WHO ARE CURRENTLY THE MOST POWERFUL HITTERS IN SENIOR SOFTBALL
WELL THERES ONLY ONE WAY TO DECIDE THAT FACT AND THAT IS TO HAVE THE BEST POWER HITTERS IN THE WORLD AT THE SENIOR SOFTBALL LEVEL GET TOGETHER AND SLUG IT OUT! MY MONEY IS ON THE CANSECO BROTHERS JOSE AND OZZIE AND IF YOU THINK DIFFERENTLY THEN JUST GET OUT THERE AND PROVE THEM WRONG.THEY HAVE PUT OUT AN OPEN CHALLENGE TO ANY POWER HITTER TO PROVE THEM WRONG. THERE WILL BE TWO STAGES OF THE COMPETITION ,CONSISTENCY AND MEASURING FOR RAW DISTANCE .GOOD LUCK ON BEATING ANY OF THEM IN RAW DISTANCE,THEY ARE FREAKS OF NATURE WHEN IT COMES TO HITTING A SOFTBALL AN INCREDIBLY LONG WAY FOR THEIR AGE AS WELL AS ANY AGE GROUP.(OZZIE ACTUALLY OUT DISTANCED LEGENDARY SOFTBALL KING BRUCE MEADE WITH MEADS OWN SOFTBALL BAT AT A HOMERUN HITTING EVENT IN 1990 AT CHAPMAN FIELD SOFTBALL COMPLEX WITNESSED BY HUNDREDS AND CHANNEL 7 NEWS IN FLORIDA WHEN BRUCE CHALLENGED HIM TO A HOMERUN HITTING EXHIBITION . SO MAKE SURE THAT YOU BRING YOUR A GAME FELLAS.

Wasn't there a Seinfeld episode where a guy spoke about himself in the third person- "Jimmy likes this and Jimmy does that" and it was actually Jimmy speaking. I'm pretty sure that the point of the episode was to make fun of someone who spoke of themselves in the third person. Thanks for entertaining us... Donl likes that.

How about another spin on this. Senior softball I believe works with the Wounded Warriors. There are 3 tournaments in the next 4-6 months that are well attended Phoenix, Florida and the Tournament of Champions. Maybe the brothers attend each and have a home run derby with all proceeds going to the Wounded Warriors. Win/Win for everyone. Sounds more productive than posting unproductive stuff.

First, I would like to welcome the Cansecos to senior ball. With that said it appears you are trying to make this game about you. Senior softball welcomes all comers at all levels of play and we are all equal. I don't mean equal in talent or ability. I mean equal in the sense, that we are all players that love the game of baseball/softball. In my 10 years of senior softball playing AA, AAA and Majors. I can honestly say, the players I meet from all over the country have been awesome. There are many gifted athletes and those that may not be as gifted. There are those that hit the weights to maintain a high level of competitiveness on the field. There are those that hit the beers to maintain a high level of competitiveness off the field. Either way everyone plays with all their heart and soul and leave everything out on the field.
The game is bigger than any one person and will survive long after we are all in that great softball field in the sky.
My advise to the Canseco brothers. This isn't the MLB. We have egos but understand we also have limitations do to our age and physical issues over the years. We play hurt, we play hard and for the love of the game not the love of the all mighty dollar. We love our families and our teammates. Well, maybe not always all our teammates, lol. We thank God or whomever people believe in, that we survived another tourney without serious injury or even death. You will learn to love the game again for the reasons you first started playing. Before being corrupted by the contracts and glamour. You will learn you can be competitive and go balls out on the field to win without being a jerk. You will shake hands after games, say good game and mean it.
Again, welcome to the game we all love and please do your best to be a positive addition to our family.

Jose used steroids and gained an athletic edge. Then he wrote a book about his use of steroids and other players use. This resulted in investigations, new tests, and numerous suspensions. All of these actions lessened the use of steroids in sports. For this reason, I give Jose credit and a pat on the back.

Hi Ceres-I have to disagree with one thing that you post. Jose,as a union member, turned in other union members.I do not respect him for that. Obviously the book was written to make him money at the expense of others. That being said, I met Jose and Ozzie at the Villages softball tournament last Oct., and they both were not only fine players on the field, but very nice guys off the field. As I always say to team mates, he who is without error may cast the first softball.

Why do so many guys feel the need to tell the Canseco brothers how to conduct themselves? Have they created a problem for anyone? Doesn't all of senior softball benefit when players of this caliber are playing? I feel that it gives the game a higher level of credibility... just as I did 35 years ago when I'd see Tony Cloniger, Doug Flynn, Jim Northrup, Bill Sudakis, etc. playing.
I've watched the level of senior softball competition increase dramatically over the past 17 years. The 50 M+ finals had teams with line ups that are much deeper than the Dan Smith, Fergies and Sawtre teams that I saw in 1997. When I say deep, I'm referring to the ability to go deep and hit consistently. Yes, I'm fully aware of the new equipment.
I get it that Ozzie was boasting about his and his brother's power. So what? Take a look at a lot of the other posts on here and look for the 'me' or 'I' comments... you need not look far. Did anyone bother to tell those guys to not be so egocentric? If they did it would have monopolized the threads for quite a while.
Steroids? The Canseco brothers are the first guys playing senior softball that have taken PEDs? If you want to think this, suit yourself.
Cheater bats? Let's pretend that this doesn't happen as well (I'm not suggesting that the Canseco brothers have done this).
Why should the Cansecos be held to a higher standard than we place on everyone else?
If Ozzie wants to create a HR Derby, I say 'great'... but I personally would rather watch teams like Sommerville Softball play than watch a HR Derby. I enjoy the team element more than individual skills. There is a reason that the Punt, Pass and Kick Contest doesn't generate as much advertising money as the Super Bowl... but that's just me and how I look at things.

I find it sad that so many guys have to use PEDs & altered equipment to compete in softball. Whatever happened to the good old days when players relied on their natural abilities and hard work?

What a shame that this type of element has gained a foothold in the game. I personally would not support any type of event that allows cheaters and drug users to "promote" softball, I don't care how many HRs they hit or what level they played. What message does this send to the younger generation? Lame sauce.

I accept them into sr ball as another player with talent. May not be with open arms but it's nice that another pair of seniors from different sides of the U.S. can play.
The issue is not the peds, because it won't be solved this way as neither will altered bats or bats that are 'legal' yet haven't made it to open retail market in 5 years.
Playing M+ limits the who and all else your limited to now. But on a good team as he was in Vegas, I hope he had fun at least.
Enjoy and ya all stay healthy.

The answer to the question is the following 5 players based on my 12 years of playing major plus. I am sure there are plenty of others but these are the best in my mind! All of these guys are huge. The best little man with power is Caleb Rabenold.

1) Bob "Wally" Waldyke
2) Hank Garris
3) Mark Martin
4) Brett Kreuger
5) Dale Mayo

Donll, Jose played with God Sports Co. 50 M+ .

I read a lot of " they " and " those guys " above referring to both of the Cansecos although the only Canceso that has posted here was Ozzie. I've never seen a post here by Jose. I'm sure Ozzie didn't want to start off his senior softball playing days by rubbing people the wrong way. I'd like to think he had good intentions and it just came out wrong. These guys should be great for the game and it should create a lot of interest for a while, heck I'd stop and watch them hit.

Swing gave good advice to Ozzie on a different thread , " be humble " ! True true

The better challenge would be USSSA pitching rules with the homerun contestant also having to pitch ten young kids style USSSA strikes to his homerun hitting opponent in a head to head format...

If hat's the challenge...count me in...and for a little more chuckles we should add athe 40+ division...

First round,in a dream matchup, is Andy Purcell against Ozzie!!!

now that would result in one 50 year old walking around in tight shorts;-)

I, for one, am in awe of Jose Canseco. I had the privilege of hitting with him and he hit a few of my GURU softballs 600 feet using a USSSA bat. He didn't want to use his senior bat because he knew it would break.
Here's a guy who has done it all in Major League Baseball and he loves to put his softball pants on and go out and hit softballs, he just loves the game. What other accomplished Major Leaguers do that? They were all in it for the money and when their playing days were over they got lazy and fat like so many of us. Jose and Ozzie go out regularly to practice their softball skills to maintain their prowess.
They are good for our game and give it more recognition.
Yes, the post by Ozzie comes off as bragging a bit but how else to make his challenge credible. I for one would love to see the best hitters in softball compete in a long ball challenge. From what I have seen, and I've just about seen them all over the years, my money would be on Jose.

Count me in the same category with The Wood, Bob Woodruff

A couple of guys from Superior softball were hitting in Vegas before the tournament a year ago and the Canseco brothers showed up to hit. we were amazed at how far Ozzy hit the ball. We thought that he was hitting it about 415 or so. His brother hit next and we witnessed him sending the ball over 550 feet or further...It was amazing.....We actually walked it off and it was closer to 600 feet!!! I have seen some of the greatest hitters in the game hit over the years and never saw anything like that before.

WHO CARES!!? Until softball complexes start having 500 ft fences their hitting it 275 ft. farther than they need to. Last I checked no matter how far a home run is hit it still only counts for 1 run. This game isn't about distance or how far you can hit it. It about which team scores the most runs.

We were hitting on the fields at Warm Springs. The largest field is 300 feet and he was hitting them on the infield of the smaller diamond to the southwest. Go to google earth and measure how far that is.
And the statement, Who cares? Who cares how much weight a weightlifter can lift. Who cares how fast a man can run? To see Jose get loose and then let it fly will be amazed. People were amazed when he hit a softball out of Anaheim stadium, it was an amazing feat. Give Jose his due.

Not sure why the animosity to a player who basically is passing on what he observed, and I have played with this gentlemen and he one of the best high average hitters in the game as well as a excellent pitcher with numerous championships, with integrity with no reason to be nothing but forthrigt. As to the players you mentioned I have played with some of them and against most and none have hit the ball as far as what has been mentioned..... which I could care less about and have no respect for the author of this thread, and I can personally tell you that none of the players you mentioned would act in such a manner that I have witnessed. To answer the original question I would say Bob Woldyke & Vern Hensley are two of the most powerful hitters that I've seen in senior softball today. No doubt there are many others but I admit to being biased since Wally is a former teammate and Vern is a current teammate. After playing against Jose I would definitely say he ranks up there. One he hit against us 2 weeks ago I think is still going!! You could take the middle of their order of any 50 major plus and 55 major plus team and find some pretty powerful hitters. jmho

bud leftfield as a fellow union member you should be embarrassed at how the union threw jose under the bus, they let him take the fall so their brothers could keep making millions.they knew who were taking steroids and let only jose take the fall.as for steroids in softball all we have to do is take a look around many are using them.senior bats are legal steroids.at least jose didn't lie about his use and maintains that steroids taken properly are healthy.why not be healthy.i never meant jose but when i see him he looks healthy.glad to see him promoting senior softball.i have played against many great sluggers whether they were on steroids or not i enjoy playing against them and love watching the bombs being hit.its your choice what you want to do with your body i prefer 12oz curls and deadlifts.

Hi jrhunch-What you say about the MLB players union might be true, but Jose definitely threw some union members under the bus as well. We all know money talks in pro sports. Then when something happens, everyone starts pointing the finger at someone else. As you know, for years the club owners controlled the teams and all the players. Many players held jobs in the off-season to make ends meet. Then Curt Flood and the lawsuits started and the union and free agency took over.I would have liked to think that Jose would have taken the fall without taking others with him,but I guess unless you are in that spot yourself, you wouldn't know what you would do. Also, Jim Galloway was the most powerful hitter I ever saw, and the most powerful batter I ever played against was a lefty batter named Lou Russo.
