Senior Softball League
Our Senior Softball League does not have a draft, each manager is responsible for putting a team together. We have tournament and
rec teams in the same division, we do use an equalizer rule. The equalizer
rule helps, but does not level the playing field, usually the same team (tournament teams) win the league. Any comments on how the draft works in
your senior softball league.

gary you can go 1 of 2 ways.....

sort out the age groups by skill of the players...then draft them blindly out of a hat or such..example..put all the M+/M together and draft those first...then AAA/AA players.....then draft rec players...do this for each age grouping......might want to sort by position also to even it out......at least for pitchers...

or straight out name draft.....this ok if all the coaches know the players...hold a tryout for new guys so all the coaches can see the new guys.....to me this takes way more time as you need a board to watch who has been drafted......

We use the draft in all of our league teams, National (sr bats allowed, American (ASA bats only), Legends and Masters (both allow only ASA bats).
Any new players must participate in tryouts, ie hitting, fielding, throwing and running. All manages in attendance are asked to fill out a "skills" evaluation on all players.
In our National League the last place team picks first, second to the last next, and so forth.
Each season the manages get together and decide how many players the team will freeze (keep). The others are returned to the draft.
This works out well for us.
CK, if you want to hear more details let me know and I will put you in touch with our league director.

The question that CK should have asked is how do you get a league that is over 15 years old to change to a draft league when over 75% of the league likes it the way it is????Suggestion is the board should force the issue but as a board member I feel that it is my reponsibilty to give the members what they want and is still best for the overall league. We as a league had 4 teams finish 1st or 2nd at the worlds in Vegas. Some say we much be doing something right. We have over 35 teams(6 divisions) and 500 plus players so nothing is easy to change.
