| April 3, 2016 OZ40 549 posts | All tournaments are different and directors do what they can. Putting on a tournament is not an easy feat and it costs a lot. Participating should be more about the game and less about the rewards. When you stop and think about it, 20 dollars is probably more than the cost of a trophy or a t-shirt or pull-over that many tournaments hand out and it is at least or more useful. I go into a tournament looking forward to competing with and against my friends, having fun on and away from the fields and other things like building memories and hopefully being able to come away with nothing more than a little stiffness. Winning the tournament and any rewards received are just gravy. Do we need any more t-shirts or trophies? |

Let's do the math 30 teams 350 a team so around 10.000 bucks I am all about sportsmanship and building memories and all but come on man a twent dollar coupon to buy a bat off of your tourney guy really. |
| April 3, 2016 OZ40 549 posts | I don't run tournaments but I figure for starters: field rental, groundskeepers, umpires, scorers, balls, office staff/paperwork, time invested in organizing the tournament,putting the staff needed together, sanction fees all add up quick and I don't think anyone can put a price on the numerous headaches that pop up from various areas during a tournament. With the possible exception of charity tournaments, no one works for free or donates a facility to use. I doubt the guys throwing the tournaments are making a bunch of money. Like any other venture they take the risk and are entitled to make what the market will bear. That said, some tournaments advertise their awards up front in the advertising and maybe more of them should. I look at it like my tournament travel and expenses are the same as my vacation expenses because I do it willingly for fun and diversion. If there were 5 divisions in your 30 team tournament then 25 teams left with less than you. Maybe it comes down to what you prefer a 4 dollar t-shirt or a 20 dollar coupon. Just think how many of us seniors would be roaming the streets causing trouble if there were no one willing to run tournaments! |

| April 4, 2016 OZ40 549 posts | If you finished 4th you would've played fewer games, following that chain of logic to it's obvious conclusion, well...... back in the day I can remember losing the very first game of a tournament and beating teams all day Saturday fighting to the championship round on Sunday, winning the first game and losing the "if necessary" game BUT we played a ton more games than the winners played, just didn't get a t-shirt. |

| April 4, 2016 Sparky.1 Men's 75 284 posts | This one of the major reasons that I am very apprehensive toward my continued "sponsorship" of any more teams in today's game. The overall attitude of players (not all but enough) as well toward a Sponsor in today's game, leaves a lot to be desired as well. A lot of players look at a Sponsor strictly as a "cash cow". The team does well and as a Sponsor, I receive some type of "plastic" Plaque or some other type of "Simple Giveaway" trinket. You don't "sponsor" to get hardware but when you do and it is basically "junk", it become rather insulting especially since your club did so well. The old days when Sponsors were respected & cherished, a nice 1st place Trophy and more than likely, a 2nd place Trophy was "always" given out. Made our Sponsor(s) extremely happy and a diffident "perk" for their continued financial support! |
| April 4, 2016 Bob21 46 posts | We played in Shawnee this weekend and have no complaints. Great game time schedules, 9 teams in our bracket, and other than the wind, again, no complaints. I care less about discounts on bats or other items. It's about getting playing time (6 games) and competing. If you want a participation medal, play YMCA ball. |

It's not that big of a deal just voicing my opinion on this is the first tourney I have played in where they gave you nothing. The next time your team plays in a cash tourney tell them you don't want it when you win or if they are giving away trophy's or bats tell them to give it to the fourth place team cause your to good to except such small tokens. |

I would say a good jumping off point for upcoming tournaments would be if anyone's concerned about balancing potential awards against driving time and related expenses then make a call to the tournament director prior to registering. One call may save a lot of disappointment after the tournament if your team should be fortunate enough to win. Lesson learned. |

FIGURE $1000 TO $1500 FOR 3 DAYS FIELD RENT, UMPS AT $3500 - $4000, INSURANCE? $250 FOR POLICY THAT ALSO COVERS PARK, BALLS $750 @ 5 PER TEAM X $5, PRE PLANNING TIME AT 2 WEEKS @ $20 PER HOUR (NOT NEAR ENOUGH IMO) = $1600, ADVERTISING $?????, LODGING FOR DIRECTOR AND STAFF $????, TRAVEL EXPENSES FOR DIRECTOR AND STAFF $????. MY NUMBERS MAY BE WAAAAY OFF, BUT JUST AT THIS GLANCE, I WOULDN'T DO IT FOR DOUBLE THE PRICE. ENJOY THE GAME, BE THANKFUL YOU CAN STILL PLAY, AND APPRECIATE THE PEOPLE THAT MAKE IT POSSIBLE FOR A BUNCH OF OLD FARTS TO PLAY A KIDS GAME. WHINING BECOMES NO ONE. |

| April 4, 2016 Omar Khayyam 1357 posts | Sparky's comment brings up a question: what do sponsors expect when their team wins a major tournament? In recent years, I have been playing on the first sponsored team in my career. Sponsor buys shirts and caps, gets lodging discounts, helps a bit with some tournament fees, and stocks a snack wagon each day at a tournament. Nothing for travel or lodging, bats or balls, but I'm happy with what is offered. For some tournaments we won, there was a nice winner's trophy, and the sponsor was glad to display it back at the store. For other tournaments won, there was no trophy, just individual rewards from shirts to caps to bat bags. What does the sponsor expect? Is the sponsor insulted by cheap "trinket" rewards as Sparky calls them? Does the sponsor want an old school trophy of mahogany and metal with an engraved plate? Does the sponsor care beyond having his name out there on the shirts? I was never a sponsor, so I don't really know. What do some of you sponsors think? |
