Little League World Series Double Elim that Isn't ???
For whatever reason, I've really been intrigued, watching a lot of the Little League World Series on ESPN & ABC past week or so.

What I don't get, is they have this double elimination bracket just like we have in our softball tournaments.

Teams lose a game and then battle back several games through losers bracket, to come back and play the top team still remaining in winners bracket. OK that makes sense, that's how we all play too.

HOWEVER, what I don't get, if the team that comes back through losers bracket beats the winners bracket team, THAT'S IT the team that wins that game is the American Champion---------even though the winners bracket team could have only one loss (if they lose)????

So the team that did the best, won their games in winners bracket to play less games, gets to the final, its one and done, with the winner going to play the international winner.

So in Double Elimination there "could be" two teams with one loss with one getting eliminated. Of course its all possible the team in winners bracket now (Pennsylvania) doesn't lose and advances anyway.

Maybe its too much to ask the kids to play a double header "IF" game if needed tomorrow.

Yet today (FRIDAY) there aren't any games????? To me, play tonight, and an "IF" game tomorrow (if needed) with World Finals Sunday.

I'm sure Saturday/Sunday brings in better TV ratings though????

17Black ... I noticed this a couple years ago and seem to recall an explanation along the lines of: "If the elimination bracket team comes all the way back to beat the winners bracket survivor, they go to the American or International Championship by virtue of a head to head win among the only two teams that have one loss, even if the first loss for the elimination bracket team was between the same two teams" ... I can sort of buy into the theory so long as those two teams didn't split, but it's possible TWICE tomorrow ... Japan dropped Mexico into the International Division Elimination Bracket and Mid-Atlantic did the same to Southwest in the USA Division ... It sure would be a tough pill to swallow if Mexico and/or Southwest win tomorrow ... And I think you are correct about TV driving the scheduling, along with the general detriment to the teams if they actually had "If" games today (Friday) because of the pitch count and days-between-appearances rules to protect young pitchers' arms ... Still a tough one!

DAVE, correct. Pennsylvania beat Texas to knock them into losers bracket already.

So if Texas comes back to beat PA tomorrow, they "split"

Unlike senior softball, (we might play 4-5+ games in a day) I do like the idea of the pitch counts and days off depending on how many you threw the last game, especially with 11-13 year old arms. Playing an "IF" game on a tight schedule could eliminate an entire pitching staff for the World Finals? Especially if they had to play a double header.

State Finals and Regionals already get compacted into a short summer. MAYBE starting this tournament a day earlier (last week) or re-exploring other potential formats would be more fair.

Still I know everybody in the office kitchen, is talking about LITTLE LEAGUE baseball, instead of NFL pre-season, or upcoming college football season, or even Major Leagues (OK we have to route for the Indians around here :( Not much to talk about LOL

I think someone should check those bats of the SC team. A 12 yr old hitting a 381' home run or did I hear wrong. He must of been using a Senior bat.

17Black ... Agreed 101% ... All I know for sure is I'm watching FOUR Little League games over the weekend, which is four MORE than the number of NFL games I'll be tuning in to! ...

Somewhere back in my Little League Managing and board Member memory is telling me that it's single elimination until you win regionals. Then its Double elimination until you get to the final four. Then its winners play for 1st and 2nd and losers play for 3rd and 4th. But that was 35 years ago so I could be mistaken.

Marv19 ... I "think" the current All-Star tournament format allows for some latitude at the "District" level, where there may be a Single Elimination play-in and/or a complete Double Elimination bracket ... It was that way 20 years ago when I did some of the scheduling for those Districts on behalf of Little League in the West ...

At the "Regional" level and above (like "Section" and "State"), I believe those are all now DE format ... The "National Region" finals are a pure DE structure and the eight winners from New England, Great Lakes, Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, Southeast, Southwest, Northwest (including Alaska) and West (including Hawaii) are the teams that advance to Williamsport in the USA division ... Same is true for the International section ...

Dave, You're information is most likely spot on. We never made it past two rounds in Southern California and that was when my son was 12. He's 46 so its been a while. Have a great weekend.

Tuning in here a little late......

LLWS & Regionals have always been Single Elimination in Championships Rounds.......The LLWS, leaves Fridays open for Rain delays though the course of the week for make up games and allows both teams to have a day off or two. Last year my Sons Team From NV, lost in The USA Championship Game, everyone asked the same question, why no "If Game" well, its all about the Money, and by then most teams pitching is spent!

FYI: The Las Vegas Team was declared The USA LLWS Champs, due to The Chicago Team, that beat us, were caught using players outside of its Boundaries, which once again, parents being the culprit, win at all cost! Despite losing in the final game, LLWS Stripped JRW of The Championship Months after and awarded The Las Vegas Mountain Ridge Little League, The USA Championship. Regardless of all of that, we value and cherish all of the memories and life experiences through it all, my son had the Greatest time of his life!
