Las Vegas World Tournament automatic seating
I know this has been kicked around before but to automatically say the East Coast Champion and the West Coast Champion are the #1 and #2 seeds is wrong. There are other parts of this great Country! I feel the format should be changed. In our division the #1 and #2 teams did not earn their seeds. If the teams are that good they should be able to earn their spots besides the perks they get for being a National Champion. Which is also a question National Champion????

Lumpy ... Just for clarification, "seating" is what you find in a theater, and "seeding" is what you find in an elimination bracket ... However, here is the quick rationale for you ...

• The East vs. West game is NOT a randomly generated seeding game, like all others ... It is by design, matching two specific teams that were champions in the Eastern (Raleigh) and Western (Sacramento) National Championships tournaments ...
• The game is a guaranteed 7-inning game and is NOT on the timer ... This can adversely affect tie-breakers for the two teams involved, specifically the "aggregate runs allowed" criteria ... In Phoenix in 2011, the 50-AAA USA Game went nine innings, with a final score of 30-26 ... The team that WON the game was seeded #9 (LOWEST of the nine unbeaten teams in pool play) and the loser also lost their other seeding game and was seeded dead LAST (#29 of 29 teams) in the bracket because of the "aggregate runs allowed" tie-breaker ... This was an unfair result that came out of a pre-arranged game played under different rules than the rest of the seeding pool play ...
• Matching two theoretically stronger teams, and ensuring one of them takes a loss, is also unfair ... They both could well have been 2-0 with randomly generated opponents ...

However, if there is NO USA Game, there is also no guaranteed seeding position ... An Eastern or Western Champion without a USA Game opponent from the other side of the country seeds within the entire group and receives no preferential placement ... They play where they seed conventionally ...

It is apparent you do not agree with us on this, but there is likely NO chance this policy will change in the foreseeable future ...

Dave I'am well aware that seeding is what you do in a farm field. You also put stuff on it to make it grow if you know what I mean. I'm just saying there is a Midwest Champion, a Northern Champion and etc. Why preferential treatment to parts of the Country?

The Eastern and Western National Championships are a step above each of the events you mentioned (along with all of the other TOC QUALIFIERS) ... Those two events require a "qualified roster" in order to compete ... That means a roster from ANY other prior SSUSA sanctioned event ... The Eastern's and Western's are analogous to the "Semi-Finals" before the World Masters Championships ... As such, their Champions have earned a higher level of accomplishment by winning a more significant event ... THAT is their distinction, and the reward is playing in the USA National Championship Game for the chance to earn the overall #1 and #2 seeds ...

Dave, I agree with the recent change to seed the winners of East Coast and West Coast high into the brackets. It is a good incentive for those two winners to come to Vegas, not to mention try their best to win the respective "semi-final" tournaments. What is disappointing is to win one of those tournaments and not have the other Coast team show up. In that case, I'm not sure that randomly seeding the frustrated coast champion is the wisest approach. I would still seed them first in recognition of their accomplishment. Can make a good difference to be top seed in a hot weather tournament with uneven brackets. If other teams don't like it, they can try to win either East or West tournaments.

Omar ... You have nailed the "dilemma" about a walk-over National Championship ... Simply, it's not their fault the other side didn't make it ... I suspect this may be an agenda item at the Rules Committee, even though it is inconsistent with some of the reasons for the current structure, like the fact it's not a random match-up, the 7-inning format, etc. ... There may be a better fine tuning that can be done and make some sense ... Thanks for your input ...

Dave, why not add the Northern and Southern champions to the mix and east- west, north -south play, then two winners and two losers play for a true champion, with seeds 1-4 already settled, rewarded for playing in the qualifiers and winning the e-w-n-s tourneys. Rabbit

Rabbit ... That would require changing the nature of (any) other simple Qualifier to being a qualified roster event ... And then, for sake of discussion, the NE, NW, SE, MW (and all other compass points) would be clamoring "..us too!.." ... Right now the Eastern & Western National Championships are the theoretical "semi-finals" ... It's unlikely to change ...

Dave, could a team be the only team in that Division in the East or West and basically buy their #1 or 2 seed?

NOPE! ... The #1-2 scenario applies ONLY if there is a USA game actually played and only in brackets of five (5) or more teams ... If those criteria are not met, an Eastern or WWstern champion participates in the seeding pool and is assigned base on their performance in those games ... Top seeds are not for sale ...
