Second Home plate for National Tourneys
I am directing this towards the SSUSA staff...was wondering if using a second home plate in the bigger events was ever considered? Had some really weird calls due to the line n I don't want to just blame the umpire...but I believe that this second plate would minimize some of those close confusing calls. Aloha, Fabe

Fabe - The secondary scoring plate is allowed, but not mandated, for SSUSA sanctioned events. The usual determining factor is not the nature of the event in the National Tourney hierarchy, but rather whether or not the individual facility either has or will allow them for competition. We cannot compel the facilities to install them, but we generally use them if they are already available. This will vary from facility to facility in many tournaments. We prefer to avoid using the loose "throw down" type of secondary scoring plate because they can slip and create a safety issue for the base runner.

The scoring line and scoring plate rule is at SSUSA Rulebook §8.10 (page 51) and generally is that the scoring line or plate is treated as a force play situation, with the runner scoring a run if his foot touches the scoring plate OR is down on or down beyond the scoring line before the defensive player has control of the ball while touching the strike mat. Hope this helps.

I agree. I rather see the 2nd home plate. There is always that chance that the runner coming home will miss the plate.

You just take an extra home plate and lay it down, you don't need a permanent 2nd home plate so it has nothing to do with the fields.

As a league we decided to go to the line for safety reasons, on Saturday we start at 9 AM and with a little dampness(dew mostly) that extra plate can get real dangerous for a runner trying to score when you can't slide and you hit that slick plate bad things happen. I've never seen anyone slip on a line but a plate yes.

We had a guy step on and slip on the secondary home plate running in hard that got injured. From a defensive stand point I like the second plate however, from a safety aspect the line is a much better option...

Brought this topic up because over the years some interesting calls have been made that affected the game....such as, the foot was over the line but not yet in contact with the ground. Mahalo for the opinions given, however; we have been playing with bases n plates all our lives! Just thought a plate would assist with making these close force outs at home. Aloha, Fabe
