Dudley 12" with rattle.
Hey Guys,
I just picked up a used 26oz Dudley 12", my first Senior bat.
Took about 30 tee swings with it last night and it seems to hit about 10 feet further that my Freak12s (USSSA bats).
It feels pretty good to swing, I was thinking I might have seen a little more distance vs my UTRIP bats?

I did notice a fairly obvious rattle to the Dudley, it was advertized as only having 50 cuts on it.
Buying a used Senior bat is a bit of a crapshoot, so I am not complaining, just wondering how much longer
this "baby rattle" might last before it expires?

In the past I have fond that the rattle your hearing is only resin(glue) that they attach the end cap and end load weight with and some has come lose. Probable good to go for a long time.

3 weeks ago, I contacted Dudley because of a rattle that developed in my balanced 27 oz.
I used it starting in a tournament in April that sounded like a pebble. But then in Drifton it got progressively worse and then in Branford sounded like a baby rattle. Only has maybe 300 swings on it. It was a new bat I purchased in Feb.

Hemi, my rattle is only in the handle portion (not the barrel) of the bat so I'm not sure if it would be endcap glue. HP where is your rattle?

That being said, I contacted the dealer I purchased it from and they told me to contact Dudley directly which I did.
First thing they asked for: A COPY OF THE RECEIPT! Which luckily I had saved.
I then shipped it to them mid June. A week later, I get an email saying they received my bat and then last week another email saying that their product development team has inspected my bat and it is now being forwarded to their factory for inspection.

Not sure how long this process will take, as they thanked me for my patience and I appreciated Dudley keeping me updated through the process. Was hoping to have some resolution for next weeks tournament in Syracuse which I highly doubt so its on to Plan B which is to use my Melee or Demarini One.

to be continued at a future date

Ya hemi, that was my first thought (hope) that it was just some cap resin floating around in there.
With the bat advertized as only 50 swings, although it looks a little more weathered than that, that would make the most sense.
The "pebble" seems to roll from the endcap to the handle as you tip the bat.
On a few of my previous UTRIP bats they would eventually develop a rattle after tons of hits...
it usually would not be long after that that the shark tooth would show up and then done!

k, seems like Dudley is doing their best to look after you, I hope you get her back before next weekend.
Syracuse is why I just picked up the Dudley, I will be going down next weekend for my 1st ever SSUSA tourney... looking forward to it!
What team and division will you be playing?

HP, like I said at least I have a plan B regardless of what happens with the Dudley.
But I did like using the Dudley over the other 2 bats.

Playing with the LI Jags in the 60 division.
How about you?

k man,
I am playing with Durham Silver Stix in the 50 division.
There is a good chance you will meet up with some older buddies of mine that are on 2 different
teams in your division... Stefco Silver Stix and Durham Silver Stix.
There is also another team from Ontario going down, the Bandits, but they are playing 55s.

1 more week :)

Rattles are not new to Composite bats and really no big deal.Remove the endcap or if you know of someone that can and simply dump out the material that floating around inside.Replace cap securely (glue)and you're back in buisness.

titan - removing the end cap wouldn't have help my situation as the rattle was in the handle, it stopped where the handle meets the barrel. It's with Dudley so for me its a moot point.

HP - good luck with you rattler and next week in Syracuse.

Question - when I 1st discovered the rattle, one of the guys on my team wanted to try my bat, when he came back, he said you can't use the bat it's not legal with the rattle in it. I used it the rest of the tournament and the next one but was wondering if he was correct. Did I risk having the bat disallowed, say for instance when some umpires pick up the bat and hand it to the next guy.
I looked it up in the rules and didn't seem to find anything of the sort. ??? Yes or No ???

I think most people might consider removing the endcap "tampering" with the bat.
And while the endcap it off you might as well get the Schick razor out as well. ;)

HP POWER that may be your mind set but, with no warranty.Do you suggest that the only recourse is to just throw the bat and 200.00 in the trash? or do we apply self help and get the cap off ,shake out the material and glue the cap back on? Would it be tamppering if the cap flys off on it's own and you glued it bat on or when the knob breaks off and we glue it back on or should we as per your sugestion leave it off because "some might consider it tampering"? It was your input to do "get the razor out" or anything else and again that's your mindset and you're entitled it.

That Schick thing was a joke, hence the ;)
I am hoping (guessing) most umps will not toss a bat for having a rattle sound.
My original question was, with a significant rattle, could this be the beginning of the end.
Hopefully it is as you suggested, just a bit of resin rolling around in there and not some of the inner wall broken off.

If an encap flew off on it's own, I would not think twice about just glue'n it back on.
Forcing the cap off could leave someone open to some unwanted scrutiny.

With the nature off most Senior bats having no warranty we are having to take our chances with the longevity
of these things, but they also retail a third less than most ASA, UTRIP bats.
For me, I will use this rattling bat until an ump says I can't and then it would be a BP bat.

I like playing too much to risk the "chance" of ever being called on a altered bat and getting suspended.

HP- tentative Syracuse is up there.
We are scheduled against your friend with Stefco @ 5 on Friday.

To the SSUSA staff- something doesn't seem right with 70AAA as Jaguars who are playing on the weekend are also scheduled for Monday ???- some other 60's appear to be also

K, Thanks for the heads up on the schedule!
Looks like our 1st game is 11:30 Friday, which means we can drive down Friday morning and do not need to stay over Thursday night.
Our 2nd game Friday is at 3:30, so I may catch some of the 5:oclock game with you guys and Stefco.

HP - we don't play our 1st until 2 but the idea of sitting in a car for 5+ hours and then playing then sitting a game then playing and then checking into the hotel ... well you get the idea so will be headed up Thurs after I play 2 in my local league. Catch you up there and good luck!

HP better check the revision to the Syracuse schedule- team dropped out of your division changing quite a few games.
Looks like you may want to stay over Thursday.

Ya, then they mucked their first try at the revision.
I "think" our schedule is correct now...
Friday @ 11:00am and 2:00pm, then 9:00am Saturday to complete the seeding games.

Follow up to my July 3 posting:
Just received my replacement bat from Dudley via Fedex.
I feel like a kid in a candy store.
Thank you Dudley for handling this efficiently and professionally!
Remember keep your receipt and contact manufacturer if you think there is a defect with their product.
Looking forward to breaking it in and upcoming tournaments.

That's great to hear that Dudley is looking after you k man!

I swung my 12" Dudley all weekend in Syracuse and was VERY impressed with how it hit.
Rattle seems like a non-issue.

I own a few Dudleys and the first one I received in March started rattling after about 150 swings, it now has over a 1000 swings and is the hottest one I own. I wouldn't worry to much about the rattle.
