Tournament Results
To SSUSA staff...in this age of instant news, why does it take this organization so long to post results to the website? A reasonable person might expect the results, for example, from the Western National Championships, to be posted on your site by the day after the tournament. That's right, Monday, the day after completion of the 2nd biggest tournament of the year that we play in. Here it now Thursday, August 13th and still no news, no results, nothing! Self promotion is your answer and you should be doing more that regard. I'm probably missing a human being element or something but seriously, what's the holdup? Your website would be greatly improved if someone could get this information up and on to the site much faster than currently being utilized. I see lots of advertising on your site but not much winner driven promotion, pardon me, participatory promotion. You would do yourselves and your participants a huge service that could only undeniably increase participation in your website. If you would get the tourney results up and on your site asap, new stp, (Sooner Than Possible). I'll be watching this space for some kind of response.

I welcome other player participant comments as well. My belief being that we, as the players, can help shape this website into something that both the SSUSA and it's members can be proud of too.

Dawgbro,

First off, congrats on Wolfpack wining the Western Nationals. I've also relayed my congratulations to your teammate Ken Childress as I'll be playing with his team at the Huntsman Senior Games in October. My team, So Cal 55 will be in Vegas and look forward to competing against you guys.

Now to the issue you've raised. This has always been a bone of contention with many of us in the senior softball community. In some cases, the only tourney results posted are 1st, 2nd, and 3rd with absolutely no detail. Some of us would love to see game detail as a way to scout teams, to see how our competitors are fairing. When a Dave Dowell proclaims that he's the only guy to load this data, I see that as a problem, or as I like to say a single point failure. Certainly not a knock on Dave, just a statement of fact. I would suspect that SSUSA could certainly afford to bring in part time help to do the post tournament data entry work. It would certainly keep the customer base less vocal on this board.

SSUSA, is there a possibility of your tournament bracket files being uploaded as a shared file where each Director would be able to access and update real time? There are certainly business software programs that allow for file sharing. Worth a look...maybe?

Just my two cents.

Just to stir the pot, a few observations if I may:
1. Dave, on your list a daily tasks I see three (3) days of all-day travel. That's like 20 hours of doing nothing around the airport but watching stewardesses (okay, okay you win on that one).
2. This guy, E6 in AZ is a genius if you ask me, in March of 2014 he (I) asked for tourney results and even suggested that the "tourney-masters" take a photo of the completed brackets (with scores) and post them as a PDF file on this website. But that idea kinda cuts your proprietary "TRUMPS/THE ROCK".... well you know what I mean.
3. A five (5) year SSUSA card costs $60, so $12 a year. At 25,000 players that is $300K. This does not include the monies from tourney fees and t-shirt sales. But let's say those money makers pay for the fields, umpires (Hi Carl, hope to see you in Flag.) and what-have-you costs. I did not even mention the fees being raked in by the online merchants that I few every time I logon.
Dave, you need some help and I think the money is in the budget. Hell, SSUSA should hook up some college kids (interns) who are studying Sports Management and pay them zero.
IN conclusion I do want to say, thank you for what you do for these players and myself. If I wasn't messing with you I would be harassing the wife and at $12 a year, you guys are cheaper than the "big d"
Laters.

I have deleted my previous reply on this topic, simply because it was irrelevant and too long! ... Instead, it should have been ...

We (me and our web master/IT guy) are collaborating on converting my custom scheduling and scoring system to a platform, such as Microsoft Excel or Access, that will allow for properly equipped on-site tourney personnel to access and update it, hopefully in a "cloud" environment, without breaching the intellectual property rights of it's author (that would be me) ... The current system runs on an older and commercially unavailable platform, and there is only one copy, mine ...

Hopefully we can get this conversion completed by the start of next Season, but until then, score reporting will be somewhat influenced by other tournament scheduling demands and timing ... There are a couple of upcoming events that are pressing, then I will attack the Westerns and a couple of others that are in progress now ...

I sincerely appreciate all of your suggestions ...

Dave,

Appreciate the efforts you and your IT guy are putting forth in this area. Not sure, but maybe look into Microsoft Sharepoint which I used it in my prior work life. Master files are stored in a central repository, on your site which could be accessed by a limited few for real time updates. Files were usually in Excel or PowerPoint format for our applications, but could be in any other.

In order to maintain the integrity and protection of your IP, the files would remain in your repository in their edited format and be shared on the SSUSA website, possibly as a non-editable .pdf file.

Just thinking on the keyboard here.

In the last 5 plus years i've seen more and more people request online results in a timely manner. What did we all do with ourselves pre internet days? Pre Cell Phone Texting days? I know what I did, I called someone I knew that may have played in the tourney. Or better yet I waited for the Bi Monthly or quarterly Softball West, Softball Today, etc... Loved those magazines back in the day. Still have a few somewhere.

I ask why the urgency of the results? and why do we even care anymore? sheesh all of us have played the game way too long to even care about the end result. I'm happy to get on the hardwood and run around 20 minutes or on the ball field to play a game or two or three.

Unless???????? those that need that gratification and the pat on the back like seeing the results possibly? I've seen that a lot the last decade from 40 - 50 years old, lots of players who never sniffed a good A,B,C, or even D tourney team are now the greatest players on earth into their 40's, 50's, etc..... and probably never won during their pre 40 year old days.

I'm sure i'll get a lot of backlash, but its all good. Won't be the first time i've been lit up on a message board.

No worries Cuervo13 (and thanks) ... We are working on a complete conversion of my scheduling and scoring system that might make it more feasible to provide the information more quickly ... And we appreciate the constructive suggestions above ... It would be wonderful to have a $1 million sponsorship like the PGA Tour does, where every time one of the golfers takes a stroke, the entire leader board updates instantly, but we don't ... We'll do as much as we can to keep improving ... Good luck the rest of this season ...

Dave, I couldn't find any scores, I must not know how to open the correct area. When you put out the seeding games schedule and the elimination bracket, we used to get that format filled in after the tourney with the scores. This allows us to track our competitors. I can't find that info.
Lots of postings from players on results, but very seldom can we get scores.
Thank you.

Here is an idea! When you win a tournament why doesn't the winning team post it on the message board? Everyone will see who won it the day after the tournament and Dave will get the scores to us as soon as possible.
I'll start:
Western Championships: 65 Major
1. Scrap Iron Phiten
2. Enviro-Vac Marauders
3. Stixx

Anyone else?

Cuervo13, for the record, this is my 2nd year in SSUSA. The guys I got lucky enough to fall in with are excellent ballplayers and it's my honor and a privilege to even be a part of Wolfpack Softball. I would go to war for my brothers out there on the diamond. My role with this team is strictly off the bench. I was fortunate enough to have been able to pitch our first game of the tournament, a game we of course won and I'm proud of my contribution. Even getting a bloop single in 3 at bats was a thrill for me. However, that's it. 3 AB'S for the entire tournament for me. I'm not wanting to look at the results and gloat about all of my glorious statistics, rather as a sense of team & familial pride. I'd merely like my friends and relatives see all of the results on a cool website themselves. Nothing more and nothing less. I'd like to thank the SSUSA organization and all of its employees and volunteers for all of their hard work and dedication to our great game. Thanks for everyone's input, it helps lend to a greater understanding of where all parties are coming from. Cuervo13, this Patron shots for you! Good luck!
