illegally batted ball

7.6 • BATTER IS OUT E. When the batter bunts or chops the ball, or does not take a full swing when deliberately hitting a pitched ball. can an illegally batted ball be called on a ball that rolls foul?

YES ... The out is imposed for the attempt to bat the ball in that manner, and the end result of where that ball ends up is irrelevant.

Didn't know about the "full swing" part of the rule. There is a fair share of guys that don't take a full cut, a lot just dumping the ball to the opposite field. Is this ever called? Is this an appeal or is the ump supposed to call it as it happens?

We had a left hand batter with great speed often take a half or three quarter swing and hit the ball DOWN THE THIRD BASELINE and beat it out if there were no runners on base. In all of the ten or twelve years he played , he was only called out one time for the chop or bunt rule. It was a half swing not really a chop or bunt. Opposing teams never appealed the play.

I don't think the rule means you have to swing from the heels...I've seen many players just dump the ball over the infield. I've done it many times myself. I call it "place hitting".

larry your right about the swing speed......it just has to be a full swing....cuda....he most likely should of been called out for his half swing.......and the ump should be calling it as soon as it happens.......now if he is just swinging slowly...that is good to go....i will slow swing to go opposite field for the dump hit.....i just have to make sure it is full....

Bob, full swing is the length of the swing, not the speed and strength of it?
There are a lot of guys that only swing with about 1/2 strength/speed but the bat has normal travel length and there is follow through past contact, but the ball is actually being just dumped usually the opposite way..........your saying that's OK? What does the ump say?

yes robbie....as long as the swing is full.....doesn't matter how fast they swing.....there is no rule on how fast you need to swing....just no half or bunt style swings.....and i'll tell ya....those guys who can change their swing speed are very hard to defense....

Agreed. I was confused on the meaning of "full" swing. Think I got it now, thanks. Hope all's well in Texas with you.

Jonsey, any bunt, chop or not taking a full swing that results in a foul ball is a dead ball out. It's an umpire judgement.
Mad Dog is correct. There is no rule that states a swing must be a certain speed.

Whether a ball is hit with a full swing, half swing, or 3/4 swing, mostly comes into play if the ball is hit on the ground. If the ball is hit in the air in front of the infield, then the batter could be called out too. If the ball is hit in the air over the infield, it does not matter how you hit the ball.

The only thing above that I did not know was that you could be called out on a foul ball not taking a full swing. You learn something every day, no matter how old you get.
