Question regarding Senior Recreation Leagues
Just wondering if many senior rec leagues around the country allow the use of 1.21 bpf bats or are they restricted? Also, another question is at what age do senior rec leagues typically begin? Thanks!

Our league in Richardson, TX allows 1.21 bats. Starts at 50 (with maybe a provision for 1 or 2 45+ on each team). Pretty dangerous combination since all ages play in the same division (we have some 50 and 80 year olds). We do use a screen for the pitcher, although I have yet to see one get behind it.

San Antonio Seniors league(SASSL) allows all senior bats and we start will a 40 Division same as SSUSA. 40 Division voted that any ball hit up the middle(Thru pitchers box) is a automatic out. Seems to work for them. Very little balls towards pitchers. We have separate division by age 40+, 50+, 60-65 combined Saturday League and a 70-75 Division.

In the Milwaukee Wi area we have 6 senior leagues. 5 leagues start at 55, other at 65. All Leagues allow the 1.21bpf bats, BUT, all leagues play with the "Clincher" softball. We also have a fall league with same restrictions.

Suffolk County LI our senior league starts at 60 ( can actually have 59's that turn 60 in calendar year)
No composite bats, double wall or seniors softball bats allowed. Most guys used the RawSteel/White Steel which are no longer in production so guys are always asking what bat that's out there is any good. Ball is a 40 core ball so nobody is even reaching the 300 foot fences. Pitchers may use a pitching screen, it is optional.

Our CSSA (Cherokee County Senior Softball Assoc) allows senior bats only in our National League. Age begins at 50. Homeruns are 5 then one up. Those hit over 5 before the opposition gets 5 are walks. Balls are Baden Fires. Pitching screen is now mandatory.
Our American, Masters, Legends and Monday morning division only allow ASA bats. ASA ONLY bats ARE allowed. A pitcher's screen was used this spring, now no screen is used.

Thanks for the responses. It sounds like most leagues don't have 40+ players playing with 60-70+ year old players.

I believe that I'm the oldest player in our National League. I'll be 66 in September. I plan on remaining there for quite a few more seasons or as long as I can compete competitively.

We have three leagues in this area of northern California south of San Francisco.

The night league has a 50 minimum age, four teams, and all senior bats are allowed. However, the league voted to return to single walls to avoid having too many balls clear the fence, thus irritating neighbors. Very few players in this league over 60.

One day league has four teams, and again age minimum of 50, but integrates players all the way up and into their 80s. This league has a single wall only rule; double walls allowed for 70 and over; senior composites allowed for 75+. Mandated screen for pitchers.

The other day league also has four teams and the same rules as above. Some players participate in all three leagues.

Just my opinion as a 50's Major player and long time umpire in many different organizations... but I don't feel you should have 40+ or even 50+ players playing together with 60/70+ players in the same league if it can be avoided. I know many times the numbers dictate they have to be mixed in together to have a league...and I'm also not saying they're not many 60/70 year olds who can't play (talent wise) with the younger seniors. (I know many older seniors who play in all age groups. In most cases, the older gentlemen know and respect the game a little more.) I'm speaking more about safety. Now I know if you can play, you can play, period. But the ball is simply "hotter" coming off a 40+ hitter's bat (especially with a senior bat) and generally speaking our reflexes and reaction times tend to slow down as we get older. We have 3 or 4 65+ players who play on our 50's team on league nights. (They play, not because we are short people, but because they want to play and they can hold their own.) I realize every player who plays is at risk...even still, I cringe a little inside when line shots are hit their way in the infield. Now it could be just me worrying too much...because we haven't had a major incident as of yet. Still....it concerns me.

screen's are the smartest addition as far as safety that softball god's have ever come up with.If you want all pitcher's to stay behind screen which(that's what they are there far)there's several rule's to put in place. dead ball hit all runner's advance one base.warning to pitcher,or just quit fooling around and if pitcher come's out from behind screen before batter has hit ball inning ending hit up to 5 run's given to team batting. then if it's open inning give 5 run's to team batting clear bases and continue having that team bat until they have made three out's

The vast majority, if not all, in our National League like our rule, if you hit the screen it's a foul ball.
The actual rule doesn't state what the penalty is if you don't stay behind the screen so I stay behind it only for the big hitter that tend to hit to center.
The American League (ASA bats) did away with the screen this fall because their pitcher were required to stay behind the screen, forbidden to field the ball. First offense was a warning, second offense he would be removed from pitching.
In our game last night while I was pitching I had none hit the screen and two grounders hit within 10" of the screen, both fielded without problems.

In our NW WA league we toyed around with requiring the screen this summer, but then decided to make it optional. Some pitchers used it, but most didn't. When the screen was hit with a batted ball it was simply a foul. If the screen is not used, a mask is required. Our age limit is 55. U-trip bats for all, except those players 70 & over can use Senior Bats. We also struggle with the age and skills gap issue for safety reasons. Just crossing our fingers thus far while enjoying time on the diamonds.

Here in Prescott Az we use 1.21 bats with Trump Stote balls. This year we lowered the age requirements to 45. We only have a few kids playing but expect more next season..We did have a few serious injuries this season and are talking about changing the ball...We do not use screens but masks are mandatory for pitchers..

Ventura County/Southern California: bat usage restricted by the cities:

Oxnard requires single wall bats. Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley, Camarillo, Ventura all
require bats stamped with ASA sticker. No tournament bats allowed.

We did modify our Tuesday league to allow 80's to use U2's.

We have a four team 70+ league on Monday mornings. A four team 60+ league on Monday
nights (April thru August). A 60+ (with two 55+) league with six teams on Tuesdays.
A four team 50+ league(majority tournament players)and a 50+ league with five teams
(mostly rec players) on Wednesday and a five team 65+ league on Thursdays with five
teams.

All use the Trump 375/44 ball.
