April 11, 2016 nickname36 93 posts | Vegas 50's Fields Are you putting the 50's on the getto fields, shadow rock and hollywood out on the far north east side of vegas this year miles from anything, or are you gonna do something different for us this year, my fingers are crossed. |
April 11, 2016 nickname36 93 posts | Heck put the 60's out there they have to most teams as of right now(37). You said you put the 50's out there because they have the most teams in the past, this year there is only 27 so far... FAIR IS FAIR!!!!!! |
April 12, 2016 Gonedeep43 71 posts | I keep hearing the excuse that the 50AAA is put at Shadowrock, because of the amount of teams. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Shadowrock only has 4 fields. Lorenzi has 4 fields. Hollywood has two. If 50AAA has the most teams, then why aren't they at BLD and Lorenzi? That's 10 fields using 2 parks and they are close to one another. I think the real answer for 50AAA being at Shadowrock is its the easy way out without pissing off the 50M And 50M+. |
April 12, 2016 deep14 102 posts | Agreed Gonedeep43 |
April 12, 2016 softball4b Men's 70 1248 posts | It is my understanding that a division will not play at the same park it played at in the previous years' tournament. If you played at BLD in the Southwest Championships in 2015 you will most likely play at a different complex for the same tournament in 2016. |
April 12, 2016 Gonedeep43 71 posts | Let's see, Worlds 2014, 50AAA Shadowrock, Southwest Championship 2015, Shadowrock, Worlds 2015, Shadowrock. I see a trend here. |
April 12, 2016 Gonedeep43 71 posts | I just thought of something. I noticed that Cheyenne is on the list of fields. Standby for Cheyenne as the park the 50AAA will play on. If you've ever played there, that's the definition of Ghetto. Last time I played there, a gun battle broke out across the street. |
April 12, 2016 gott2play Men's 60 212 posts | Hey Gonedeep43, If your issue is with the 50M and 50M+ teams getting preferential treatment, I've got an idea sure to get you to the venues you desire...move up to Major, just kidding. Valid as your complaint is, assigned field assignments don't leave everyone happy. Good luck in Vegas, maybe see you there. Tony Baltazar So Cal 55's - Major Demolition 60 - Major Plus |
April 12, 2016 FOFO Men's 60 284 posts | Tony, I don't think you were kidding. |
April 12, 2016 Gonedeep43 71 posts | Actually I play both 50AAA and Major. That's not the point. The point is, the director for the last 3 tourneys in vegas, dumped 50AAA at either Shadowrock or Hollywood or Lorenzi. Be fair and mix it up a little. |
April 12, 2016 nickname36 93 posts | Its about time other teams and people are to seeing the problem 50AAA is facing year after year after year in vegas spring and winter. Shadow Rock and hollywood need to be retired for the list of fields used by senior softball. Thank you: * Gonedeep43 * gott2play * softball4b * deep14 * fofo Just checked 60's have 37 teams and 50's have 27 teams, Where are you Dave McDowell I'd love to here your excuse's... |
April 12, 2016 DaveDowell Men's 70 4312 posts | Hi nick ... You guys are hilarious! ... But just so you'll feel better, the 50-AAA won't play at Shadow Rock in the Southwest Championships this year ... You were at BLD in 2014, and Shadow Rock last year, so we'll see what makes sense for this time around! ... Still working on Session #1 right now, but will put the 132 Session #2 teams in the blender later in the week ... Sunset? ... Lorenzi? ... Arroyo Grande? ... Cheyenne? ... Anything's possible! |
April 12, 2016 nickname36 93 posts | OK sounds good, then where will be??? |
April 12, 2016 nickname36 93 posts | LOL you said we won't be at shadow rock but you never said any thing about being at hollywood.... |
April 12, 2016 Gonedeep43 71 posts | I put in one vote for Arroyo Grande for 50aaa. And will we be required to wear a bullet proof vest while playing at Cheyenne? |
April 13, 2016 nickname36 93 posts | Nothing wrong with Arroyo Grande, Its got my vote. Cheyenne no way played there in my early 30's when the light poles were inside the fences and in play, Lorenzi used to be the same way. LOL LOL The good old days playing in the Budweiser tournaments in vegas. Lorenzi isn't in nicest area of town either. |
April 13, 2016 PoollShark Men's 50 90 posts | I played 50AAA at Lorenzi last year and thought it was a good complex, I didn't find the neighborhood to be an issue at all. Granted, I didn't go for a stroll either but the park is pretty isolated for the most part. I also played at Doc Romeo and that wasn't bad either. When you have that many teams to accommodate you need a lot of fields. Those are the only 2 complexes I've played at in Vegas, we'll be back this year. |
April 13, 2016 Gonedeep43 71 posts | Lorenzi is a nice park. Doc Romeo is ok. |
April 14, 2016 curveball Men's 65 705 posts | deep43, could you elaborate on why Doc Romeo is OK in comparison to Lorenzi. Thank you. |
April 15, 2016 shortstopchic10 Women's 40 61 posts | Y'all can get stuck on the fields the women get... Last fall Dos Esquales...two fields in a residential area, grass infield I recall. Then there's usually Shadow Rock and Hollywood...got my boss busted there off a bad hop on the lip off the crazy high grass. Haven't played at BLD since 2010. But whose counting |
April 15, 2016 shortstopchic10 Women's 40 61 posts | Ooopps ...that would be nose busted |
April 17, 2016 Gonedeep43 71 posts | Wow!!! 50AAA is playing on BLD???? Guess it's true, if you whine enough good things happen? |
April 17, 2016 nickname36 93 posts | Where did you get the info from , where is it posted? |
April 17, 2016 SSUSA Staff 3485 posts | Gonedeep43 ... Nawwwww .. We pay no attention to whining! nickname36 ... In the second message from the top of the Message Board ... The one that starts with SSUSA Staff: TENTATIVE SESSION #2 field assignments... ... It's been there since early Friday ... |
April 17, 2016 nickname36 93 posts | thank you |
April 18, 2016 Axemansa 17 posts | Played first time in Vegas last October. Gotta say fields were not that great. Obviously it's a capacity issue with AAA having such a large number of teams. Why is it necessary to have 50 Majors and Majors + play the same weekend? |
April 18, 2016 FOFO Men's 60 284 posts | Staff. We (55 Major) drew the short straw this year and got stuck at Shadow Rock. We all know the place is hard to get to, has only two usable fields and just generally is a poor venue. Why wouldn't you try and get Desert Breeze or even Doc Romeo an leave Shadow Rock off the rotation entirely? I guess on a positive note biting the bullet now should mean we wont get stuck there in the Masters.................... |
April 18, 2016 SSUSA Staff 3485 posts | FOFO - Thanks for the comments ... Desert Breeze is not available to us due to another association having it booked and Doc Romeo doesn't "fit" for 24 teams without Midnight Madness type scheduling ... But get to Sunday and you will finish at BLD ... The 60-AAA will stay at Shadow on Sunday playing ONLY on Fields #3-4 ... Good luck! |
April 18, 2016 FOFO Men's 60 284 posts | Thanks for the quick response. I guess with BLD as a reward we will go ahead and play Sunday. |
April 18, 2016 MurrayW Men's 65 221 posts | Why does everyone consider BLD as a reward? The fields are way too short. 280-290 ft fences should not be used for national championship games when home runs are outs and hot balls are being used. |
April 18, 2016 Benji4 Men's 55 289 posts | Murray I agree. but the turf infield is nice in Vegas. Remember this BLD is a business. They had to cater to youngster league night heroes with shaved bats........... It's all about $$$... |
April 18, 2016 DOLFAN 90 posts | @Benji...LMAO at your comment "They had to cater to youngster league night heroes with shaved bats"..how efffing true...so funny watching those Mutts play during the week at any of the BLD..they think they are Hank Aaron.... as for BLD in Vegas, pretty much anyone can hit a HR there...its when they have to play at a different field and its "Oh O..thats not going to Go" They walk back to the dugout and say they just missed it..LMAO...ah, the life of a fake wanna be HR hitter... |
April 18, 2016 Benji4 Men's 55 289 posts | Let me clarify: I agree the fences at BLD are to short. The rest of BLD is nice to include the turf. Plus the Micheladas are damn good. |
April 18, 2016 FOFO Men's 60 284 posts | Best things about BLD are the Turf Batters boxes and outfields and also the facility itself. Indoor seating, cold beer etc. |
April 18, 2016 FOFO Men's 60 284 posts | I meant turf Infields. Also BLD is a heck of a lot better than Shadow Rock.............................. |
April 18, 2016 Dbax Men's 65 2100 posts | $5 per day entry fee!? You got to be kidding me. If your spouse comes that's $30 for the weekend. With what their charging for entry fees, SSUSA should pick up the tab. ;) |
April 18, 2016 nickname36 93 posts | I agree 5$ per day is to much for such a big tourney with an entry fee of 595$. The cost should be 2$ maybe 3$ or just leave it at 5$ for the whole weekend. Learn how to sneak in its easy, there is only youngsters working the gate they don't care.... ANYTHING IS BETTER THEN PLAYING AT SHADOW ROCK AND HOLLYWOOD!!!!!! FOFO: quit bitching, in all the vegas senior tournaments I've played in(15) I've play at shadow rock and hollywood about 75% of the time, Ive never played at BLD. I thought I was in paradise at arroyo grande one time. You get stuck there once, big freaking deal, suck it up and enjoy the view especially at night, thats about all there is up there... LOL LOL About the only place to go up there is TIMBERS BAR & GRILL, East Lake Mead Blvd & Mt Hood Street.... |
April 18, 2016 Hookdup 27 posts | I personally like Arroyo Grande the best. Nice fields in a nice area. BLD seems to be in a not so nice area. |
April 18, 2016 FOFO Men's 60 284 posts | Nickname, I believe there was no bitching in any of my posts. I have been fortunate to play at Shadow Rock in Kids tournaments as well as many SSUSA events as I am a Las Vegas resident. I only asked why a couple other venues were not being used and Staff answered my question. Hey Dave, that's not a bad idea. |
April 18, 2016 DaveDowell Men's 70 4312 posts | Dbax and nick • If $15 dollars for three days of softball at BLD is a budget killer, maybe the trip to Las Vegas isn't for you? [grins] |
April 18, 2016 Dbax Men's 65 2100 posts | That's $30. |
April 18, 2016 1bounce Men's 55 35 posts | That's 10 bets on the craps table |
April 18, 2016 Dbax Men's 65 2100 posts | Wow, great point! |
April 18, 2016 #19 Men's 70 302 posts | Poor answer, Dave ... The fact is that many of us pay a lot of money for the privilege of playing in one of your tournaments ... Not all of us play on a sponsored team ... Airline tickets, hotel, car, food, entry fee all add up, usually $1000 and more ... Then to have to pay to get into the park where the games are being played? ... Plucks a nerve, Dave, just like your thoughtless post. |
April 18, 2016 The Screamer5 Men's 60 69 posts | I don't how the SSUSA Staff can make everyone happy when it comes to assigning fields for such large tournaments. Everyone can't play on the most desired sites. I've been to Vegas the past three years (50AAA) and have played on several of the fields. To be honest, I don't even remember which sites we played at. I guess it just doesn't matter that much to me. Maybe it should, but it doesn't. I just want to play ball. I can only imagine the logistical nightmare it must be for the Staff to schedule the Vegas tournaments. What did we have last year...was it 68 teams...? And that's just 50AAA. Got to be a difficult task at best. |
April 18, 2016 Dbax Men's 65 2100 posts | I realize Dave is just bust'n my ba$@s. |
April 18, 2016 nickname36 93 posts | 5$(actually 4$ with the token) is small price to play just as long as I don't have to play at shadow rock and hollywood....I'd take arroyo grande any time, sunset station is 5 mins away, everything is 45 to 60 mins away at shadow rock and hollywood weird....Just think the winter session costs 745$ plus 5$ a day at BLD.... FOFO: you weren't bitching just whining alittle... |
April 19, 2016 curveball Men's 65 705 posts | The last tournament we played in at BLD in Palm Springs (actually Cathedral City) didn't charge the players an entry fee, they were paid for by the tournament director. Spectators were charged $3 per day. That seemed fair. |
April 19, 2016 FOFO Men's 60 284 posts | I would gladly pay $10.00/Day to play at BLD versus free at Shadow Rock. Sometimes you pay a little extra for quality. Just Saying............ Thanks Nick I'll try and whine a little less. Bottom line is I will play about anywhere. Just want to get on the field and compete and someday beat Dbax and the Bandits. |
April 19, 2016 DaveDowell Men's 70 4312 posts | FOFO ... Several years ago, we had a player walk up to the desk on the way out of BLD and say the same $10 thing, with a twist ... He apologized and asked me not to say anything to his wife about it because they were "those two" who thoroughly embarrassed themselves via rant at the gate on the way in! ... There's a lot of that here ... The complaint department is wide open, but nobody actually has the strength of conviction on the issue to ask me to NOT schedule them at BLD! .. All over $4 (net) a day ... Go figger! ... Good luck this week, and get to Sunday when the 55-Major finishes at BLD ... |
April 19, 2016 Enviro-Vac Men's 65 489 posts | We will pay more than FOFO to play all our games there :~) |
April 19, 2016 SJV Men's 60 21 posts | You can please some of the people some of the times, but you can't please all of the people all of the time. Just saying. |
April 19, 2016 Omar Khayyam 1357 posts | curveball, our team played at that BLD in Cathedral City two years ago and we, also, were not charged as players since it was explained that our tournament entry fee covered the charge. To our surprise, our wives and other guests were not charged either! Happened on two different days with two different gatekeepers, so I guess it was the policy for tournament players. One thing that should be mentioned to those lusting for BLD fields is that they allow no outside food or beverage (other than water) and will inspect your bag for same. This is the policy at the three BLD complexes I have played at. The frustration is that sometimes these fields are not that great. As an older team, we appreciate the covered dugouts, the cool central dining areas, and the true-bounce infields, not to mention the "thrill" of playing on a major league layout. But we have encountered poorly maintained outfields (mud holes), ripped up and poorly patched infields in front of the bases, and scoreboards that might or might not be working, but certainly were not always on. Also, as a tournament team that usually travels to tournaments with a roster of 16 or 17, when you add in the wives, etc. for three days, the BLD surcharge is $250!! (with a sometimes-desired discount of $50 in food/beverage credit). That's a pretty hefty surcharge on top of a large team tournament fee! That said, Dave, we will take BLD anytime we are in Vegas. Don't move us and blame me! |
April 19, 2016 Omar Khayyam 1357 posts | Sorry. Adding in the surcharge for wives and guests, the cost is about $500 more! Less a potential $100 in food savings. That is REALLY a big extra cost for a team to play on those fields. |
April 22, 2016 Webbie25 Men's 70 2414 posts | Well, here we are getting ready for Friday in Vegas and the weather report is for winds of 30 gusting to 40 or 50. And we get shadow rock where they will probably hit 120 or so. LOL. Dave, your timing for this tournament was amazing! But we understand 40 TO 50 MPH is no big deal---IF YOU ARE A HURRICANE. |
April 22, 2016 Webbie25 Men's 70 2414 posts | I figured you would give me a hard time about that post. Hope I get a chance to say hi out here sometime this weekend. |
April 22, 2016 DaveDowell Men's 70 4312 posts | I thought you'd like that, and I couldn't resist! ... We're not in Las Vegas this time around ... Had to cancel out due to a grandparent conflict ... But it was worth it, when we greeted the arrival of Grandchild #6 (and Grand-daughter #4) Tuesday night in Berkeley ... Baby Noa and Mom are doing great ... We're spending the weekend in the Bay Area to make sure we appropriately spoil her right from the start! ... Have fun and good luck! |
April 22, 2016 Dbax Men's 65 2100 posts | Congratulations Grandpa! Oh, and what a nasty windy day at Shadow Rock. It was ridiculous. |
April 23, 2016 Webbie25 Men's 70 2414 posts | Congratulations to you and Fran! Family is still more important! Dave wasn't kidding-we alternated in right field on the bottom field and could hardly stand up at times. The wind by the plate was partially blocked and swirled, making it tough for even seasoned pitchers to throw strikes. I think we 'out walked' our 2 opponents.I know one of our guys never swung the bat until his SEVENTH at bat and another until his SIXTH at bat. |
April 24, 2016 Webbie25 Men's 70 2414 posts | Well, Shadow Rock again proved that it should not be used. The upper two fields are dangerously uneven-we even nicknamed the big hump behind second base 'the grassy knoll' on field 2. The grass, what there was of it, was deep enough to hide a softball in places. But then, when things went late, the lights would not come on in the 6th inning of a very competitive and entertaining game, and we had to stop for an hour until they got them on. Sorry, Dave-not a slam at you because I understand Las Vegas limits you tremendously. But some of the hops on those fields could have injured people. I am more disappointed that Las Vegas doesn't treat SSUSA better. |
April 26, 2016 Mango Men's 50 159 posts | Hey Dave, Missed you this weekend in Vegas. We played at Lorenzi and the fields were fine. Don did a great job as TD. Umpires were pretty decent as usual. A couple that stood out, Sam and Bobby were very good. As far as BLD goes- its not a lack of "strength of conviction" that keeps me from asking not to be scheduled at BLD, but the fear that as soon as I request not to play there, we will be scheduled there :-)). And its not because of the cost of entry but because of the ridiculously short fences for 50 Major Plus coupled with difficulty of ball retrieval. Again, a well run tournament over at Lorenzi with nice fields and good umpires. You and Fran who were understandably absent, were missed. Congratulations on your new granddaughter. See you in Reno. Mango |
April 26, 2016 neck10 714 posts | dave just put the 15 dollars in the entry fee is paid before they get there end of whinning!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
April 26, 2016 DaveDowell Men's 70 4312 posts | neck10 ... Or you could take the same $15 and buy a good lock and a chain to keep that gate closed on Field #3 at Midwest ... Just sayin' ... |
April 26, 2016 VOODOOSPORTS Men's 40 34 posts | Mango, good umps at Lorenzi? Guess we just got unlucky. Tourney was ran great, fields at are park were just fine but the umps we had were terrible. On at least seven occasions(that I remember) the umps had to be corrected on play calls (rules) how many outs, CR rules, time out rules, Hr numbers and I had to literally give an ump a hug because he was so worked up he was shaking. The kicker was all of these times it wasn't the usual, that's why we lost scenarios they were in the early parts of games. Hell twice we were given 5 runs, one time in the first inning and I had to tell the ump im the 4th batter that was only a 4 run bomb. Umps didn't signal time but called plays dead, had a do over on a pitch because "he wasn't paying attention" according to the blue. He was talking to an outfielder not looking at the game. Overall great tourney but the 40s deserve better umps for the price we pay for entry fees. |
