obstructed base
We had a problem with a call at Saturdays game. Runner on first ran to second and on to third when ball was hit to left field.
The second baseman obstructed the plate and the runner made contact with him and did not touch the bag.
He was called out and there was much controversy about the call.
Please help. !. if there is an obstructed second base can the runner move on to third without touching the bag?

I think you would have to revert back to Rule 10 section 1 in the ASA rule book. because I have looked in all 4 association rule book
ASA
NSA
USSSA
ISA
and none of them covers that play.

But the rule 10 of ASA does say

The plate umpire shall have the authority to make decisions on any situation not specifically covered in the rules..
This is not covered so you would have to live with his decision.

I would hope since the obstruction caused the player to miss the base, that the umpire would call him safe. If not I would have my second baseman to obstruct every runner that came by and get some easy outs.

SSUSA has addressed this issue @ rule 8.6. This states that a runner can miss the base to avoid collision & continue & not be called out. Hard to find but I am sure it's in there.
