May 4, 2015 JT25 Men's 50 54 posts | Outfielder caught a flyball with a first baseman mitt? I was playing in the Cinco De Mayo softball tournament this weekend and one of my teammate's hit a flyball to the outfield and was caught with a first baseman mitt and the umpire call him out and had the outfielder get a legal glove. I don't think that is the right call. I looked in the senior softball rules and a legal catch is a ball caught with a legal glove or hand anything else is as if the ball hit the ground. What should be the rule on that play? |

We had a player back in the 80's that had a Rawlings glove (I can't remember the model number) that closely resembled a mitt but wasn't. It was questioned several times but always ruled to be a glove. |

The fielder in question must change the glove and a second offense is an ejection. |

May 5, 2015 Garocket Men's 55 259 posts | Not sure about Senior softball but ASA Rule states I am almost sure ASA changed the rule about 3 years ago that a mitt can be worn by any player ASA Rule 3-4 A Glove/Mitt may be worn by any player. The dimensions of any glove/mitt used by any fielder shall not exceed the specifications set forth below (see drawing and specifications). (Fast pitch) The Pitcher's glove may be of one solid color or multicolored as long as the color(s) are not the color of the ball being used in the game. NFHS Rule 1-4 Art. 1...Gloves/mitts shall: a. Be a maximum of two colors excluding lacing and manufacturer's logo colors. Lacing shall not be the color of the ball. b. Not be entirely gray, white or optic in color. c. Not have a gray, white or optic colored marking on the outside or inside that gives the appearance of the ball. d. Be permitted to have one American flag not to exceed 2 inches by 3 inches. e. Not be judged as distracting by the umpire. |
May 5, 2015 taits Men's 65 4548 posts | Look at 3.6 or at least it is in the 2010 book. I did not look here on line but should be about same rule. |
May 5, 2015 taits Men's 65 4548 posts | 3.6 is same but added dimensions to glove\mitt. IMO any one should be able to be used anywhere except for a oversised catchers glove. as in baseball. |
May 5, 2015 JT25 Men's 50 54 posts | 3.6 Gloves may be worn by any player, but mitts may be used only by the catcher and first baseman. So if the catch is made with an illegal glove the batter is not out and it is the offensive managers option to accept the result of the play involving the illegal glove or to have the batter return to the plate and resume with the count previous to the hit. The fielder in question must change the glove and a second offense is an ejection. This Should be the ruling but I don't see it in the Senior Softball Rule book for 2015-2016 Season. |

May 5, 2015 Dancer 115 posts | I am curious, even though I have a regular glove, but why would a first baseman's glove give an advantage in the outfield? It seems to me the mechanics is the same, you have to judge where the ball is coming down and close the glove when it hits the pocket or the web. I did catch one bare handed in the outfield once, not because of skill, it was because I over ran the ball and my throwing hand was nearest the ball and I stuck it out there. |
May 5, 2015 txnighttrain 118 posts | I found the definition for illegal catch at 1.34 and then rule 3.6 when a person can use a mitt or glove. I could not find the penalty. Under 8.4(10)C they talk about an illegal catch but don't mention when involves an illegal glove. |
May 6, 2015 B.J. 1104 posts | only 1st baseman and catchers can use a mitt in SSUSA...the batter is placed on 1st base and fielder given an error on the illegal catch |
