ASA Bats
What is the best ASA approved bat going today? I had to start playing in a day league with geriatric babies who think the ASA Miken Ultra that came out in 2013 is too hot, so they banned it.

I played a few years back, but I couldn't handle all the bickering and arguing. Beginning to wonder if I want to play all now.

Anyway....................thanks in advance.

The rules say .52/300. However, their minutes from a meeting say .44/375.

Believe me, when I say these people are anal to the max.

I thought all the new ASA bats were tested using the .52/300.

All the newer bats are around $250.00 to $300.00. I have found some of the older models fairly reasonable.

It is beyond me when one bat is banned, and all the others are okay for use.

Here is a link to their website. The minutes of Nov. 2014 say .44/375, and the rules say 52/300.

FYI ~ I have to play in the B division now. Two teams in the A division have desolved. My team decided to move down to the B division.

The Ultra has been banned in ASA since a few months after it came out and that is why the first ones have the ASA stamp on them and the rest don't.

If they are the 52's we have had very good results from the Miken Freak52. They now make a balanced and a end load one. Overall IMO most of the new bats for the 52's perform well and just depends on which one you feel comfortable with. You should be able to find 1 or 2 yr old new ones for $175-200.

If they are using the 44's then you may want to stay away form the new stamp ASA bats. They perform very well but there is a question of durability with the thinner walls.

I just got a Jeff Hall Legit HD52 with the extra .5 end load which shows good promise but haven't used it enough to judge it yet.

wayne...what fred says.......ASA bats with the 2000,2004 and the new 2012 or is it 2013 stamps are good to go for ASA...they do have a few exceptions......but basically that is it.....44 ball use the older bats.....52 ball use any bat....

Fred S,

All bats MUST have the ASA certification on it. Makes little sense to me since U-Trip and ASA have basically gone their separate ways.

Thanks, Fred S. I'm putting a hard negotiating deal on eBay for a used Freak 98. He wanted a $150.00. I offered $85.00. He counter offered $140.00. I counter offered $100.00. Guess we'll see who blinks first. Bet he comes down to $125.00..........Let me call a buddy of mine who knows more about these bats!

@neck10 ~ DeMirini is too proud of their bats, and I've never heard people talk about them.........at least in favorable terms.

Have a good season, guys. Never know when it might be your last rodeo!!!!

Fred S , I believe he is referring to the ASA only Miken Utra 750X which came out in 2013. I own one and there is no way that bat should be banned, it is good but I have swung much hotter. ASA bats for 2013 and beyond are made for the .52/300 ball, and hitting with a 44/375 will have an effect on durability. From what I have been reading Demarini is the king of ASA. Personally I don't care for the feel of Demarinis so I use an Easton L6 or my Derby Boys 275 for my ASA league. IMO I would go with an Easton or Combat Derby Boy because they can be had for under $100 with warranty and will perform well. Comes down to your preference 1 or 2 piece, balance or End load. I would not pay any more than $100 for a Freak98, but that's just me.

Here is a list of the bats that were just banned on 1-22-2016.

The Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA)/USA Softball, the National Governing Body of Softball in the United States, in working with Easton Baseball/Softball Inc. (Easton), announced today that Easton is voluntarily removing the following softball bat models from the ASA/USA list of certified bats: SCN1, SCN11BH, SCN1B, SCN2B, SCN3, SCN4B, SCN5, SCN5B, SCN6B, SCN7, SCN7B, SCN8, SCN8B, SCN9, SCX14, SCX14B, SCX24B, AND SCX3.

ju25. Your right missed the 2013. Why would they pick that one? I would guess because it says Ultra and they don't know the difference.

I didn't buy the Freak 98. Let him keep if he is so proud of his "used" bat. This is from their minutes from a meeting:

There are only 2 bats not approved by the ASA for senior play. They are the Miken MSU Ultra and the Miken MSUM Ultra Maxload. All bats marked with an appropriate ASA logo, or [improper conjunction used by them] have BPF 1.21 or less (1.20) stamped on them are legal bats.

My bat is the white Ultra that came out in 2013. It has no marking as to what they are calling MSU or MSUM. This bat doesn't perform anything like a 1.21.

The way they worded their rule, the last sentence implies that a bat just have an "appropriate" ASA logo on it.......mine done's........."OR" a bat must have a 1.21 or less stamped on them.

Maybe I should go to Earl Schieb and get my Ultra II painted purple with an ASA sticker screened on?

Wayne, I got one of those Miken ultras in 2013. Found it to be not that great a bat. I sold it. If you want a good used bat for ASA ,look on eBay for the Miken ultra750 max load. It is the green one from 2014'not the new one. If you want a new bat for a decent price, check out cheap bats.com.

MSU is the Gray Ultra 1 and MSUM is the Gray Ultra 1 maxload, these bats are banned in SS. Your bat has an ASA stamp on it and is model# SOULTA and therefore should be legal. My teammates love that bat, as for me I have the 2014 maxload SULTMA and , like I said before prefer my Combat Derby Boys or Easton L6. According to what you posted almost any bat except the Original Miken Ultra BAL/Maxload is legal, so you should be able to swing your UII or any Senior, USSSA, or ASA bat.

1.21 bats are for division A only. They just can't sentence structure very well.

@Mannjo ~ I can't swing an end load. Too unnatural for me. I have hit some with mine. It really still needs to be broken in. Think Imma gonna use it until they tell me not to.

They are going to us 52/300 balls.

Thanks, guys. All the info was very helpful. Stay healthy and have a great season.

Picture of the bat I will be using.

wayne...1.21 or 1.20 are the same......bats before approx 2008 or close to it are 1.20 tested with a 47-500 ball.....the 1.21 are tested with the 44-375 ball...so the tested bats with either of these numbers are suppose to be the same performance.....no difference...so i don't understand why only the one div gets to use the 1.21 bats.......

Joel,
Your statement that USSSA bats have always been hotter than ASA bats USED to be true....until a couple of years ago when ASA changed their balls and bat testing specs. Currently, Mikens Freak52, Freak Black, and DC41 are excellent examples of three of the best ASA bats out there that will rival usssa bat performance when they are new. Eventually, both types of composites will closely resemble each other once they reach their high performance levels. If you like even more end loads, DeMarini Flipper and Juggernut are excellent choices as well. Those five are tops right now....don't forget, USSSA and ASA REQUIRE different association stamps for bats used in their events. There are some bats that have both stamps on them as they meet both standards but they lag behind most of their lives in comparison to the bats I mentioned above. If you or anyone else has questions feel, free to call anytime.

Mad Dog,

We have run through bases and use 11 fielders. Some of those guys are so brittle, I'm sure one of them would faint if a ball off a senior bat came buzzing past them.

guys what alan said.....wayne really.....run thru to me gets people hurt..and if they play tourney ball it makes for bad habits....also 11 fielders suck for any div below 70's as far as i'm concerned....

mad dog, I have been playing in a rec league that has a run through rule for more than ten years. Our players range from 50 to early 90s. Having a run through has saved untold number of knees of over-65 players when coming to an abrupt stop at second or third and sliding is even more dangerous for the older players. And as far as collisions, we have about 2 or 3 significant collisions a year in our 120-140 games we play. Significant in that they could result in injury (but don't always). In my 80 or so tournament games I play each year, we have about one incident per tournament or about 16 per year. I think run through is the safer way to go.

I do agree that it makes for bad habits when it comes to tourney play. Early on, I ran through once or twice and was trapped off second or third, but I haven't had that mental lapse for many, many years.

omar....the fielder(mostly 2b,and ss) gets put at risk more i think.....as when the runner goes thru the base they can catch the fielders throwing arm and such...as i seen they don't seem to want to avoid the fielder...at least when i used to play out there in the norcal tourney's......

mad dog, maybe we have mellowed in norcal since you terrorized the tourney circuit back in the day.:=) For the most part, it is academic as almost all norcal tournaments now disallow run through. Wish it would return as an option since it still has some positive advantages and my experience is that there are far fewer collisions with run through. I agree there is always a runner who might "accidentally" bump the fielder's throwing arm, but those kind of players cause other harm as well in running the base paths.

It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't piss and moan about which way the runner ran in relation as to where the thrown came from. They are like plays at first and home. All you have to do is catch the ball while touching the base.

ju25,

I sent your list of the newly banned bats to the league president. They banned each of the Easton bats. They didn't really have much choice.

Probably gonna be some unhappy campers.

I know everyone has a preference as to bat characteristics so my opinion will mean nothing to many reading this, but the DeMarini Flipper is the hottest ASA bat for the 52/300 balls. In my area we have one really big ASA tournament a year. The past two years they hit the 52/300 ball. Year one players were swinging several brands of bats on Friday night and Saturday morning. By Saturday afternoon teams were passing down the Flipper from one batter to the next. By Sunday all four teams left had nothing but the Flipper and a Miken 750X in the batters box. The 750X was the only 30 oz. players could find. No one had a heavy DeMarini. The guys that continued to use the Miken were not hitting it nearly as far or hard as the Flipper and they were the players that usually out hit everyone. Year Two the Flipper was the bat of choice for over 90% and the final four teams on Sunday used nothing but the Flipper. You could not compete without a Flipper. Just what I've witnessed locally.
