April 14, 2016 B.J. 1105 posts | missing first bse STAFF: I asked this question about your post on 4/10 and I guess you missed it so I will try again....STAFF on my last post I said to do a VERBAL appeal while being on the bag OR tag the runner before he returns to the bag .... You quoted stick8's mechanic...If the first baseman does a live ball appeal before the batter runner gets back to first then i call him out....Per your post on how an appeal can be made how would the fieder communicate to the umpire non-verbaly, implicit, or by assumed—so long as the intent of the fielder is clear to the umpire ..." ...where is it in the rule book or SENIOR SOFTBALL mechanics that an appeal may be non-verbal, implicit, or assumed...so if in your description if a fielder knows the runner misses the bag all he has to do is touch the bag and ASSUME the umpire knows what he is doing? please give some examples... and rule number please...thx |
April 14, 2016 SSUSA Staff 3485 posts | Here are a few quick examples of a valid LBA being made non-verbally ... [1] Throwing behind a runner who left first too early on a caught fly ball ... The LBA is implied because there is NO other reason to throw to first once the batter has been retired ... [2] 1B turning and tagging the runner after he has missed the bag and before getting back to the bag ... Again, implied because there is NO reason for that tag unless the 1B (and hopefully the eagle-eye umpire) know he missed it ... [3] Similar to previous one, with 1B silently showing the ball to the umpire and re-stepping on the bag before batter-runner gets back to first ... Those all illustrate a valid non-verbal LBA ... I don't have time to play the specific rule cite game ... There is a wealth of information available about an LBA on-line ... Take a look ... We don't have an official umpire's mechanics manual, but we don't need one with guys like stick8 and Garocket and a few others hanging out here! .. No need to "over-think" this stuff, it should be common knowledge for competent umpires! ... |
April 14, 2016 B.J. 1105 posts | STAFF great answers especially the 2nd one which is the only one that actually describes the "original scenario" ...and also was my answer to Webbie25 when he asked a "specific question" .. would a runner be out IF THE FIELDER JUST CAUGHT THE BALL AND IS STANDING ON THE BAG after the runner had passed the base...again in that case there should be a verbal appeal while the fielder is on the bag....or as I also said a tag of the runner before he returned to the bag... I wasn't over thinking I was answering the question AS IT WAS ASKED and your 3rd answer that is really stretching the limits ...or as you always like to say...over-thinking |
April 22, 2016 Webbie25 Men's 70 2414 posts | I have played first base a lot. There are times, especially when stretching for a throw and barely holding the base that I could not possibly tell that the runner missed the base. I wouldn't know to appeal that. |
