2016 melee
We hit the balanced Melee today in Houston. Temp. 70 44x375 Trump. I am 70 plus player .Ball traveled well. The other hitters were 60 major plus. They started launching omg home runs out of the wrapper..This bat is a keeper in your bag. We will hit the end load when the rain lets up.

JR - we appreciate your info and good to hear from the Senior players.

Just to clear up some info and get the correct information surrounding the Adidas Melee2 Senior Softball Bat.

This bat continues in the tradition of the original Melee (Reebok-sister company of Adidas) Its made out of the same mold, same end weights but with added new technologies. When doing the tests last year we went thru 6 different proto-types to get the right mix of performance & durability.

When Adidas R&D team started working with Taylormade Golf (Adidas Company) on a line of Baseball bats, they started to apply some of the golf technology into the Senior Softball Bat. We told the R&D team if we can get a bat that will help swing the bat faster - which in turn will make the ball go farther and quicker thats what we need, thats what happened with the new & improved Melee2. Also with the added technology weve increased the sweet spot of the bat.

This bat is exclusive to Suncoast and its reps & partners. But when we got the demo bats in I reached out to non-affiliated Sr players like Conway Waddy, Steve Imlay & many others. We wanted an unbiased opinion and after hearing that Steve Imlay broke the org melees in less than 100 swings, we had to get a bat in his hands. Watching Conway Waddy in Vegas playing in the 65 Major + division, Pitching, Hitting (3 games didnt make an out) and running he looked like 35 years old on the field. We searched him out to get a demo out to him.

This is just some info on the Melee2 bat.

Just Curious

Is it possible that the Adidas Melee just a Reebok Melee with a different paint job?

How can you tell the difference?

Very good ?

No, and you'll tell on your first swing. Without going into to much info on the bat. This is the 2nd generation of the melee with the advanced technology. It swings faster with more flex then the org melee.

Its not a repainted melee.

Conway finished the entire tourney (6 games) with a ob% of 1.000... he also played 60 M the previous weekend and made but one out in 20+ ABs... and led the 2 teams in HRs and RBIs... and played SS & P and other key positions.
No one works harder at 'being the best he can be' than Conway. But it's his team attitude that is his best attribute.
I'm looking forward to seeing the Melee 2... particularly in Conway's hands.

You could hand Conway a broom and he could hit like that but your right.... its who he is that makes him special

Think this bat might help me or is retirement the only answer?

I couldnt agree with you more. Conway Waddy stood out to me so much I asked a director that was near me, did u check his date of birth? He said "Thats Conway - hes a player"

Talked with him in Vegas - he is a great guy & very humble. Have a pic with him & Bobby Davis.

He didnt tell me he made no outs in 6 games. Awesome.

I hit a new Adidas Melee 2 a few weeks ago in florida...after 5 swings, I said "Yup, its as good as my reebok"....just glad that Melees will be available again because when reebok stopped, the world almost stopped....not quite, but finding a 26 ounce balanced Reebok was like searching for Bigfoot.....I think I got the LAST one in the world a few months ago...lol

bkb555,

Glad to hear your feedback and testimonial. When we sent the demos out I told everybody "Let me know what you think?" Didnt want to influence them at all.

Its crazy I went on Ebay and saw the old Melees selling for as much as $400. I was shocked. We ran out of the Reebok Melees last May.

Glad it's performing.. I will say this, let's wait until the 40s and 50s start putting some swings on this bat and see how long it last.. I was swinging Melee only for 3 years until the Dudleys arrived.. It would be hard to get the Dudley out of my hands at this point.. I used to get 200 swings out a Melee if I was lucky.. Dudleys are going 800 swings by friends of mine with as much pop as any Melee..

swing for the fences,

Good question, when doing the testing with the prototypes we used our Suncoast 40s team to do the hitting. We didn't break the last prototype and has over 1k swings.

For Informational purposes: This bat was designed to follow in the line of the original Melee - but is def better in performance & durability. With the added Taylormade technology weve achieved that and have the bat swing faster.

For all kinds of bats it depends on the hitter. If you cut the ball you will get more swings out of the bat. If u hit it square youll get a limited amount of swings.

Hopefully that gave you a little more insight with out breaking any rules on this message board.

Thanks Lee,
The reebok melee has always been popular here.
It's good to hear that the new adidas flavors will old guys another good option for our bat fix.

You have mentioned ,a couple of times , that the new bats have technology that allows them to swing 'faster' than in the past.
I'm assuming that you are not claiming some new form of drag reduction for bats.
So that typically implies that the adidas has reduced the moment of inertia or swing weight compared to the reebok.
Have the balance points for a given weight changed by much?
Would a prospective hitter consider moving up in weight or going from balanced to end loaded to get the same feel as a comparable reebok?

When do you think the new melees will start showing up for the regular folks?

Bill

Just finished my second group of hitting the new Melee. We had a 20EL and a 27 bal. bat. The balanced 27 broke in about 70 swings and hit some mean line drives and some bombs. The End Load 27 oz bat took about 100 swings to come alive and was hotter than any Reebok that several players had there to compare the new to the old.
Will have the 2 demo in Montgomery the 17th of March if anyone wants to swing the new Melee.

Bruster, Bill & Don,

Thanks for the added testimonials.

Bill - same mold as the reebok, only the composite has been upgraded from the original melee. So no new drag technology, but enhanced composite to allow more flex that speeds up the bat. That really speeds your hands up. Id recommend to stay with your bat weight but take a smoother swing with the bat till you get use to the bat.

Bill to your questions no changes in balance points & now would be the answer to your last question.

Don - the bat weights come in a 25, 26, 27, 28 & 30ou weights. I think u had a typo.

Look forward to seeing you on the field.

Xavier - we appreciate your input. Theyre has been some bats with a line where the decal comes together. Weve also noticed some straight lines (ie stress cracks on the paint outer layer) But not noticing the spider webbing or paint chipping off the bats like the org Reebok Melee.

We have over 100+ bats all over the country, that have been hit over the last 30 days. Currently there are 2 bats that are broken, one around 700 & one around 400. We have 12 bats that I know that have over 1k swings on them.

Dale Mayo from Indiana, hit the bat with a lot of the OKI guys and wailed on the bat. I asked them to not baby it, but to hit it and let me know how many swings they get on it. They hit the bat over 2 weekends in Feb in Indiana which is not as warm as FL. I was hoping for over 500 swings and they got almost 700 on it. Dale, Vern Hensley and others are big Major+ guys and they were getting much more distance then the org Melee.

For Informational purposes only: This bat was made to the same tradition of the Org Melee. With this 2nd Generation Melee we vastly improved the performance and increased the durability of the Melee 2.

This is all the feedback that I'm getting from the field. Well get you the info that we can share within the guidelines of this website.

I have also been hitting the new Adidas 26 oz balance bat for the last two weeks. I literally took off the shrink-wrap and hit a line drive HR on the first swing. After the bat had about 60 swings on it, I compared it my Dudley 26oz balance "gamer" bat. Hitting a variety of 44/375 and 52/300 balls, both bats had about the same distance and exit speed off the bat. Because the Adidas bat was not yet broken it, the Dudley's sweet spot and feel was still superior.

I now have about 140 swings on it and I can feel the barrel opening up and the sweet spot increasing. Also, unlike the Rebook Melee, the barrel so far has no paint chips or stress marks.

The one comment I have heard from several other players who have hit this bat is that they feel it swings light. Since I have not yet weighed the bat, I am not sure if the bat is indeed light or if that is just part of the feel of the bat.

I hope that the weather stays nice and I can use it in the Nor Cal tourney this week.

Two responses, I still have a few Reebok Melee Legends in my inventory in Colorado. I have red and yellow.

I have the Melee2 models in Ocala, Florida and would be happy to meet with you to hit. A few guys who play in Ocala have tried both models and so far, everyone has spoken positively about their performance and these are 50-74 players.

I appreciate all of the responses and emails on questions on the bat. This is just informational info on the new melee.

The Melee2 was totally designed against the original melee. Not made to copy any other bat. You'll soon see the melee 2 bats on the field very soon. You can judge for yourself.

Xavier if your really big super strong major+ thats hits the ball indoors, hits the ball square, than maybe this bat is not for you. But in my opinion thats not the typical senior player. The typical senior player doesnt swing 1+ ounce endloads, they swing bats that they can control and hit well. Thats what our whole intention with this Melee 2. To better the org melee and through the technical engineering aspects of the Melee 2 - Adidas has def done that.

Weve received compliments from almost everybody that has swung the bat. The only comment that is real common is that the bat swings fast. Thats an adjustment you'll make just like swinging any new bat and swinging a 12" bat.

Like when we sent the 100+ demos out to all over the country, hit it and form your own opinion.

Good Luck to all the teams this weekend.

Xavier, I don't know Lee personally, but I did not read his post the same way you did. Hitting indoors usually means you hit harder balls (IMO), anybody that hits the ball square and does not cut the ball will break more bats(webbie and Kenard Horsely), big super strong M+(not really a slam but observation). I have no dog in this flight and have not swung the Adidas, yet.

I got to hit a NIW M2 26oz EL today and this bat by far is one of the best in the Dudley, Bigcat and the Miken 2 pc. UII range. And.., since I've swung the OG grey UII. For those in the questioning mode, it's nowhere near the Rebook's version. I hit this bat with the NIW still on it.

It started to open up right at about the 60 hits range. We used the Evil BP, X-Rocks and the Team 1 balls. The balls were flying long and hard. This bat just changed my mind about the current Sr. bats, even though I have 2 Dudleys and 2 of the latest 2pc Miken UII. It was very silly hitting the balls with this model bat. My concern is.., How long can it last if its this hot NIW..?

So that, I can make up my mind, whether I get a 27 or 26oz EL... great bat Trotter..

and like my buddy Mikey says, I have NO skin in the game with this model bat.:)

I have used the New Adidas Melee and the New Rocket Launcher. Personally if I had my choice I would use the Melee. The Melee swings much easier than the Launcher. The ball jumps off the Melee just like the Ultra 2. The difference is, with the Ultra 2, you'll be lucky to get 100 swings before it breaks. We had over 1600 swings on the Melee before it broke. The Combat Rocket Launcher is trying hard to make a great bat. But it's NOT there yet. From what I was told, The RL is on its 3rd try in a year to making this bat great. Melee is better. From what I've read about the RL, it states it has SPIN TECHNOLOGY. Dudley Bats have the spin technology. In my opinion, I have NOT found the RL to have such technology. I will say, the White League Rocket Launcher is a real good bat (Highly Recommended). The League bat does have a warranty. But the price they want for it is WAY WAY to high. Do you really want to spend $300 for a bat? They'd sell a lot more if the price was dropped by $75.00

Capt Kirk, I tested the 25EL Adidas this week. I dropped down from a 27B Adidas. In my particular case, I was hitting ahead of the ball and hitting foul but hard shots. I plan to hit 80 balls today off a tee with my 27B. If you find that you are hitting ahead of the ball try moving up in the box a bit and adjust your swing. I have to be more patient and you may have to be as well. It will be worth it.

Yesterday I was taking comparison bat speed readings on 2 Adidas Melee 2 end load bats. One was the 25 ounce and the other was the 28 ounce. I took 5 practice swings then took 8 swings on the meter with each bat. I averaged the metered swings. On average I was getting 77 mph with the 25 ounce bat. I was averaging 75 mph with the 28 ounce version. While this is not the most scientific test ever conducted, it does give a good idea what to expect when comparing bat speeds. It's a toss up between the lighter, faster 25 ounce bat or the heavier, slightly slower 28 ounce bat. In the end it's going to be what feels best to each individual. The "ball exit speed" test would be a more accurate test as to which bat to chose.

It is also important to see where the added weight is added to the bats. In the past, the added weight was added to the handle. I would think that the added weights were not added to the end loads, which are fairly standard. For instance, I have a Big Cat and I believe the end load is 1 oz. for all weights. Therefore, the extra weight would have to be added at another point on the bat. If that is the case, then the lightest weight would actually be the most endloaded.

But, this last weekend in Vegas I watched as the hitter in front of me used the ADIDAS. This hitter usually hits for high average and will have a couple dingers a weekend.
He hit nearly .800 and had 8 dingers in 6 games on primarily half swings.
If you are looking for new gear, you may wanna try this bat.

Guys we appreciate all the feedback, and just wanted to give a comment about the "first batch" questions. After talking with a lot of the Players - they were all bringing up the Reebok bats.

Reebok did mark there bats with a code like (1A or 2E) to identify the month & year that the bats were made. Back then the factory didnt have a dedicated work area for the bats to be made and were making bats 2 or 3 months of the year. Thats not the case with Adidas Melee bats. These bats have been made from Jan and have been made every month since then thru June for the Adidas Melee 2 bats. We will be getting 4 more shipments of the Melee 2 which the next shipment just came in this past Monday. These shipments will be coming in now thru Sept, so that we can meet the demand for this bat. Starting in July we are scheduled to make our 2017 Signature Series bat line with the 12" Endload bat to come out in the fall. So were continuing to make bats and testing bats for 2018 and beyond.

We've been listening to what the players have wanted, and hopefully that will answer the first batch questions you had about the Melee 2 bats.

Look forward to seeing you on the field!

At swing #420 on my adidas Melee 2 end load, I crushed a ball. Getting ready for next pitch, I heard a rattle. Sure enough, there's something loose inside the bat. I assume its a piece of carbon fiber wall. No visible signs of cracks or spidering on outside of bat at all. Bat still looks brand new. I'm hoping I get a lot more swings out this bat than 400. Now E6. Let's not get all sensitive. I wasn't discrediting your post and saying don't give the Adidas bat a look. I'm just saying don't use Las Vegas to judge it's performance. I doubt it will turn every hitter who usually hits for a high average and and hits a couple dingers a weekend into a guy who hits nearly .800 and has 8 dingers in 6 games on primarily half swings.

Guys & Ladies,

I just wanted to give you an update and answer a lot of questions that are being asked.

The bats are continually being made since end of February and hasnt stopped. There are no numbers that reference which "batch" its made in.

Question on what part of the market did Adidas Melee 2 target?
We targeted the Senior Market more of the 90% of the Senior Players. Now the Major+ 40 & 50 guys that cut the ball will get a lot of life out of the bats. But mainly Adidas wanted the Best performing bat on the market and with being the first bat company to make senior softball bats for the women & guys who want to swing faster by adding the 25ou bats to the line.

We appreciate all of the feedback and what you like and dont like about the bat. What some people dont like is how fast it swings or not as durable or getting 2000 swings on it. As we have said this is a performance bat and you have to get used to the swing. Some guys can pick it up and feel very natural to them, other guys need to get a couple of BP sessions and have 100-200 swings on it before they really get the swing down. There will be a 12" bat with a 25ou bat & a 30ou bat coming out in the fall, that will give more of the end weights that some of the players like.

Softball Senior Bat Reviews did a review on the Adidas Melee 2 and gave there feelings and comments on the Melee 2 Bats.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GxRSdh8hixk
A lot of the comments they said are very true in the design of the Melee 2. We did change the load of the bats to make it more progressive and give the 28 & 30 more end weight feel. The 25ou feels like swinging a tennis racket, but you really can put the ball anywhere you want to. The comment on the Taylor made technology might be a little off in the video. Personally I was able to swing the non - Taylormade shaft on the bat versus the Taylormade technology added bat which we have now in the Melee 2. That was a no brainer on the decision to what to make the bat. The Taylormade technology gave us the bat flex, speed off the bat & the bigger sweet spot that everyone wanted. It continued in the Reebok Melee tradition and evolved with all of the new technology thats been put into the Adidas Melee 2.

If you have any other questions please feel free to email me and Ill try to get back in touch with you asap.

Good Luck to all of the Teams & Players now that were really getting into the season. Hope to see you on the field soon!

just an update on the Melee. AS you know just about our team is looking forward in swinging the new Adidas bats we have the 25el to the 30EL Models. You got me started on the Dudley bats and they have been so good it was very hard to lay them down, but these new Melee GETS BETTER AND BETTER as we hit them. One of our 27EL has 850 swings as of today and a 27 balance bat has 2 swings short of 1000 swings. The end=load hit by a power hitter that can basehit and the balance player is a true basehitter with no power.

thanks for steering us to these bats

OK, I answered my last question for myself.

Previously, I tried a Melee 2 that was partially broken-in, tried one that was fully broken-in (which I loved!), and witnessed one that supposedly had only 20 hits on it launching bombs.

Turns out that the one that supposedly had 20 hits on it had a LOT more than that.

I took my own out of the wrapper today and hit 10 softballs pre-game. Only one of the hits went anywhere at all. In the game the bat was an absolute log. It is NOT hot out of the wrapper like the Rocket Launcher! Not even close.

This thing is going to require a lot of work to be game ready.

Kevin,

Sorry I didnt know that the Nightmare bats came in 25ou bats. Since the Nightmare was made more for the heavy end weight guys we didnt compare it to the melee 2. Were looking for a bat to help the Womens & 70+ guys with the 25ou Melee 2 balanced bats. We didnt find a 25ou bat made in the balance bats except for USSSA bats.

Doug - I will ask our testers what they feel the break in is. We did our testing with 40, 50 , 60 & 70 year old guys. Our oldest is Zeb Carter and a very good hitter in the 70 age group.

Well get back to you.

Mikens new Patriot comes in a 25 ounce version as well in both USSSA and in its senior SSUSA model. Get the one that feels the best to you and each of them delivers good results....

Regarding the break in period, I have been testing the Adidas Melee 2 in the mountains of Colorado at 8,750 feet in temperatures of 45-65 degrees. I have been testing a 26 balanced and a 26 end load.

At first, I found it a bit difficult to place the ball where I wanted it to go and I could not really get the swing down. As I hit more balls off the tee, both bats showed more liveliness and I began adjusting to the different feel of the swing.

I would suggest that you hit the bat model of choice at least 100-200 times before going at it in a game and you will see that the bat gets better with time.

Obviously the big guys can crush a ball with anything, but you base hitters and older players will appreciate the flex and the trampoline effect off this bat.

Thanks for the opportunity to share this updated info with you.

I believe the Dudley is a very good bat. I also believe that the Melee 2 may be better for distance once you break it in and get the swing feel down. The swing feel of these bats is different. Some players may not like what they feel in the beginning with the Melee 2 and frankly, that was the case with me. Friends told me to stay with it and to relax my swing which was hard for me to do at first but I stayed with it and am very glad I did.

Thanks,
Ed

Keeps checking out his guns in the mirror all the time now! LOL

Alan - Correct the Patriot bat has a 25ou bat, but at the time we launched this Melee 2 bat it was not out yet. Also my reference is to the 25ou Melee 2 Balanced Bat that I have not seen out for anybody to try. In closing on this - we tried to make a bat that could cover about 90% of the Senior Softball market. Having a 25ou Balance & Endload thru a progression of weights to a 30 Balance & Endload does that.

Swing for the Fence - I thought your comment was very funny! With saying everybodys bat is hotter than everyone else's and adding the distance together. Well have guys hitting them 600 ft very soon. LOL - Even Gorilla Boy Mike - would laugh at that!

In trying to answer the questions that everyone is asking about the Melee 2 bats. My only reference to another bat is to the original Reebok Melee. That bat is 6 years old and the composite technology then compared to now is not even close. The Melee 2 is stronger, bigger sweet spot, more distance & much more durable than the original Reebok Melee.

From our Adidas Pro Staff (heres what they swing):
Davey Reed - swings 27 & 28ou Endload (moved up 1 ou in Melee 2)
Bobby Davis - swings the 26ou Endload (moved down an ou.)
Ray Wimbrough - swings 25 & 26 Endload (switched to End from Balance)
Don Clatterbough - swings 30ou Endload (says perfect weight)
Dale Mayo - swings 30ou Endload (went up an ou.)
Steve Imlay - swings 30ou Endload (felt same way Don & Dale)

So you see our Pro Staff made changes to what best for there swing. Also most of them will have 2 different weights and some carry a balance bat in there bag for more bat control.

The last question on breaking in the bat? So many variables in that: 1. How strong the hitter is. 2. What ball is used. 3. Are the balls water logged. 4. Are u rotating the bat after each hit. 5. Are u hitting the balls to all fields. 6. Do u cut the ball or do u hit the ball square.

Doug 60 - 10 swings def is not enough swings to have the bat loose enough or "game ready". The range that Im finding out is 40 - 200 swings and the bat is game ready. We took a brand new Melee 2 balance bat out of the wrapper and did hit a lot of Hr's out of the Baseball field for our video that we shot.

Hopefully - that will help answer some questions that you guys have. Please feel free to email me anything specific, and hope to see you out on the field soon!

Another stuff what ball would you recomend for the break in period ???

Yes - Red is Balanced, Green is Endload. With the Balance Bats you get more control, and your hands will roll over quicker. The Endload is more for Power Hitters that want to drive the ball.

The Balls that I would recommend would be the ones you swing in your games. Some people believe hitting a stadium ball will help break the bat in faster. It will but it will also reduce the life of the bat. Im not a believer in doing that. I want a ball that will be similar to what will be used in games. That way you can get the feel on how much you have to cut the ball to get either backspin for power & topspin for base hitting.

Appreciate the questions!
