's how well we transfer that energy to the ball during and after our swing. The big hitters are much more proficent at it then most of us are, that doesn't mean they are using illegal bats.
I just wish I could do what they do and probably if I spent as much time and energy in batting practice as they do, I could put a few more out as well.
Keep swinging.

Great topic Mitch. Along with that we might as well ask the opinion of swinging a heavier bat versus a lighter bat = momentum versus heft to see what the opinions are. It seems to me back in the TPS and Bombat days we were hitting just as far if not further than today when we had a live ball. Most of us were swinging around 34x34 at that time I'd bet. It either show how far we've come or how far we've declined along the way.
There's supposed to be a great book out on the physics of baseball that might help with the subject. I've looked at a couple of the local chain book stores but have been unable to locate it.

Out here in Az, Chandler - Scottsdale, there is a guy we call 'homerun Bill' , he is a young pup of about 55 but can hit 320 - 350 or more almost every time (and with a reg bat- no U2). He is a former college hitting coach.
Billy has helped us with hitting tips and bat speed is the key. I always wanted to swing a Babe Ruth bat but now I go for the speed. Billy has also helped by line up our small kuckles to get even more bat speed.
His thought is that no senior should swing any more than a 28oz.
Also I have learned that the avg bat speed of the avg senior is about 65-75 mph (hope I got that right). At our level of play it is bat speed that matters.

BATGUYAZ: That might be for older SENIORS. B & N SPORTS, have 4 several yrs, test bat speeds 4 both Men & Women. They tested D, C, B, & A PLAYERS.

If, my memory, stands correct, the 65 to 75 MPH, bat speeds, were that of the Women. The highest, recorded bat speed, that B & N, recorded 4 a Man, was 107 MPH.

There are some site that one can go to & find the following:
1) Bat Speed 2) Batted Ball Speed 3) Follow thru, which is the speed of a players bat, after a ball has been hit.

one of these sites talk about a 6'-8" person, who weight is 280 lbs: compaired this person to a 6'-0" person who, weight is 180 lbs. All else, being "EQUAL'.

U r collect, about bat speed. But, one should swing a bat that they feel comfortable with. Also, there is only one BAT MFG, that has the Bats swing weight listed on their bats.

LAST POINT: A bat that is balance, is a better bat 4 persons that like to hit to all fields. MIKEN & EASTON REPS, will tell u that when one uses a balance bat, ones' hands 'push' thru the hitting zone. With A END LOADED BAT, the head of the bat will whip thru the hitting zone.

THRUMPBALL: If, u read this, please, help out.
Myself, I have gone to End Loaded Bats, that are 29 to 30 ozs.

BAT GUY AZ: AL, I have some infor u on bat speed. Here is 1 E-mail, that I recieved. B.) Is a Summary.

Stephen,
What test are you talking about? There are swing speed statistics listed for older bat reviews on the LTD website as well as in a few articles.
A person's swing speed is NOT an indicator of performance. Batted-ball speed is the only criteria to look at in terms of performance. We have people that attend our hitting clinics that have measured swing speeds as high as 107MPH and to date, not one of them has had the highest batted-ball speed. It is actual energy transfer that is important, not potential energy which is what swing speed indicates...

B.) This is very complex. One needs to read some articles from L. Noble @ KSU, B & N SOFT-BALL, & others. FACTS:
1) One can have a swing speed of 100 MPH, but if one can't convert that speed into batted-ball speed & distance, it will not mean very much. In one test the bat speed was 80 MPH & the BBS was 84 MPH; the balls distance was 330'. Another test, the bat speed was 92 MPH & the BBS was 83 MPH; this balls distance was343 MPH. etc.

2) Softball COR. have a slight neg. effect on BBS; increasing the COR. from 40 to 47 COR. will decrease the BBS of over 3 MPH & decrease the balls distance by about 11'.

3) "A" players, over a 6 yr. test , bat speeds were in the range of 85-100 MPH.

4) Testing of ball collision is hard because of: a) angle of deflection b) inconsistent ball compression values c)ball cover slippage properties d) varying MOI values for each bat models.

5) Depending on the batters swing mechanics & the bats location of it's sweet spot, the speed of the sweet spot will be 85-90% of the end-of-bat speed. Simple? If a 6'-6", 280 lb. person swings a bat @ 100 MPH & another person, 6'-0" & 180 lb. swings the same bat @ 100 MPH, the one with more power & skill (TIMING) will hit the ball harder. Once a ball has been batted, how much does the bat slow down to? 90 MPH to 76 MPH or 90 MPH down to 69 MPH.

AL, if, u send me an E-Mail, I will try & send u some sites.

BEST of LUCK: Swing as Heavy of a Bat that one can, w/ out Losing much Bat Speed. The STONEMAN..

Mitch you hit the nail on the head. The big hitters with great bat speed will hit the ball very hard and are often accused of using altered bats.

Bat speed is very important and those who have high bat speed will struggle with the balanced bats and the new Combat even in the end load model because they are made for the lower bat speed.

Here is a great workout from a guy I know Mike Macenko and his web page: http://www.houseofswing.com/index_1.html

12 Week
Increase Your Bat Speed Routine

1st week Monday and Wedsneday
2nd week Tuesday and Thursday
3rd week Monday and Thursday
4th week Tuesday and Friday
5th week Monday and Wednesday
6th week Tuesday and Friday 7th week Monday and Thursday
8th week Tuesday and Friday
9th week Monday and Wednesday
10th week Tuesday and Thursday
11th week Monday and Thursday
12th week Tuesday and Friday

You need to do this routine for at least 9 weeks to get the full effect.
If done for the maximum of 12 it can only help you that much more.

Bat Speed Routine

Sets Bat Weight Reps
1st set Heavy Bat 10 - 12
2nd set Light Bat 10 - 12
3rd set Heavy Bat 10 - 12
4th set Light Bat 10 - 12
5th set Heavy Bat 10 - 12
6th set Your Own Bat 10 - 12

Important!!!
The key to this exercise is to do it at least two times a week.
If you want to do this routine more than the 2 times I have perscribed
feel free to do it. It won't hurt you.
If done correctly you should have increased your bat speed anywhere from 10 to 25 %
It should definitely help in 2 ways.
1. It will help you with the distance of your ball.
&
2. It will help you hit the ball through the infield that much faster.

If you have any questions about this program feel free to e-mail me. Thanks!

This works along with weight lifting.
