Achilles Tendon Soreness
I've been playing a lot of ball over the winter and I'm experiencing sore achilles tendons. I know there is no tear and my speed has not been hindered but the soreness is aggravating to me and I'd like to resolve this issue.

Ideas and thoughts are appreciated.

Ed,

Ice, ice, and more ice worked for me. I would also suggest trying CBD cream, or salve. It's a cannabidiol made from hemp. Since there's no THC in these products, they're legal. I'm also using a CBD alcohol rub. Do yourself a favor and do a Google search to gather information about the benefits of CBD products.

For me...
Lots of stretching, from toes to your butt.
Stretch the bottom of your foot, your Achilles, calf, hammy, butt and back to create as much slack in the load path as possible.

Kneed Achilles and calf with rolling pin or similar.
It will bring tears to your eye, but it helps.

Extended warmup like lite jogging about an hour before game time
...and 600 mg of ibuprofen

good luck,
Bill

Stretching before, ice after.
I use Aleve before games and practices.
Have used an ankle brace that goes over socks for compression and support.
And I know this word is not in most of our vocabularies but...
REST, REST, REST it when you get the opportunity.
Also try to keep it elevated when you can get off your feet.

You might also consider a courtesy runner occasionally if its allowed until you start to notice a decline in the discomfort. That's a tough one to do myself being an outfielder who is used to running in the outfield and usually being the courtesy runner.

Good luck with the Achilles!

ps- google Achilles and you are bound to find other suggestions

I have had achilles tendonitis at various times.

I also am a huge proponent of Kinesiology Tape. MAke sure you sue a directed and it is NOT just for while playing. You should leave it on and it helps in the healing process. http://www.kttape.com/

I also switched to more flexible trail running shoes from "cleats" and that provided help.

Many times it can help to replace the insoles of the shoes. As the insoles become worn down , there is not as much arch support and new insoles can help.

do you wear mid or high shoes...I found that the mids would irritate my Achilles usually by the middle of the summer leagues...I switched to lows and will see how they go this year...the Achilles would hurt to the touch...I mean REALLY painful.....I figure I had tendinitis but it last a long time and rest was the only thing that helped

First and foremost get evaluated by a good orthopedic doctor. Last February I had surgery to repair a totally separated left Achilles tendon I split apart while playing volleyball. I was back to playing softball in late May using a runner from the plate and back to running and playing hockey by early August. It was a major inconvenience that I wouldn't wish on anyone. I had no indications that this was going to happen it just did. Besides stretching and keeping range of motion in my ankle areas I now wear small heel wedges in my turf shoes. Good luck and be careful.

Thanks to all for your responses. I will try all the suggestions because I play outfield and I still do a significant amount of running. Have been wearing the Tanel mid range cleats. I have orthopedics back in Colorado but do not have them here in Florida.
Thanks to all,

Are you certain it is Achilles tendonitis and not plantar faciitis?

They are two different animals.
